In the next exciting chapter of the Light & Rain storyline within DC Universe Online, titled “Fearful Day,” players embark on a thrilling journey intertwined with Green Lantern lore, particularly focusing on the emotional spectrum. This new installment introduces the colossal planet Lantern Mogo and challenges players to aid Luzia in her quest to locate her missing sister, while the ominous presence of the enigmatic Sorrow Lantern hangs overhead. Our team spoke extensively with DCUO Creative Director Al Rivera and Senior Narrative Designer Paul Reed about this new storyline’s developments for the game, as well as the creation of a fresh Lantern Oath that will be canon in both the game and comics. For more information on these topics and other intriguing details, be sure to watch our exclusive Fearful Day featurette in the video below.
Immediately dive into “Fearful Day” for an exciting adventure! If you embark on this journey, you’ll encounter a fresh objective leading you to the pulsating planet of Mogo inhabited by the Lanterns. You need to be at least level 20 to engage in these missions, which will guide you deep into the heart of Mogo. Moreover, prepare for the new raid called “Defending Mogo” where you’ll team up with Hal Jordan to uncover and thwart the malicious actions of the renegade Yellow Lantern Corps on Mogo.
In the game DC Universe Online, the multiplayer experience of Defending Mogo involves eight players, whereas Protecting Mogo is a scaled-down version for four players. However, both versions share significant moments from Defending Mogo and will have you battling Qwardian defenses and Amon Sur. Additionally, a new solo instance called Hidden Lantern Village has been added, set in a Blue Lantern settlement on Mogo, where you’ll even encounter Star Sapphire Carol Ferris. To make things more exciting, DC Universe Online has introduced Cross-Faction Grouping, enabling you to create a group and play content together regardless of your moral alignment. This feature can be accessed through the Social menu, allowing you to team up with friends who might be on opposite sides, even for events. Now, let’s dive into some questions!
What’s the reason fans are drawn to Green Lanterns, both as a concept and individual characters, and what aspects of them did you aim to emphasize in this particular storyline, Matt Aguilar from ComicBook asks?
As a gaming enthusiast, diving into the world of Green Lantern feels like merging my love for classic superhero tales with the thrilling expanse of space operas. You could say that Green Lantern’s lore has been nurtured alongside science fiction since the Silver Age, mirroring the genre’s own growth over time. It’s a fascinating blend that keeps fans like me coming back for more!
As we’ve been developing the Lantern stories for DCUO, we’ve always had the mix of Science Fiction and Superheroes at the forefront. The environment, in turn, beautifully encapsulates this fusion – Mogo, a sentient planet and a superheroic space cop!
Al Rivera – Creative Director: Over time, the Lantern mythology has undergone significant transformations, and for me, it was the Emotional Spectrum that truly captivated my interest. To my perspective, this concept represented a profound exploration of the human condition. Haven’t we all experienced intense emotions like rage, compassion, hope, or fear? The rings served as both a physical and symbolic representation of our feelings in our brightest and darkest moments. If you’ve ever felt an overpowering anger that made you want to shout, or if you’ve had a moment when all you had was hope to help you persevere, or maybe you encountered an insurmountable obstacle but pushed through it with sheer determination – the Lantern Corps brought our deepest emotions to life. In one of the Green Lantern animated series, Hal Jordan is fighting Atrocitus and appears to be losing. One Oan says, “He cannot continue, he has no strength.” Then another Oan replies, ‘He may not have the strength, but does he have the Will?’ This line struck a chord with me. Not only did it beautifully convey the source of Hal Jordan’s power, but it also reminded everyone that no matter how challenging the circumstances, you can achieve the impossible if you simply believe in yourself. In my opinion, there is nothing more heroic, relatable, or human than that sentiment.
MA: Although I have a soft spot for Earth-bound Lanterns such as Kyle Rayner and Guy Gardner, it’s the more unconventional and outlandish Lanterns like Ch’p, Salaak, Kilowog, and of course, Mogo that really grab my attention. Can you give us a hint about Mogo’s role in the story and how other fans might see his involvement as the plot unfolds?
