After facing criticism with the second season of “House of the Dragon“, prospects are brighter for an upcoming “Game of Thrones” spinoff. HBO is still actively seeking opportunities to grow the Westeros universe following the conclusion of “Game of Thrones”. The series “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is slated for release in early 2026, ahead of “House of the Dragon Season 3” which follows later in the year. However, this isn’t the only project HBO has planned for the franchise.
There are numerous other spinoffs in development, such as an “Aegon’s Conquest” series, a show titled “10,000 Ships” focusing on Princess Nymeria leading the Rhoynar to Dorne, and potentially even a movie based on Game of Thrones. Despite HBO receiving criticism for “House of the Dragon” Season 2, particularly regarding its pacing, cliffhanger ending, and deviations from the books, they seem unphased. Fortunately, some upcoming shows are well-prepared to steer clear of those same issues, with “Aegon’s Conquest” being one of the most highly anticipated Game of Thrones spinoffs.
Aegon’s Conquest Seems Likely To Avoid House Of The Dragon’s Problems
Although not yet formally announced as a confirmed series, there’s good reason to anticipate the Aegon’s Conquest show with optimism. This upcoming production will delve into the Targaryens’ rise to power in Westeros under King Aegon I, chronicling their conquest. Mattson Tomlin, who co-wrote The Batman and its sequel, is developing this show, and he recently confirmed on X (previously known as Twitter) that George R.R. Martin will be part of the project. However, the exact nature of his involvement remains unclear; it’s unlikely that Martin will write any of the series, but he’ll likely act as a consultant for Tomlin, providing guidance on the storyline.
Given Martin’s criticism of “House of the Dragon” on his blog before deleting the post, this development suggests a positive outcome. Martin had concerns about changes made to the story, particularly regarding the Blood and Cheese plot line and its potential negative implications. The fact that he is still working on the Aegon’s Conquest series implies that the show may remain true to the original story and effectively bring the Conquest to life as fans anticipate.
Certainly, just as some people had positive views about “House of the Dragon” initially, even praising parts of Season 2, George R.R. Martin himself shared similar sentiments. However, it became clear that there were disagreements in opinion later on. But since Martin is still engaged with Aegon’s Conquest and has already expressed approval for “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” we can hope that this time, the show will strike a good balance between staying true to the source material and making appropriate adjustments for television adaptation.
One House Of The Dragon Change Will Impact Aegon’s Conquest
The TV series “House of the Dragon” has introduced several modifications not just to George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood,” but also to the broader “Game of Thrones” universe. One significant change is the reinterpretation of Aegon the Conqueror’s dream from “A Song of Ice and Fire.” In this prequel, it’s revealed that Aegon was motivated not by personal ambition or thirst for power, but rather by his vision of an impending winter that would plunge the world into darkness. He believed that only a Targaryen ruling Westeros could withstand and overcome such a catastrophe.
This transformation doesn’t merely reinterpret “Game of Thrones” Season 8 and the White Walkers’ battle, but rather it seems to be shaping up as a series based on Aegon’s Conquest. Given Tomlin’s project, it’s likely that this shift will involve a visual portrayal of the dream itself. Leaving out this alteration might feel incongruous within the HBO “Game of Thrones” universe, creating a disjointed feel. However, it’s worth noting that while Martin has been resistant to some changes, this particular one originated from him.
Back in 2018, Martin initially discussed Aegon’s conquest of Westeros due to the White Walkers. This concept was later confirmed by House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal to Insider, who explained: “George R.R. Martin casually mentioned this detail during our story development – that Aegon the Conqueror was a dreamer and it was this motivation behind his conquest.
Aegon’s Conquest Could Be The Biggest Game Of Thrones Spinoff
Aegon’s Conquest isn’t without its hurdles, even with George R.R. Martin involved. The narrative is generally clear-cut as Aegon, his wives, and their three dragons appear almost invincible to much of Westeros. However, it also holds all the elements necessary for a massive triumph – family intrigue, politics, and plenty of dragon-filled excitement. The imagined scenes of Balerion, Meraxes, and Vhagar setting Westeros ablaze with fire and fury could make for an epic television series, potentially making it one of HBO’s most successful shows and possibly even the biggest spinoff. This is the Targaryen story we’re talking about, so it should be a grand slam for HBO.
You can stream all seasons of “Game of Thrones” as well as Seasons 1 and 2 of “House of the Dragon” on HBO Max.
