Brand New Day“. This means that the Hulk, known from the Marvel Universe and previously seen in the Avengers, is expected to join forces with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and Jon Bernthal’s Punisher. According to Marvel producer Kevin Feige, this movie seems to focus on street-level events, serving as a follow-up to the multiverse chaos of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” from 2021.
In simpler terms, Mark Ruffalo’s character Bruce Banner could play a role in the upcoming Spider-Man movies similar to Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange. Moreover, there might be scenes where Banner transforms into the Hulk, causing chaos in New York City for the first time since 2008’s The Incredible Hulk.
In the comic books, Spider-Man and the Hulk have a history of both teaming up and facing off against each other. Here are some tales from their past interactions which may provide insights into how Hulk will feature in the upcoming series, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day”.
Amazing Spider-Man #14
For the first time, Spider-Man’s sworn enemy, the Green Goblin, made his appearance, filled with other notable characters. Unaware, Spider-Man strolled into a New Mexico cave where the Hulk had been in seclusion. The Green Goblin tricked Spider-Man into the desert to attack him with the Enforcers – Fancy Dan, Montana, and Ox. However, their fight disturbed the Hulk’s peaceful solitude when it encroached on his hideout.
In his debut alongside other notables, Spider-Man’s arch-nemesis, the Green Goblin, appeared. Mistakingly entering a cave in New Mexico, Spider-Man found himself hiding the Hulk who was in seclusion. The Green Goblin led Spider-Man into the desert to ambush him with his associates – Fancy Dan, Montana, and Ox. But their fight disturbed the Hulk’s tranquility when it invaded his solitude.
In this rephrased version, I’ve aimed to maintain the original meaning while making it easier and more natural to read:
The Hulk suspected that the wall-crawler in flashy attire was there to apprehend him, so he attacked when the Green Goblin stood by, delighted to watch the spectacle of the giant green creature crushing a tiny insect. However, Spider-Man’s agility kept him out of the Hulk’s reach, but his webs couldn’t hold back the rampaging behemoth. The strength of a spider, proportionate as it may be, wasn’t enough to compete with the Hulk’s raw power. Consequently, Spider-Man had to quickly move out of the Hulk’s path before placing himself in harm’s way to rescue the Enforcers (action being his reward!).
Amazing Spider-Man Annual #3
In the comic book “To Become an Avenger,” Earth’s most powerful champions – Captain America, Hawkeye, and founding members Iron Man, Thor, Wasp, and Goliath (previously known as Ant-Man and Giant-Man) – pondered inviting the solitary Spider-Man to join their group. They sought Daredevil’s opinion on this potential new recruit. Subsequently, they proposed membership for Spider-Man, but only if he could successfully complete their trial: apprehending the Hulk, who had been seen causing chaos in New York City.
In a city’s Gamma Ray Research Center, Spider-Man encountered the ex-Avenger. However, his attempt to apprehend this individual infuriated the Hulk. Ignoring Hulk’s plea for solitude, Spider-Man’s actions led to an outburst of rage from the Hulk, who in turn destroyed Gamma Ray equipment that would have transformed him back into Dr. Bruce Banner.
In this rephrased version, I’ve aimed to make the text more conversational and easy to understand:
When Spider-Man discovered that Hulk’s green-skinned form was vulnerable immediately after transforming, he seized the opportunity to land a punch on his hulking foe. However, as Hulk transformed back into Banner, Spidey decided to wrap him up in webbing but then released him when he realized Banner needed assistance. It transpired that the Avengers too were eager to aid Hulk, but Spider-Man hadn’t yet earned full membership among them at that time.
Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America #4
During the tumultuous period following the superhero conflict sparked by the Superhuman Registration Act, Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America, appeared to be killed. In a moment of quiet contemplation, the Spider-Man clad in black visited a cemetery, standing before the graves of his parents, Mary and Richard Parker, as well as his dear uncle, Ben. Unbeknownst to him, his spider-sense was activated by the Rhino. Thinking the villain was a threat, Spider-Man swiftly intervened, only realizing later that he had disrupted the Rhino’s visit to honor his mother.
