As a devoted comic book aficionado, I’d be remiss not to sing the praises of Wolverine, a character who has undeniably left an indelible mark on the world of comics. This unyielding anti-hero, with his penchant for violence and unwavering determination, paved the way for the acceptance and popularity of complex characters that straddle the line between good and evil.
Wolverine’s influence extends far beyond his initial appearances, playing a crucial role in the rise of the X-Men to the heights they now occupy. Over the years, he has graced the pages of countless comics, evolving and adapting in ways that never cease to astound. However, it’s worth noting that even the mighty Wolverine is not immune to setbacks – such as the unfortunate incident with Tom Brevoort’s decision to revert some progress reminiscent of Spider-Man’s regressive storytelling.
But let’s not forget that above all else, Wolverine is synonymous with raw, unbridled action. His razor-sharp claws, indestructible skeleton, and regenerative abilities make him a force to be reckoned with, allowing him to hold his own against even the mightiest of foes. It’s this bloodthirsty fighting style that has earned him legions of fans, who have been treated to some of the most brutal and memorable battles in Marvel history featuring none other than our favorite Canadian mutant and a rogues gallery that would make even Batman quake in his boots.
Since the new millennium commenced, comic battles have undergone significant transformations; the withdrawal of Marvel and DC from the Comics Code Authority enabled fights to become significantly more violent. Despite earlier censorship, Wolverine has always been involved in some incredibly violent brawls. Wolverine, who turned 50 years old, has provided comic enthusiasts with some of the most intense and bloody battles in the history of comics. These ten Wolverine fights are gruesome, blood-drenched confrontations that pushed Wolverine to his absolute limits.
10) Wolverine vs. Cyber from Wolverine (Vol. 2) #79
In 1991, the character Cyber made their debut in Marvel Comics Presents #85, but it wasn’t until 1994’s Volume 2, issue 79 of Wolverine that they truly came into prominence. In this storyline, Wolverine’s adamantium skeleton was torn from his body through his pores, revealing that his claws were not made of bone and his healing factor was pushed to its limits. As a result, Wolverine left the X-Men and traveled to Canada where he faced off against Lady Deathstrike, Bloodscream, and Scylla. Although he emerged victorious in these battles, it was his encounter with Cyber that proved most challenging. Cyber’s body had been fortified with adamantium, making them a formidable foe for Wolverine who was previously able to best them. However, during their confrontation, Cyber managed to get the upper hand and shatter Wolverine’s bone claws in a brutal showdown. This encounter highlighted just how much trouble Wolverine was in if he couldn’t find a smarter way to fight.
9) Wolverine and Daken’s Last Battle in Uncanny X-Force (Vol. 1) #34
In years past, Wolverine and his son Daken clashed fiercely, but their most intense battle occurred recently. Daken assembled a new group of mutants, known as the Brotherhood, with the intention of killing Wolverine. He orchestrated a trap where Wolverine would be drowned, one of the few effective ways to end his life. The Brotherhood and Wolverine’s X-Force engaged in combat, leading to a final showdown between father and son. They both gave their all, each determined to eliminate the other. Their regenerative abilities kept them fighting, but eventually, Wolverine employed the same tactic that Daken had planned against him – drowning. As Daken fought for breath, Wolverine held his head beneath a puddle. Throughout the battle, a narration reflected on the life Daken yearned to share with his father, featuring glimpses of the peaceful existence they could have enjoyed if the Winter Soldier hadn’t killed Daken’s wife Itsu and Romulus hadn’t taken him as an infant. This fight was particularly grueling because a man drowned the son who had been manipulated into hating him unfairly.
8) Wolverine and Sabretooth’s First Fight at Marvel in Uncanny X-Men #213
Wolverine often faces his arch-nemesis, Sabretooth, in numerous encounters throughout their history, marked by intense and violent fights. For the first time readers encountered this fierce rivalry (not necessarily the first chronologically, but their comic debut fight) in “Uncanny X-Men” issue #213. This confrontation took place during the “Mutant Massacre” storyline, where Sabretooth emerged from the Morlock Tunnels and charged towards the X-Mansion, with Wolverine hot on his heels. The ensuing battle, skillfully depicted by artist Alan Davis, was a spectacle like no other, showcasing their relentless determination to outdo each other in savagery and potentially end each other’s life.
7) Logan Killing the Hulk Gang in Giant-Size Wolverine: Old Man Logan #1
The narrative “Old Man Logan” revolves around an aged Wolverine, who embarks on a nationwide journey alongside Hawkeye. Throughout the story, Logan adopts a peaceful demeanor, but soon uncovers that their predicament was a trap intended for Hawkeye or any hero misled by rumors of resistance. This revelation triggers Wolverine to kill the Red Skull. To settle debts with the Hulk Gang, he dons old Iron Man armor and pays them protection money, but arrives too late; they have already massacred his family. Enraged, Logan vows revenge and sets out to eliminate every member of the Hulk Gang. The artist Steve McNiven provides a series of brutal, graphic scenes, culminating in a fierce battle between Wolverine and the Hulk. Despite being overpowered, the Hulk ultimately consumes Wolverine. However, Wolverine’s healing factor miraculously keeps him alive, allowing him to tear himself free from within the Hulk’s body, annihilating him in the process. This tale is one of the most violent and gory Marvel stories ever told.
6) Wolverine Battles Grey Hulk in The Incredible Hulk #340
As a passionate moviegoer who adores the Marvel Universe, I’ve always looked forward to the epic showdowns between iconic characters like Wolverine and the Hulk. Known for his devastating strength and nearly limitless power, the Hulk leaves a path of destruction wherever he goes. On the other hand, Wolverine boasts an indestructible skeleton, retractable claws that can slice through anything, and an unparalleled healing factor. Their battles have left a lasting impact on Marvel’s rich history.
