In the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Earth-616, a catastrophic global crisis occurs almost every month, with heroes always stepping forward to risk everything for the sake of their world. On the other hand, Earth-828 has only one group of superheroes, The Fantastic Four, who successfully handle villains like Mole Man and Red Ghost while addressing various world issues. However, their abilities are not yet sufficient when Galactus’ emissary, the Silver Surfer, arrives in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, revealing that humanity’s time is running out.
Everyone finds it hard to comprehend the notion of a being that consumes entire worlds, yet there’s no moment for contemplation given the high stakes at hand. Marvel’s First Family makes every effort to ready their world for Galactus’ arrival, urging everyone in New York City to seek shelter underground. However, even Earth’s mightiest heroes are taken aback by Galactus’ behavior upon first touching down on their planet.
Galactus Stops and Smells the Roses in Fantastic Four: First Steps
The Famous Four pay a visit to Galactus, planning to discuss matters with him. The World Devourer isn’t thrilled by their arrival, yet he listens to what they have to say, especially upon discovering that Sue Storm and Mr. Fantastic have a child. This child holds the Power Cosmic, making him a potential successor to Galactus. Naturally, Reed and Sue object to this idea, so they manage to flee from Galactus’ spacecraft and return home. Upon announcing the predicament to the public, people turn against them, arguing that one life shouldn’t outweigh the safety of Earth as a whole. After some effort, the Fantastic Four rectify the situation by devising a strategy to move Earth out of Galactus’ reach.
Upon completion of all bridges worldwide, the final task remains – initiating the action. Regrettably, the Silver Surfer arrives prematurely and wreaks havoc on several bridges, leaving the Fantastic Four in a tricky situation. In response, they switch strategies and decide to send Galactus through the New York City portal instead. The World Devourer descends onto Earth, aiming for Franklin Richards, but first, he pauses to appreciate the surroundings. He examines some earth samples, causing consternation among the team, particularly Johnny Storm. He also takes a moment to gaze upon the Statue of Liberty before continuing his mission. Although it may seem that Galactus was merely astonished by something of comparable size, a new hypothesis suggests that the statue holds significant importance within the Marvel Cinematic Universe multiverse.
Spider-Man May Have Ruined the Statue of Liberty for Everyone
It’s not uncommon for superhero stories to feature New York City and its iconic landmarks like the Statue of Liberty. For instance, the Statue of Liberty appears in films like X-Men, where Magneto uses it as a platform to broadcast an energy wave that transforms humans into mutants. However, X-Men is not connected to the main Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), so there’s no direct link between it and First Steps. In contrast, Spider-Man: No Way Home and First Steps both involve the Statue of Liberty, with the latter hinting at a potential connection due to Doctor Strange possibly using magic there to send villains into other realities. This event could be an incursion, a powerful occurrence that might destroy entire realities. Given Galactus’ age and power, he may sense these aftershocks, explaining his visit to the Statue of Liberty in First Steps.
Galactus is currently taking a break far off in another galaxy, so he won’t be stirring up trouble for a while. Yet, another antagonist, Doctor Doom, is gearing up for an invasion across the multiverse, which might lead him to a different rendition of the Statue of Liberty as depicted in Avengers: Doomsday. Spider-Man tried to act honorably by asking Strange to erase his identity, but his actions could potentially endanger the entire multiverse.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is in theaters.
