Known for providing high-quality graphics cards and motherboards that cater to PC gamers, MSI has consistently delivered excellent value products for years. In numerous occasions, I’ve incorporated their hardware in my personal desktop builds as well as those I’ve constructed for friends. However, it turns out that the brand has expanded its reach beyond what I initially thought.
It turns out that this brand is well-known for its cost-effective gaming laptops, which are often highly sought after during sales events like Amazon Prime Day and Black Friday. These laptops provide a budget-friendly entry point for those who might not otherwise be able to afford one. However, I hadn’t paid much attention to their mini PC offerings until they unveiled some interesting new MSI “Cubi” models at CES 2025.
MSI extended an invitation for me to visit their London office, where they shared information about their latest AI-focused mini PCs, both operational and running on Windows 11. They provided a demonstration unit for hands-on exploration, along with some background on why MSI is extending its Cubi line with the MSI Cubi NUC A1 1UM and AI+ 2MG models.
In 2013, Intel launched the concept of a compact mini PC called NUC (Next Unit of Computing), powered by their energy-efficient “Sandy Bridge” mobile processors. Since then, they’ve refined the design until ASUS obtained a non-exclusive license for Intel’s NUC blueprints. Now, you can find various mini PC models tailored to specific requirements and even utilizing processors other than Intel chips.
Many brands have adapted to new naming conventions, yet MSI maintains a traditional approach, using the NUC series and incorporating Intel’s “Lunar Lake” Core Ultra mobile processors in their Copilot+ PC project, the Cubi NUC AI+ 2MG, and “Meteor Lake” equivalents in the Cubi NUC AI 1UMG. However, both models can be customized for component adjustments.
At first sight, the idea is reminiscent yet innovative: a compact, cubic device boasting Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports and running Windows 11. Much like productivity-focused laptops or desktop computers, it promises the same level of adaptability. However, MSI aims to differentiate these mini PCs through several distinctive features.

Initially, let’s discuss the eco-friendly aspect as both Cubi NUC models are constructed using recycled materials (Post-Consumer Recycled or PCR). Moreover, MSI UK marketing head Gökhan Bodur shared that they plan to make their packaging entirely plastic-free in the future, eliminating plastic bags and ties. This action seems logical for businesses, but I’m always pleased to witness responsible manufacturing practices.
Measuring just 0.826 liters, the Cubi NUC AI+ 2M sets a new standard for mini PCs.

Afterward, the compact Cubi NUC AI 1UMG (0.51 liters) and Cubi NUC AI+ 2MG (0.826 liters) feature an adorable, removable power button, making it easier to attach these mini PCs to the rear of a monitor using the included VESA mount. It’s worth noting that the Cubi NUC already provides a power-link option via HDMI for waking the mini PC when used with a compatible MSI monitor. Additionally, both models come equipped with dual 2.5G Ethernet ports, which may provide a “Wake on LAN” functionality, similar to other NUCs.

Despite the challenge, connecting the power button to the side slot on the Cubi NUC is fairly simple and, if I were setting one up for small businesses or educational institutions like those MSI aims at, this would be my preferred method. The button has a sticky backing, allowing it to be concealed yet easily accessible – a feature I believe should be incorporated in more mini consumer PCs.
Ultimately, on the Cubi NUC A1 1UMG model, you are able to link up to four external displays using both the dual HDMI and Thunderbolt 4 ports. Although this is quite an achievement for a compact computer system, there are valid explanations behind it.
While you can certainly create a standard workstation with screens for specific apps or metrics, the Cubi NUCs are designed to go beyond that. They’re not just computers; they’re also suitable for digital signage applications. For instance, in a restaurant setting, you could show four different menus on separate screens, or even run an integrated ordering system across multiple screens. It’s a compact PC that offers great flexibility, but it’s important to note that its primary focus is on enterprise markets rather than everyday consumers.

Another option to consider is purchasing a Cubi NUC from MSI, especially if you’re looking for a mini PC resembling the Beelink SER9 and falling under a category that’s already quite slim. It may not be the most affordable choice, but a model of the Cubi NUC AI+ 2MG priced at $949.99 comes with the same Intel Core Ultra 7 258V chip as MSI’s Claw 8 AI+ handheld, which is a top performer in its class.
If you’re considering downsizing your regular desktop computer, the previous generation Cubi NUC A1 1UMG might be a suitable option for you. You can find it at Best Buy for $749.99, complete with 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD, powered by an Intel Core Ultra 5 125H processor. However, it’s worth noting that this model can be upgraded to the same Intel Core Ultra 7 155H processor found in Lenovo’s Slim 7i 14 (Gen 9), one of my personal favorite laptops. Despite its generous memory and storage, it’s important to note that it lags behind its more capable sibling, the Cubi NUC AI+ 2MG, but each model caters to a specific market segment.

If the Copilot+ PC-certified Cubi NUC AI+ 2MG ever goes on sale, it would be hard not to suggest it due to MSI’s thorough testing process, which guarantees longevity for this mini PC. It’s comforting to see a brand I’m not well-acquainted with like MSI venturing into this market.
For an average user choosing the AI+ 2MG model, they would enjoy features such as a pre-installed microphone, speakers, a fingerprint scanner accessible through the device’s power button, and a dedicated Copilot button, should they desire these additions.
Regardless of the specific choice, it’s great to observe an increase in Copilot+ PC options beyond just laptops. As my readers may recall, I’m quite enthusiastic about mini PCs. I firmly believe that they are a superior alternative compared to keeping a laptop perpetually connected to a docking station.
It’s delightful when products showcased at CES 2025 actually reach full production, instead of fading away. Among the new mini PCs, the one that stands out is the Cubi NUC AI+ 2MG. I sincerely hope it does well enough to inspire further generations from MSI.
This version maintains a natural flow and clear emphasis on the main point – the Cubi NUC AI+ 2MG.
