Katie Thurston deserves a rose for this response.
Previously featured on “The Bachelorette”, the individual who announced her breast cancer diagnosis in February, publicly called out Cody Menk following his disrespectful comment on her and husband Jeff Arcuri’s wedding photos.
Cody had commented ‘Great pair!’ back in April (as reported by Parade), referring to them as both ‘5s of good quality’ (implying they were average or acceptable).
Back in March, I exchanged vows with Jeff in a cozy backyard ceremony – time truly flies! Last Thursday, August 6th, I reposted a screenshot of a comment from one of my season’s contestants on my Instagram Stories, saying, “I barely remember this guy myself. Yet, he’s still hanging around on my page. Thanks for being such a devoted fan.
In the year 2021, Cody initially participated in Katie’s season of “The Bachelorette,” however, his journey came to an end during the second week of the series.
People swiftly rushed to Katie’s first Instagram post, with someone commenting, “I want to chat with Cody! Can you tell me where he is…
In response to the joke, the former Bachelor contestant wrote beside a combination of laughter and tears emoji, “Since I’m blocked now, I’ll never find out.
As a dedicated follower, I can tell you that Cody’s comment isn’t the only thing that keeps Katie in high spirits. Last month, she gleefully announced reaching a significant milestone in her cancer journey. Specifically, she shared that her stage four metastatic breast cancer has been positively responding to treatments.
On July 7, she shared on Instagram that her latest scans showed the tumors are reducing in size! This fantastic news has left her feeling incredibly relieved.
Katie, who mentioned that her treatment could potentially be lifelong, admitted that it took some time for her to consult a doctor once she discovered a lump in her breast.
Approximately five months ago, she revealed that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. However, in truth, she had discovered a lump about a year earlier. At the time, she was 33 years old and didn’t have any family history of cancer. Given her circumstances, it never crossed her mind that it could be cancer, but it was.
After receiving her diagnosis, the reality star accelerated her wedding plans with Jeff and started the In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) process before undergoing chemotherapy.
However, Katie has found chemotherapy challenging, bravely discussing some of the tougher side effects she’s experienced.
On Instagram in June, Katie shared that she’s been experiencing memory loss. She mentioned an instance where, while going through customs, an officer asked her about her origin, to which she responded, ‘I can’t recall. I can’t recall.’

In the summer of 2024, Katie Thurston found a small lump in her breast and became worried about it. She initially thought it could be related to her period or muscle soreness from working out. However, since she had previously had a benign cyst removed from the same breast at age 20, she assumed this new lump was similar. But when it didn’t disappear on its own, she decided to get it checked by a doctor. Unfortunately, her assumption was incorrect.
Katie’s doctor suggested a specialist for a breast ultrasound due to a concern, which was followed by a mammogram and biopsy. She revealed in an Instagram video on March 18, 2025, that it confirmed her breast cancer diagnosis, a moment she described as the worst feeling she had ever experienced. Despite having no family history of breast cancer, Katie shared this experience on Good Morning America the next day, expressing shock and lack of preparedness at being diagnosed at age 34. On February 15, 2025, she informed her fans about her stage 3 diagnosis, sharing a mix of emotions like despair, anger, sadness, denial, but also strength and readiness to fight. She plans to document her journey in the hope of helping others, having found similar stories comforting during her initial research. In her Instagram post on February 15, she mentioned this first step of acceptance as the hardest, but she is ready to battle the disease.
The news about Katie’s health diagnosis came five months after her engagement to comedian Jeff Arcuri, whom she met on Instagram in the spring of 2024. Originally, they had anticipated planning a wedding and starting a family. However, due to the diagnosis, their focus shifted towards treatment and recovery.
As a precaution, they froze embryos since there was a possibility that cancer treatments could impact Katie’s fertility. She shared on her Instagram Stories in March 2025 that out of 17 retrieved eggs, only 6 were successfully fertilized, and three made it to the blastocyst stage after genetic testing. As a result, they managed to freeze two embryos, one Grade B and one Grade C. This is a common scenario with In Vitro Fertilization (IVF).
