Dave Bautista is on the verge of taking on his next acting gig. According to Deadline, negotiations are underway for Bautista to star as the antagonist in Amazon MGM Studios’ upcoming revamp of Highlander. The movie, which will see Henry Cavill in one of the lead roles, has also recently brought on Oscar-winner Russell Crowe. Remarkably, this is a return to his 2015 considerations for the same role when the project was being developed at Summit Entertainment, as Bautista’s character, The Kurgen, was initially intended for him back then. Clancy Brown originally played The Kurgen in the original Highlander film.
In 2008, Summit Entertainment acquired the rights for the Highlander franchise, planning to reboot it with director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan and screenwriters Art Marcum and Matt Holloway. However, this project didn’t move forward. In 2021, Henry Cavill joined the project, and despite some delays, he confirmed that the film is his top priority for now, with production set to start soon. Cavill will portray MacLeod, while Russell Crowe will take on the role of Ramirez.
The Highlander Reboot Sets Up An Epic Movie Showdown
Film director Chad Stahelski, known for directing John Wick, will oversee the remake of Highlander. The script for this long-awaited project is written by Michael Finch. It’s planned that production will begin in September, with filming taking place primarily in the United Kingdom and Hong Kong.
In 1986, the initial film titled “Highlander” hit the screens, featuring Christopher Lambert portraying Connor MacLeod, a Highlander from medieval Scotland who unexpectedly learns he is an eternal swordsman. Throughout the ages, MacLeod teams up with Ramirez, another immortal swordsman played by Sean Connery, as they engage in battles against other immortals.
In the remake, Bautista’s character Kurgen eliminates numerous immortals over centuries to gather their powers. His ultimate confrontation will be with Cavill’s MacLeod, resulting in only one Highlander surviving. Cavill, who has consistently expressed his fondness for the Highlander franchise, aims to make his portrayal of the character more than just a swordsman with charisma; instead, he intends to explore deeper themes than the original movie did. Cavill’s enthusiasm for the Highlander series is evident, and this remake serves as a personal project for him.
Over the years, the Highlander series has created a total of 6 productions: 4 live-action films (Highlander, Highlander II: The Quickening, Highlander: The Final Dimension, and Highlander: Endgame), an animated movie called Highlander: The Search for Vengeance, as well as two TV series – Highlander: The Series and Highlander: The Raven. Initially, the first Highlander film didn’t perform well at the box office with earnings of only $5.9 million worldwide; however, it has since gained a cult following. Now, all the Highlander movies can be streamed on Peacock, Tubi, and Pluto TV. Additionally, the television shows are also available for streaming, allowing viewers to explore more about the world of Highlander.
Bautista, recognized predominantly for his wrestling career and performances in the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films, is set to voice a character in “The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender” soon. Later, he will feature in the upcoming “Highlander” remake, but its release date has yet to be announced by Amazon MGM Studios and Lionsgate. Recently, the actor has been seen in “Dune: Part Two”, “My Spy: The Eternal City”, and “The Last Showgirl”.