In a reminiscent flashback, Spider-Man recalls battling the Hulk for the first or second time, as the raging Rhino brought back memories of that encounter in New York City. “The Hulk was causing chaos in the city, and someone had to intervene,” Spidey mused. However, before the Hulk could destroy him, Captain America stepped in with his shield, subduing the rampant Hulk (assisted by Spider-Man).
Amazing Spider-Man #119-120
College student Peter Parker made his way to Canada when Aunt May received a call to Montreal, Quebec. Meanwhile, the Hulk was seen engaging in combat with villain Tiger-Shark near Niagara Falls. Seizing this opportunity, Peter devised a plan to fund his own journey northward by photographing Spider-Man clashing with the Hulk for J. Jonah Jameson of The Daily Bugle. Upon arriving in Canada, Peter attended a press conference orchestrated by General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, who announced that the Hulk had been spotted at a power station on the St. Lawrence Seaway.
During a confrontation, Spider-Man encountered the enraged Hulk attacking Canadian soldiers who were pursuing him. To deter General Ross and his military force, Hulk destroyed the Maskattawan Dam. However, Spider-Man managed to stop the monster from causing a flood in a nearby village below. In their fight, Hulk attempted to hit Spider-Man with a steel beam, but Spider-Man’s quick reflexes allowed him to dodge the attacks.
This version maintains the original storyline but is more easily understood by readers who may not be familiar with superhero comics or specific terminology used in the original text.
During their two-issue battle against the colossal green character, Spider-Man almost met his demise when he was trapped under a massive slab of concrete but luckily, the superhero known as Spider-Man managed to halt the Hulk’s destructive flood in the valley. The Hulk subsequently leapt away, and their combat continued on Montreal’s Notre Dame Island. At the crucial moment, the Canadian military arrived just in time to keep Hulk from crushing Spider-Man – you can imagine what he might have squashed instead!
Marvel Team-Up #27
Following a prison break attempt where the Chameleon posed as Spider-Man, this master of disguise found himself face-to-face, or rather body-to-body, with the Hulk. The sight of the Chameleon’s blank mask infuriated the Hulk initially, but his longtime friend Rick Jones, who had just become a victim of identity theft, managed to calm him down. Manipulating the Hulk, Rick convinced him to free Joe Cord, the prisoner. This led to Spider-Man crossing paths with the emerald colossus once more shortly after their confrontation in Canada.
In a determined effort to aid his companion, the Hulk pushed past Spider-Man, charging through the prison towards Cord’s cell. Upon finding Cord and bringing him to someone known as Rick, Spider-Man exposed the Chameleon as the true friend of the Hulk, thus clearing the latter’s name in the process. The innocent-seeming Hulk felt betrayed by the deceit, but eventually, the Chameleon was captured without harm and both Spider-Man and the Hulk ended their encounter on friendly terms.
Marvel Team-Up #53-54, Marvel Team-Up #126
A two-part event led the Hulk to Liberty, New Mexico, a town deserted except for one unusual character named Woodgod – a being created by scientists who combined human and animal DNA in a biogenetic experiment. Later, during an encounter with the X-Men, Spider-Man found himself caught in a fight between the Hulk and Woodgod.
In Marvel Comic #126, Bruce Banner is once again in Manhattan, but this time he transforms into the Hulk against his will. Coincidentally, Peter Parker aka Spider-Man was nearby and quickly stepped up to intervene. As the Hulk went on a rampage, destroying a S.W.A.T. team’s equipment, Spider-Man strategically diverted the Hulk away from the authorities, leaping through the city to create distance between the green giant and the police force. The Hulk pursued Spider-Man in mid-air, showcasing his incredible strength and agility.
In a secluded industrial area, Spider-Man guided the Hulk and waited until he settled down and transformed back into Bruce Banner. Once that happened, it was gentle Peter Parker who offered the destitute fugitive his final five dollars and some encouraging advice: “Remember to pass on this kindness.
Incredible Hulk #299-300
When the formidable Hulk, who was once a hero, had been transformed by Nightmare, a villain of Doctor Strange, into an uncontrollable, destructive beast, S.H.I.E.L.D. couldn’t prevent the chaos. From his shadowy realm, Nightmare set the mindless colossus upon Doctor Strange, and the enraged Hulk, with only one thought in his head: DESTROY.