Katie also mentioned that she and Jeff had discussed the possibility of using a surrogate in the future. She encouraged people not to judge celebrities who opt for surrogacy, as personal circumstances are often unknown to others. Finally, Katie told Good Morning America that while they were open to being a childless couple, surrogacy might be their best option when the time comes.
Katie and Jeff decided to go ahead with their wedding plans on March 22, 2025, in New York. After months of long-distance dating, the bride moved across the country. She shared with Us Weekly that their intimate ceremony took place in their apartment’s backyard, attended by their parents, officiant, and newly adopted dog Charlie. Katie found it heartwarming, as they had been planning a wedding but were unsure of what the future held due to Jeff’s cancer treatments. One night, Jeff proposed a surprise wedding for the next day, expressing his love and commitment to her. Although they plan a bigger wedding in the future, Katie felt this gesture confirmed that Jeff was committed to their relationship through sickness and health. For Jeff, there was also a practical aspect to getting married: he wanted hospital staff to know that Katie was his wife and he would not abandon her during her treatments.
Approximately a week after Jeff and Katie’s wedding, she revealed some concerning news. A PET scan had identified small spots on her liver, indicating that her cancer has progressed to stage 4. However, she expressed optimism in an Instagram video on March 28, 2025, stating, “I know the term ‘stage 4’ can be quite scary and indeed it is. But given that I am triple-positive and the liver spots were detected early, I remain hopeful about my prognosis.
Following her stage 4 diagnosis, Katie provided an update on the course of treatment for her breast cancer that had metastasized to her liver. She explained that since this was the origin of her cancer, it would be the primary focus. However, she was scheduled to start six rounds of chemotherapy when she received another update.
On April 4, 2025, Katie wrote on Instagram that she had prepared for her first round of chemotherapy, with her aunt Lindsey flying in to support her during recovery. But the day before, she got a call informing her that the pathology results from her liver, breast, and lymph nodes showed that they were HER2 Negative, despite her original samples at Kaiser being HER2+. This unexpected development meant that chemo might no longer be part of her treatment plan.
Katie acknowledged that she should feel relieved by this change but expressed frustration due to the frequent updates in her diagnosis over the past two months. She emphasized the importance of thoroughness and seeking a second medical opinion during her cancer journey.
As I navigate my journey with cancer, I find myself living one day at a time. Sometimes, I might wonder, ‘what on earth is happening to me?’ Yet, regardless of my feelings, this is my reality and I strive to make the most of it. Life, as they say, should be lived like you’re dying, but now that I am, it’s not as simple as it sounds. We are all inexorably moving towards our end, not in a gloomy sense, but as an inevitable part of life’s cycle. So whether cancer is a part of my story or not, I am fortunate to have today.
Although there are days when sadness overwhelms me, I aim to cherish every moment, with or without cancer. In the spirit of spreading awareness, I encourage everyone on my channel and beyond to remember this: don’t delay, take action. Get regular check-ups. It could be a decision that benefits you in the long run.
Recently, I shared these thoughts on Good Morning America, emphasizing the importance of proactive health care.
Nearly two months in treatment, Katie shared another new reality.
In her June 1, 2025 Instagram post, she expressed that she’s experiencing memory loss. When customs asked where she had come from, she admitted she couldn’t recall the answer, saying, “I don’t remember.
In my personal life, I recently found myself in a minor tiff with my spouse, yet I find it challenging to recall the specifics of our argument.
She said to Jeff, “This feels familiar,” she reminisced. To which he asked, “When did this happen?” She replied, “I’m not sure, but I’m certain that something similar has occurred!
She continued by saying, ‘We can joke about it now,’ and then went on to express her feelings about cancer: ‘Cancer is truly awful. Sometimes I tell myself not to wallow in self-pity. But other times, I think it’s okay to feel sorry for yourself because cancer is just terrible.’
