In the aftermath of the first beta for Battlefield 6 and with the second one set to begin later this week, there’s been a lot of talk about whether or not skill-based matchmaking is being employed in the multiplayer shooter. To clear up any confusion and potentially prevent negative feedback, lead producer David Sirland has addressed this topic on social media platform X by stating that Battlefield 6 does indeed factor in player skill when determining matches. However, it’s important to note that this aspect is not one of the primary considerations for the game’s matchmaking system.
As a dedicated gamer diving into the world of this new title, I can confirm that during the initial open beta, the matchmaking system was already taking all factors into account that the game will consider at launch for a fair and balanced experience. When it comes to your in-game ping, rest assured, it remains the top priority for this system. Furthermore, I’m thrilled to share that the matchmaking system intelligently balances teams, ensuring a diverse range of skill levels across the game for an enjoyable and competitive gaming environment.
Sirland clarified: “In the open beta, we’ve utilized all the matchmaking priorities we plan for launch. These priorities are consistent with those used in our previous titles. We prioritize ping and time to game above most factors. While skill level is a factor, it ranks quite low on our list. For our larger modes, a balanced distribution of skill levels is crucial for them to function effectively. The sandbox mode requires various types of skills to operate efficiently, which is why the matchmaker adjusts teams during the process to ensure balance.
Via this setup, the Battlefield 6 game aims to eliminate issues such as entering matches with significant lag or high pings. Additionally, it appears that the system is designed to prevent one team from having a majority of expert players while the other consists mainly of beginners. Instead, it seems the goal is to distribute both high-skilled and low-skilled players evenly across both teams for a fairer gameplay experience.
In simpler terms, Sirland shared some insights about the server browser for Battlefield 6, which will be accessible via Portal. He emphasized that Battlefield 6’s server browser offers a mix of long-lasting game servers with comprehensive player progression along with custom servers and ongoing matches, making it an ideal blend for the game. Moreover, he mentioned that testing on the server browser is scheduled to commence shortly.
He explained that the server browser he was referring to hosts various servers, including custom and verified ones (which are typically what people seek in this context). However, he found the mix of permanently active servers and those temporarily created less useful. Matchmaking servers can be activated quickly and filled with players within seconds before shutting down after a game ends. The brief period when these servers lose many players during the game, as well as the couple of seconds it takes for them to spin up, is the only opportunity to join, making it a challenging combination that often leads to queueing issues.
Our system offers you flexibility, allowing you to select from three options: join a server that’s been automatically matched for you, opt for a server that’s already up and running, or even create your own. Soon, we’ll be introducing a server browser feature to enhance your experience.
The new installment in the Battlefield series, Battlefield 6, is set to release for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on October 10th. Players can get a sneak peek as an open beta starts from August 14th. Here’s our take on the game so far.
Ability is an important consideration, yet it ranks relatively low compared to other factors. For our large modes to perform optimally, a diverse range of skills is required. This diversity of skills is crucial for the sandbox to function effectively. That’s why the matchmaking system balances teams during the process, ensuring that each team has an even distribution of skills.