In the Sanctum Sanctorum, Strange surmised that Bruce Banner’s personality had been swallowed up by his violent gamma-exposed alternate self, the Hulk. As the city of New York was laid waste by the enraged monster, street-level heroes like Spider-Man and Daredevil saved civilians while the Fantastic Four’s Human Torch, Heroes for Hire’s Luke Cage and Iron Fist, and eventually the Avengers confronted the wild Hulk. Unbeknownst to them, the Hulk was being controlled by Nightmare, a manipulator of minds.
To prevent the Hulk from causing any further destruction, Doctor Strange was compelled to send his previous comrade into exile at the Crossroads, a dimension-crossing location where he wouldn’t be able to hurt anyone else. It is worth mentioning that issue #300 of the Incredible Hulk comic book series coincided with a period when Bruce Banner managed to control his alter ego better, transforming into a more heroic Hulk. This mirrors the public’s acceptance of the Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe five years after the Thanos snap.
Web of Spider-Man #44, Incredible Hulk #349
During his holiday in Las Vegas, Spider-Man found himself embroiled in a conflict with Warzone: a paramilitary team of cyborg mercenaries. Engaging in combat along the Las Vegas Strip, their weapons attracted the notice of Mr. Fixit, a gangster dressed in a suit – who Spider-Man later identified as the Hulk, characterized by his gray skin.
Under the alias Joe Fixit, the Hulk established a presence in Las Vegas following rumors of his demise when the Leader exploded a gamma bomb in Arizona. However, instead of allowing Sin City to suffer casualties in the battle between Warzone’s Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, and Fixit, Spider-Man successfully persuaded the Hulk to join him in protecting innocent civilians caught in the line of fire.
Amazing Spider-Man #328
In the Acts of Vengeance storyline, who is the most powerful among them all? During this time, Spider-Man was granted the cosmic powers of Captain Universe. When Sebastian Shaw from the Hellfire Club sought to eliminate this godlike Spider-Man, he hired a Hulk residing in Las Vegas to collect a large reward on him.
In an isolated battle on Roosevelt Island, Spider-Man delivered such a powerful blow to the Hulk that he sent him soaring into outer space. Similar to his original portrayal, Banner would transform into the Hulk at night and revert back during the day. Seizing the opportunity, Spider-Man ventured out into space to rescue the Hulk before dawn. Once saved, the Hulk reluctantly conceded defeat and decided to forgo Shaw’s reward instead.
On a deserted Roosevelt Island, Spider-Man struck the Hulk with such force that he propelled him into orbit. Much like his initial character, Banner would transform into the Hulk at night and return to normal during the day. Seizing the chance, Spider-Man journeyed into space to rescue the Hulk before sunrise. After being saved, the Hulk admitted defeat grudgingly and opted to relinquish Shaw’s bounty instead.
Web of Spider-Man #69-70
After losing his cosmic powers, Peter Parker, also known as Spider-Man, was assigned to capture footage of a wild creature rampaging through Connecticut’s countryside. To everyone’s surprise, it was none other than the green Hulk. Later, Armand Jones, brother of a former villain of the Fantastic Four, utilized a device that absorbs bio-kinetic energy to drain the Hulk’s gamma energy, thereby transforming Spider-Man into the fearsome Spider-Hulk.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but draw parallels between myself and Bruce Banner. Just like him, my stress, fury, and anxiety often lead to a transformation – not into a monstrous Hulk, but perhaps into a more intense version of myself.
Upon investigating Jones’ device, I came to the conclusion that it had infused me with the Hulk’s bio-energy. To reverse the gamma-irradiated condition that ensued, I needed a second dose from that very same device – and, thankfully, it worked! I was once again free of the Spider-Hulk’s powerful grip.
Amazing Spider-Man #381-382
During an incident involving a radiation virus designed to unleash hidden feelings, Doctor Samson transformed into an enraged monster due to his gamma therapy. As a result of this virus transferring to him, Professor Hulk (a combination of Banner’s intellect and the Green Hulk’s strength) encountered Spider-Man. With both Samson and the Hulk becoming aggressive, Spider-Man found himself in a tough fight against these gamma-enhanced creatures.