However, among all their encounters, it’s generally agreed that their most memorable fight took place in The Incredible Hulk #340. The Hulk was accused of causing a plane crash, prompting Wolverine to confront him. The ensuing battle was the most intense between these two titans. Since it was the Grey Hulk, who had reduced strength compared to his regular self, Wolverine seized the opportunity and managed to inflict significant damage on the Green Goliath.
At first, it seemed like a victory for Wolverine over the Grey Goliath, but the Hulk’s incredible healing factor soon came into play. The Hulk became enraged and turned the tables on Wolverine, brutally attacking him and bringing the mutant to the brink of defeat. This iconic fight, masterfully crafted by creators Peter David and Todd McFarlane, still stands as a testament to these characters’ enduring appeal, more than 30 years after its creation.
5) Logan and Sabretooth Have the First Fight of their Lives in Wolverine (Vol. 2) #10
In #213 of Uncanny X-Men, readers were introduced to the initial confrontation between Wolverine and Sabretooth, marking their first recorded fight. Conversely, in volume 2, issue 10 of Wolverine, we witness their very first skirmish throughout their lives. On a significant day, Logan, who was dating Silver Fox at the time, ventured out to catch dinner by fishing. Tragically, Sabretooth intruded upon their cabin and murdered Silver Fox, prompting an enraged Wolverine to pursue him relentlessly and engage in combat. However, during this encounter, Wolverine was without his adamantium skeleton and had forgotten that he possessed retractable claws (a detail often altered in Wolverine’s history). As a result, Sabretooth managed to overpower him. Renowned writer Chris Claremont created some of the most memorable Wolverine/Sabretooth battles, and this one is no exception. What truly elevates it is the artwork from John Buscema, expertly inked by Bill Sienkiewicz. Their collaboration resulted in a visually stunning, intense fight sequence. Although there isn’t much blood depicted in this battle, the raw violence of the encounter remains undeniable.
4) Bone Claw Wolverine vs. Sabretooth, Round One from Wolverine (Vol. 2) #90
In the thrilling issue #90 of Volume 2 of ‘Wolverine’, we find Wolverine back at the X-Mansion, only to discover that the X-Men are absent. However, there’s one mutant left – Sabretooth. Despite Wolverine’s resolve to spare his foe, Sabretooth provokes a fight by escaping his cell. The ensuing confrontation is their most intense yet, each trying to outdo the other in an attempt to inflict lethal damage. Sabretooth taunts Wolverine, threatening to seek out every woman he has ever loved after eliminating him. This provocation triggers Wolverine into a frenzy, leading to a brutal and emotional battle against his arch-nemesis. Larry Hama, the writer of ‘Wolverine’ (Vol. 2) #90, crafted an extraordinary fight scene between these two characters, one that stands out amongst their many encounters due to its raw emotion and intense violence.
3) Wolverine Fights Sabretooth to Save His Mother in Wolverine (Vol. 8) #11
The eighth volume of Wolverine, as I see it, doesn’t stand out. It seems to recycle many previous Wolverine storylines, albeit with a solitary intriguing concept. Despite this, there is one noteworthy aspect – the fight scene in issue #11. Martin Coccolo’s art has its strong points, but it occasionally appears hurried. The fight between Wolverine and Sabretooth, however, is an exception. They’re engaged in a vicious battle to rescue Wolverine’s supposedly deceased mother, which has earned its spot among the most brutal fights in Wolverine’s history. Writer Saladin Ahmed seems to be following a different approach in this series, but this fight sequence certainly deserves recognition.
2) Bone Claw Wolverine vs Sabretooth, Round 2 from Wolverine (Vol. 2) #126
In the comic series “Wolverine” (Vol. 2), issues #125-128, Chris Claremont resumed writing duties, delivering an exceptional Wolverine battle that fans still remember fondly. The story unfolds as Wolverine is coerced into marrying Viper due to a promise made to his friend Seraph, but the ceremony is disrupted by Sabretooth. A violent confrontation ensues, with Kitty Pryde witnessing an unusual aspect – Sabretooth purposefully avoids direct bone-on-bone contact with Wolverine, allowing himself to be hit in less vulnerable areas. It appears that Wolverine has emerged victorious, but then a shocking revelation unfolds: Sabretooth has been equipped with an adamantium skeleton. This unexpected twist leads to a swift and brutal conclusion, as the once superior Sabretooth overpowers Wolverine, shattering his claws and hurling him off a cliff. The fierce fight sequence between these two rivals, masterfully illustrated by artist Leinil Yu, is a must-see for any comic book enthusiast.
1) X-Men (Vol 2) #25
In essence, this narrative revolves around a pivotal confrontation within an X-Men saga, often remembered for the epic battle between Wolverine and Magneto. The comic book series “X-Men” (Vol. 2) #25 marks the climax of the “Fatal Attractions” storyline. Here, Magneto, utilizing his magnetic powers, unleashes an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) that incapacitates Earth. Shi’Ar technology aids the X-Men in surviving the EMP’s effects, and Professor X leads a team of X-Men to Magneto’s space station, Avalon, with the intention of eliminating him.
During the confrontation, Magneto manages to hold his own against the team. However, Wolverine catches Magneto off guard. In a moment that could have resulted in Magneto’s death, Wolverine instead taunts him. This provocation earns Wolverine Magneto’s wrath, as he rips out the adamantium from Wolverine’s skeleton through his pores – an act that remains one of the most brutal experiences in Wolverine’s life and sets the stage for many years of Wolverine demonstrating that he is more than just his indestructible skeleton.
