It’s been nearly five years since new entries or content for the beloved “Made in Abyss” franchise have appeared, but it looks like this dry spell is coming to an end soon and fans will be in for a treat for quite some time. The series has consistently maintained its popularity and dedicated fanbase, and with season 2 completed, there’s now plenty of source material to adapt into new content. From both a production perspective and considering the slow pace at which the manga is being released, the upcoming movie series is an ideal choice.
According to the official account of the anime series “Made in Abyss,” which was previously known as Twitter, the franchise will be continuing with a series of movies. The first film, titled “Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery,” is set to debut in Japanese cinemas in 2026. However, the number of films in the series and whether they will cover Season 2 content, similar to the three-part compilation release of Season 1, has not yet been confirmed. The title and key visual suggest that the new characters Tepaste and Cravagli will be introduced, and it’s likely that the movies will begin adapting the Curse Fleet Arc or the 7th Layer arc, a popular storyline among fans. Despite concerns about adapting an arc that the manga is still releasing chapters for, making it into a movie series seems to be an effective choice given the circumstances.
Made In Abyss Is Finally Returning To Theatres After 4 Years
The Abyss stands as the unexplored region within this realm, serving as the central setting for the anime “Made in Abyss.” This place is shrouded in mystery and resembles a deep, enigmatic chasm. It teems with peculiar creatures and antiquated artifacts known as Artefacts, which contemporary humans cannot duplicate. This allure draws adventurers known as Delvers. Riko, an orphan girl dwelling near the Abyss in Orth, dreams of emulating her mother’s profession and joining the ranks of Delvers. In the beginning of one expedition, she stumbles upon a strange robot child. Hand-in-hand, they venture deeper into the Abyss, uncovering its mysteries and facing the shadows lurking beneath.
I’m thrilled to share some fantastic news for fans like myself! The talented team that brought us the first two seasons and the movie is coming back for future projects – and that’s truly a cause for celebration!
The mastermind behind it all, Masayuki Kojima (Monster, My Happy Marriage), will be directing the upcoming movies at studio Kinema Citrus. We also have Hideyuki Kurata (Rurouni Kenshin, Goblin Slayer) returning to handle the series composition.
To top it off, the talented duo of Yuka Kuroda and Kazuchika Kise will be designing our beloved characters. As more details about roles such as music and art direction are released, I’m sure we’ll all be just as excited!
Season 2 concluded at chapter 60, and since then, only ten chapters have been published, each containing over 60 pages. The mangaka is planning to release a full-length film annually, or possibly every two years, giving them more time to create additional chapters without the rush of the adaptation overtaking them. Despite the prequel movie encompassing content from two volumes totaling twelve chapters, it’s exciting to see how much of the anticipated arc this upcoming film will include.