Mogo plays a significant role in the narrative since events unfold on its surface. Unfortunately, Mogo’s not doing well; the recent battles and devastation have left him weakened, causing him to transform into a Gray Lantern. This transformation adds complexity to the plot because the Black Lanterns are trapped within his planetary core. What implications might this have for Mogo’s inhabitants and our heroes in the long run?
Other lanterns are heading to Mogo with the intention of quelling any potential dangers, but their adversaries won’t let them have an easy time… and that’s when the excitement starts!
At a time before ‘Light and Rain’, Mogo, a sentient planet, was providing shelter to numerous refugees. It shielded them and nourished them. However, Amon Sur attempted to contaminate Mogo with fear, causing it to weaken. Leveraging this weakness, Lyssa Drak tried to exploit the situation. Following the death of Luzia Cavalera’s sister at the hands of Lyssa, Luzia gains a Gray Lantern power due to her grief. This intense emotion overpowers Mogo, causing it to turn gray and precipitate, symbolizing its tears. With Mogo weakened, there is an opening for a formidable evil to emerge. The narrative continues with Mogo experiencing emotional changes during the ‘Light and Rain’ storyline, as portrayed in this and future chapters.
Question: Can you share some insights about the process of creating the Lantern Oath for the Sorrow Lanterns, a new addition to the Lantern mythology, which you developed before the comics? What were the most difficult aspects of this task and how did you ultimately arrive at the final version?
I’d like to know more about your experience in devising the Sorrow Lanterns’ Lantern Oath, a significant addition to the Lantern lore that you created before it appeared in the comics. What were the toughest parts of this endeavor and how did you arrive at the completed version? It’s quite unique and fascinating that you had the opportunity to do this.
As a devoted admirer, I delved into the vows of other Lantern Corps, examining their structure, the guiding principles within each, and the distinctive moods they conveyed for every corps. It was apparent that many of these vows followed a rhythmic pattern, reminiscent of space heroic haikus. Inspired by this, I crafted several vows that mirrored this rhythm and captured the essence of the Gray Lantern Corps. After numerous attempts, I eventually settled on the Gray Lantern oath featured in DCUO.
As a devoted enthusiast, I must admit that the allure of the Sorrow Corps initially drew me in with its unique and intriguing premise. What captivated me most was the profound emotional depth embedded within this concept – an exploration of sorrow, loss, and healing that resonates deeply with many.
In terms of the Sorrow Lanterns you’ll encounter in the game, they are enigmatic beings that embody the essence of sorrow itself. Each Lantern represents a different facet of grief, from profound sadness to bittersweet nostalgia. They serve as guides and companions throughout your journey, helping you navigate the complex emotions that arise during your adventure. Their presence adds a layer of poignancy and depth that truly sets this game apart.
The spectrum where Lanterns draw their powers is extensive, encompassing numerous emotions beyond what’s currently known. In my perspective, Sorrow is frequently a byproduct of multiple feelings within the existing Lantern Corps. Interestingly, the first Gray Lantern in comics turned gray due to sorrow (gray) resulting from heartbreak – a sorrow that stemmed from losing love (violet).
On Mogo, it’s often observed that shared suffering finds companionship. Historically, this planet has been a sanctuary for refugees, but unfortunately, it became the battleground between various Lantern Corps. This brutal conflict left many in deep despair… which eventually gave rise to the Gray Lanterns. As more people succumb to their grief and sorrow, they too, like Luzia and Mogo, are turning gray.
In the present comics: At the moment, there isn’t a group known as “Sorrow Corps”. However, there is only one character portrayed as the Gray Lantern, Nathan Broome, also known as Sorrow. If more Gray Lanterns were to appear in the story, it’s uncertain if they would form an organized group. As the DC comics series is still ongoing and the narrative is still unfolding, we will have to wait and see how the storyline develops further.
