Although there are still a couple of months left in the current year, 2025 has been an exceptional year for horror movies so far. In recent months, films such as Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners”, Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein’s “Final Destination Bloodlines”, and Danny Boyle’s “28 Years Later” have attracted large audiences and set new box office records. Some of this year’s top horror titles are finally making their way to streaming platforms. One of the early standout horror films from Neon, which was released on February 21, 2025, is now available for streaming on Hulu as part of its August 2025 arrivals.
The movie under discussion is titled “The Monkey“, a film directed by Osgood Perkins, based on Stephen King’s 1980 novel of the same name. This chilling story revolves around a peculiar wind-up monkey toy that triggers a chain of bizarre and terrifying deaths. Released in cinemas back in February, it swiftly became one of the standout horror films of 2025, garnering an impressive 78% critics’ approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, placing it among the highest-rated horror movies this year. Six months post its theatrical premiere, “The Monkey” started streaming on Hulu on August 7th.
In this rephrased version, the movie features Theo James portraying twin siblings Hal and Bill Shelburn. When these brothers stumble upon a peculiar wind-up monkey toy, it triggers a string of bizarre deaths that ultimately fracture their family. Fast forward 25 years, the haunted toy resumes its lethal spree, compelling the long-estranged brothers to face off against the cursed plaything as depicted in the film’s synopsis.
Additionally featuring Tatiana Maslany, Christian Convery, Colin O’Brien, Rohan Campbell, Sarah Levy, Adam Scott, and Elijah Wood in its cast.
In a fashion reminiscent of the “Final Destination” series, the movie “The Monkey” is known for some of the most chilling and unforgettable deaths in horror cinema. The film earned a global box office revenue of $68.9 million and has been recognized as one of the top horror films of the year. Patrick Cavanaugh from ComicBook rated it 4 out of 5, praising it as a “horror movie that brings one of the rowdier offerings of the year, effectively capturing both the emotional depth and playful humor that fans of Stephen King have come to appreciate.
The buzz suggests that The Monkey, a potential follow-up to Perkins’ 2024 horror comedy Longlegs, might be the next big cult horror film. Definitely worth watching and it can be streamed on Hulu.