A radiation virus caused Doc Samson to become violent due to his gamma therapy. This virus then affected the Professor Hulk (a blend of Banner’s brainpower and the Green Hulk’s muscle), leading to a confrontation with Spider-Man. As both Samson and the Hulk became aggressive, Spider-Man was thrust into a challenging battle against gamma-altered beings.
After Samson woke up, Dr. Strange and Spider-Man united to confront the super-powered Hulk, who had grown more formidable due to his suppressed anger. What initially appeared to be a physical fight transformed into a mental standoff as Spider-Man reasoned with Super-Hulk, attempting to bring out the rational Banner persona within him and overpower the virus affecting the primitive Hulk’s mind.
Marvel Fanfare #47
On another occasion, the Hulk was exposed to a mind-manipulating virus. During a time when Bruce Banner had the ability to control his transformations at will, Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D., along with a scientist and an expert in gamma radiation, embarked on a mission into space. Their objective was to repair a satellite that had been struck by gamma rays. An alien organism, which proved harmful to the Hulk, infected his nervous system while they were there, causing him to revert back into the monstrous form known as the Green Goliath. After being flung from space, he landed in the South Bronx, forcing Spider-Man, who was ill with flu symptoms at the time, to guard a city block against the rampaging Hulk.
In a frenzy, the Hulk struggled to keep the aggressive extraterrestrial ooze at bay, causing chaos in a bustling neighborhood. Amidst this turmoil, our local hero, Spider-Man, swooped in to shield the innocent bystanders from the collision of Hulk and S.H.I.E.L.D.’s lethal drones. A drone attack accidentally dislodged the alien parasite, echoing the events in “War of the Worlds.” It was the germs from Spider-Man’s cold that ultimately triumphed, bringing peace to the city.
Peter Parker: Spider-Man #14
In this rephrased version, I’ve aimed to maintain the original narrative while making it more accessible and engaging:
When Mary Jane Watson, Peter Parker’s wife, was tragically believed to have perished in a plane crash, Spider-Man embarked on a relentless pursuit of the colossal, emerald menace suspected of causing the deaths of 368 people in another catastrophic air disaster. However, it was later revealed that this calamity was orchestrated not by the green giant himself but by Tyrannus, an adversary of the Hulk who rules beneath the earth’s surface.
As a die-hard movie fan, let me rephrase that scene for you: After being acquitted, the Hulk found himself in hot water with Spider-Man who was determined to prove him guilty of a crime he didn’t commit. Plagued by grief over Mary Jane’s demise, I couldn’t shake off my rage and took it out on the Hulk, who was similarly mourning his wife Betty Ross. (Spoiler alert: They both managed to come back from the dead.) Our confrontation wrecked a train track, but before an incoming train could meet its doom, the Hulk stepped in to help out his buddy “Bug Man” fix it up.
Immortal Hulk: Great Power #1
In a puzzling turn of events, Spider-Man unexpectedly metamorphosed into Spider-Hulk. This transformation led to chaos, but was eventually stopped by the Fantastic Four. Upon investigation, it was uncovered that the mischievous deity Loki had been the culprit behind Hulk’s departure from Banner. By manipulating his gamma radiation, Loki forced this change upon Spider-Man instead.
In simpler terms, after Spider-Man agreed to take over as the Hulk from Banner and regained his gamma-infused form, he was taken aback when the Hulk revealed knowledge of his secret identity, Peter Parker, despite efforts to conceal it. “You made everyone forget who you are,” the Hulk pointed out. “But I don’t forget.
Marvel Knights: The Punisher #37
In the comic book series written by Garth Ennis, titled Punisher, Frank Castle orchestrated an encounter between the Hulk, Spider-Man, Daredevil, and Wolverine. The storyline unfolds with a criminal organization capturing the Hulk when he transformed back into Bruce Banner. They intended to auction him off, but the Punisher intervened, eliminating those planning to exploit the Hulk for their own gain. To put an end to this, Castle tricked Banner into consuming a diet of C4 explosives and Immodium with a micro-detonator, forcing the Hulk to transform back into Banner under the threat of imminent explosion, thus revealing his human form.
