The transition at Warner Bros. which led to the DCEU being rebooted under James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios resulted in some projects being put on hold. In 2022, Gunn and Safran took on the roles of co-chairmen for DC Studios, wrapping up the remaining DC projects such as “The Flash” and “Blue Beetle”, while simultaneously ushering in a new phase that was recently unveiled with “Superman”.
The pair unveiled their blueprint for the DC Universe, commencing with Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. This fresh approach by DC Studios led to the scrapping of multiple upcoming DC films, including many sequels based on popular DCEU franchises. Although many of these cancellations were essential for DC Studios to initiate a revamped DC Universe, Gunn and Safran ultimately made the decision to move forward with this change.
DC Movies That Have Been Cancelled by James Gunn at DC Studios
Batman Beyond
After it was confirmed that Michael Keaton would reprise his role as Bruce Wayne in “The Flash,” there were whispers that Warner Bros. had bigger plans for the actor known for portraying Batman. One of these potential plans involved a possible movie adaptation of “Batman Beyond,” a beloved comic book series.
It wasn’t until the podcast “The Hot Mic” that Jeff Sneider revealed Christina Hodson, the writer of “Birds of Prey”, would have been involved with the script for a movie that hadn’t yet been officially announced. However, it was reported that the “Batman Beyond” project was scrapped in December 2022, just months after Gunn and Safran began their tenure at DC Studios.
It’s important to mention that whispers of a standalone Batman Beyond animated movie are circulating, distinct from the Keaton project. While this project hasn’t been officially scrapped, it seems development has slowed down significantly, as there’s been minimal news about it recently.
Black Adam 2
The movie titled Black Adam, which was anticipated as a game-changer in the DCEU, unfortunately faced controversy. Implications within the film and a post-credit scene indicated a potential sequel featuring a rematch against Superman.
Nonetheless, in 2023, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson publicly stated that the leadership shifts at DC were responsible for the non-production of _Black Adam 2_, thus assigning the blame for its cancellation to Gunn and Safran.
Wonder Woman 3
Originally, plans were underway for a third Wonder Woman movie after the 2017 and 2020 films, with Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot involved. But due to changes at DC Studios and the cancellation of upcoming projects, Wonder Woman, portrayed by Gadot, was left behind in the past.
It’s currently being reported that DC Studios is developing a fresh Wonder Woman movie, which will feature a new actor stepping into the role of Diana Prince within the DC Universe.
Gotham City Sirens
Despite some fans anticipating a follow-up to “Birds of Prey” featuring Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn to turn into a “Gotham City Sirens” film project, Robbie (who also served as producer) clarified that no sequel was currently being developed, disregarding rumors suggesting otherwise.
Gunn effectively put an end to the possibility of a Gotham City Sirens project when he assumed control over DC Studios, as he clarified on Reddit four years ago that while he and Robbie had talked about collaborating again following their work on The Suicide Squad, they never discussed or considered the idea of Gotham City Sirens.
Sasha Calle’s Supergirl
After her appearance in “The Flash,” Sasha Calle was anticipated to headline a standalone Superman’s cousin film, Supergirl. However, when Gunn and Safran revealed a new “Supergirl” movie as part of their Chapter 1 lineup, it essentially shelved Calle’s solo superhero project.
Rather than the upcoming “Supergirl” film, Milly Alcock will take on the role as Kara Danvers, picking up where she left off after a short cameo in the “Superman” movie.
