In his first true directorial role after directing ‘The Whitest Kids U’ Know’s ‘Barbarian’, Zach Cregger demonstrated himself as a significant force in contemporary horror. His latest film, ‘Weapons‘ featuring Julia Garner and Josh Brolin, has shown that ‘Barbarian’ was no accidental success. Cregger is known for making films that are gripping, intense, and full of unexpected twists. What isn’t surprising is that he is now being recruited to direct high-profile franchises. Firstly, he will be handling the reboot of ‘Resident Evil’, a franchise eager to deliver a faithful and entertaining adaptation that fans have long anticipated.
Is it quite possible that he’ll escape the terror? Indeed, it appears so. If given a choice to join any cinematic universe, it seems as though he would opt for James Gunn’s DCU. To be precise, this might happen through an original script of his called “Henchmen“.
Cregger declared that the script for “Henchmen” is his top favorite he’s ever penned, which undeniably sparks curiosity considering the caliber of “Barbarian” and “Weapons.” The storyline follows suit in creating intrigue. In a subgenre often characterized by grandiosity, “Henchmen” seems like something grounded with strong roots.
The story, penned by him prior to “Barbarian,” focuses on a minor criminal henchman navigating the crime-infested, grimy underbelly of Gotham City, yearning for a breakthrough. His opportunity arises when he manages to knock out Batman and holds him prisoner, presenting a chance for him to make his mark.
It appears that the DCU’s version of Batman might make an appearance in the upcoming movie, given the inclusion of minor roles for both Harley Quinn and the Joker.
Currently, director Cregger hasn’t formally proposed the project “Henchmen” to DC Studios’ leadership, Peter Safran and James Gunn. Nevertheless, it’s rumored that they are cognizant of Cregger’s ambition to collaborate with their team.
At the current stage, it’s uncertain if Henchmen will indeed become a reality. Nevertheless, given their professional ties, it appears probable that Gunn and Safran might arrange a discussion with Cregger, whether about this specific project or another opportunity.
If henchmen are given approval, it won’t occur immediately. This is primarily because Batman, who’s slated to appear in The Brave and the Bold, hasn’t been chosen yet. There are several rumored possibilities for Batman, with Alan Ritchson from Reacher being a popular one, but no decision has been made official. Moreover, if Joker and Harley Quinn are included in the storyline, their actors need to be selected as well.
Firstly, it’s worth noting that Cregger needs to demonstrate his capability in managing an IP project, and the outcome of “Resident Evil” could significantly influence DC Studios’ decision on whether to pursue Cregger and his concept further. Additionally, Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” trilogy has two more episodes left, and whatever plans Reeves has for those films will likely prioritize over any new ideas for the DCU at this time.
Simply put, Cregger seems poised for a thrilling journey ahead. Whether that includes DCU remains to be seen.
