The failure to meet revenue goals for Destiny 2: The Final Shape, its underwhelming performance, and Marathon’s numerous issues have raised speculations about Sony taking a more active role in managing Bungie. However, according to the chief financial officer Lin Tao, Bungie is in the process of integrating with PlayStation Studios, implying a closer partnership between the two entities.
Initially, when Bungie was bought out, it was known for maintaining full independence. However, recent changes under the title “structural reform” have altered this status. During a recent Q&A session, Tao clarified through an interpreter (as transcribed by VGC), “Regarding Bungie’s management structure at the time of acquisition, we had established a highly independent atmosphere; this was one perspective. But now…
After implementing structural reforms, as we mentioned last year, Bungie is moving towards a closer alignment with PlayStation Studios. This transition means that Bungie’s independence is gradually decreasing, and the integration process is ongoing. In essence, Bungie is heading towards becoming a part of PlayStation Studios in the long term if you view this as an evolving journey.
Over the past few years, Bungie has faced significant challenges, such as multiple rounds of layoffs and abandoned projects. A report suggested that these issues might be linked to the company’s overestimation of its financial outlook. The process of deeper collaboration with Sony started last year, which resulted in various roles being moved to PlayStation following the layoffs. As a consequence, Sony launched a new studio called teamLFG to develop a new science fiction and fantasy IP.
It’s still uncertain when it will join PlayStation Studios, so keep an eye out for updates. For now, Bungie is busy working on the game titled Marathon, initially scheduled for release in September but delayed. A new launch date should be revealed this Fall, and Sony anticipates that the extraction shooter will be available by March 31st, 2026.