Grief is a remarkably potent emotion, and I find it fascinating that it has finally been depicted as the Lantern color in DC comics. With so many characters experiencing profound loss in their lives, it seems natural for them to be drawn to this emotional hue of the spectrum. It’s rare to find a DC character who hasn’t experienced grief at some point. In fact, most people will encounter grief at one time or another in their lives if they allow themselves to love deeply. Grief is an inevitable part of being human, which is why I believe it’s essential to delve deeper into its complexities. When we are grieving, we can become inconsolable, irrational, angry, and disoriented. We may even act out of character in our desperation to find solace and bring back the person we have lost.
As the silvery tide of Luzia envelops their world, Mogo and its inhabitants are submerged in a wave of melancholy and despair. The once vibrant beings are now tinged with shades of gray, each expressing this emotional state differently. A region on Mogo, known as the Valley of Melancholy, has become especially hazardous. At present, Luzia remains the sole Lantern wielding the Gray Power. Our heroes have yet to understand how this somber energy interacts with the broader Emotional Spectrum, a mystery we will delve into in the upcoming chapter.
How has Luzia’s character developed throughout the game, leading up to her transformation into a Grey Lantern following Esperanza’s unfortunate demise? Could you share some insights about Luzia’s journey so far and offer any hints about her future as a Grey Lantern, particularly how Esperanza’s death will influence her going forward?
As a devoted fan, I’d rephrase that for you in a more personal style:
In the DCUO universe, my favorite character, Luzia, was transformed by these mysterious entities known as Exobytes. Throughout her journey, she evolved from a hero, to a watchful guardian, then to a figure of darkness, and finally, she joined the Indigo Tribe – an extraordinary group of Lanterns who wield the power of Compassion.
As an ardent admirer, I find myself resonating deeply with Luzia’s story, a once villainous soul embarking on a journey towards atonement. Accompanied by my Blue Lantern companion, Esperanza, and guided by esteemed heroes like John Stewart and the Atom, Luzia was rediscovering her heroic essence. However, during a fierce battle on Mogo, tragedy struck when Lyssa Drak claimed the life of my cherished sister, Esperanza. This loss plunged me into an abyss of sorrow so profound that it led to my transformation into a Gray Lanring.
Luzia’s tale is yet to reach its conclusion… If the “Gray Wave” of energy from the Sorrow segment of the Emotional Spectrum is allowed to continue, it could engulf the hearts of every living being across all universes. It falls upon the players and their companions to halt this wave before time runs out.
As a gamer, I find myself deeply immersed in the storyline, where Luzia, once an Indigo Lantern, now stands broken-hearted, much like Nathan Broome from the comics. Her sister Esperanza, the only family she ever knew, was tragically taken away, leaving her to walk a path of redemption. Now, with nothing left, Luzia’s pain has transformed into grief, and it’s spreading across the planet as a wave of sorrow – a gray tide that threatens us all.
While my allies and I work tirelessly to contain this energy, others see an opportunity in the chaos. Mogo, our trusted guardian, is weakening under the weight of sorrow, and a great evil is brewing. It’s up to me to help Luzia find her way back from the darkness and save not just ourselves, but possibly the entire planet from this impending doom.
Luzia serves as the primary character in the Light and Rain narrative. Her name, a fusion of “luz” (meaning light) and “lluvia” (meaning rain) in Spanish, symbolically represents her dual nature as both radiant light and pouring rain. Translated to Portuguese, Luzia signifies ‘light born at daybreak.’ Much like everyone else, Luzia possesses the potential for profound illumination and immense darkness. At present, she finds herself navigating through a period of sorrow, with her future destinations yet to be discovered.
In the Light and Rain tale, Luzia is the lead character. Her name is derived from Spanish words – “luz” (light) and “lluvia” (rain), symbolizing her dual identity as both illuminating light and pouring rain. In Portuguese, she’s referred to as ‘Light born at Daybreak.’ Like all of us, Luzia holds the capacity for great brightness and deep darkness. Currently, she is grappling with grief and embarking on a journey towards an uncertain future.
