In the year 2024, Helldivers 2 caused a splash upon its release on PlayStation and PC systems. At its peak, it attracted more than 450,000 gamers on Steam alone, and it has consistently retained an active player community on both platforms since then.
Initially, during a period of intense excitement, there was a significant outcry on Twitter (which is now known as X). This outcry encouraged Xbox gamers to unite against the Terminids and protect Super Earth. However, these optimistic expectations appeared to be fleeting.
Until very recently, it wasn’t known that Helldivers 2 would be released on Xbox consoles, but Sony just unexpectedly announced that the official release date is August 20, 2025.
Liberate planets, call in airstrikes, and fight for Super Earth
In the present moment, Hell Divers 2 stands as Sony’s premier live-action game, offering a captivating, team-oriented PvE (Player vs. AI Enemies) adventure to its players.
In simpler terms, you and your team find yourselves transported into a dangerous environment filled with hostile extraterrestrial beings. These aliens are aggressively expanding their control, often capturing entire planets. Your mission is to eliminate these waves of alien invaders.
As part of our united front, it’s crucial that we collaborate effectively. This includes coordinating aerial reinforcements, such as dropships, ground vehicles, and even strategic orbital bombardments. Our missions are characterized by their intensity and disorder, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and tactical application of support resources.
The core of this experience revolves around the Galactic War, an ongoing, dynamic conflict driven by the community. This continuous struggle serves as a frontline that changes and progresses with time. It’s a joint effort where each mission accomplished has a ripple effect, helping to free planets scattered across the galaxy from either the Terminids or Automatons.
In simpler terms, each planet is located within a larger region on a dynamically changing galaxy chart. Players decide where they want to engage in combat, arrive like ODST soldiers, and either depart triumphantly after winning or meet a heroic end if they lose.
According to me, the game stands out as one of the rare examples that successfully executes the live-service concept. It offers substantial advancement, a feeling of grandeur, and significant player influence without excessively relying on in-app purchases or artificial challenges to progress.
Helldivers 2 CEO says “Send your thanks” to PlayStation
It seems that Sony took the initiative for Helldivers 2 to be released on Xbox, contrary to what might have been expected. In a conversation on Discord, Arrowhead’s CEO, Shams Jorjani, explained the situation, stating, “It was actually all PlayStation. Send them your thanks! We were fully supportive.

It was all PlayStation. Send them your thanks! We were all in support of course.

Jorjani continued to express his admiration for the decision, saying, “I consider it one of the most impressive actions they’ve taken. They’re really excelling at what they do.” This was his response when asked if he anticipated Sony would take such a step.

I think it’s one of the coolest things they’ve done. They’re killing it

The move with MLB: The Show on Xbox was indeed a change, but it was initiated by Major League Baseball, not Sony. In contrast, Helldivers 2 marks the first instance where Sony took the initiative to release one of their own games on Xbox.
As a devoted fan, I’ve witnessed an incredible transformation – from barely recognizing Xbox hardware in the gaming landscape to now proudly publishing my platform’s most thriving live-service title on Microsoft’s turf! It’s evident that the barriers of exclusivity are gradually breaking down. Even Xbox is warmly embracing this change, as seen with the simultaneous launch of Gears of War: Reloaded on both Xbox and PlayStation platforms, a remarkable feat that once seemed unfathomable just a few years ago.
Xbox players, prepare to drop
Helldivers 2 is slated for release on August 20, 2025, which also marks the day Gears of War: Reloaded becomes available on both Xbox and PlayStation. I can hardly wait to alternate between battling swarms of Locust and Terminids!
For beginners joining for the first time, take note: Friendly fire is constantly activated, so be mindful when shooting and avoid accidentally destroying your teammates. Additionally, the game allows cross-platform play, enabling you to engage in combat alongside players from both PlayStation and PC platforms.
Are you ready to jump feet first into Galactic War and fight for Super Earth? I know I am.
