Despite the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean film being a reboot, producer Jerry Bruckheimer is optimistic that our favorite character, Jack Sparrow, will join us for another thrilling voyage. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bruckheimer mentioned he’s been discussing the idea of Johnny Depp reprising his role as Jack Sparrow. Bruckheimer has always welcomed Depp back to the franchise, but the actor’s future in Pirates might hinge on his response to the script. Bruckheimer hinted that if Depp is satisfied with the script, he’d be more than eager for him to return.
Bruckheimer stated that if he finds the script appealing, he believes he’d be inclined to perform it. Essentially, it boils down to the quality of the writing, a fact we can all agree upon.
Johnny Depp has featured in all five Pirates of the Caribbean movies released so far, last appearing in 2017’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Over the past few years, there’s been a lot of speculation about whether the actor will reprise his role as Jack Sparrow in future films. During his defamation trial, Depp himself seemed to suggest he wouldn’t be returning. However, recent news suggests he might change his mind. In fact, it was mentioned last December that there are currently two scripts being written – one with Jack Sparrow and one without – leaving the possibility open for both scenarios.
As a sixth “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie is still in development, stars from the franchise have expressed their thoughts about future appearances. Keira Knightley, who portrayed Elizabeth Swan in four movies, has chosen to step away from the franchise as she dedicates her time to raising her children. Conversely, Orlando Bloom, who played Will Turner, suggests it would be enjoyable to reunite with his fellow cast members once more after such a long time.
Bruckheimer has stated that the upcoming “Pirates of the Caribbean” film is a reboot, which suggests that Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley might not be part of the cast. However, the question about Depp remains. It’s challenging to envision a “Pirates” movie without Captain Jack Sparrow, making Bruckheimer eager to bring the character back. His inclusion would provide Disney with a recognizable figure for promotional purposes. Even though it’s a reboot, there might still be room for Jack Sparrow. The filmmakers could opt for a strategy similar to that of Indiana Jones or James Bond movies by creating a standalone story with minimal links to previous episodes. This approach would allow the series to have a fresh start while preserving one of its defining aspects.
It’s likely that Disney and Johnny Depp are hoping to collaborate again, given the potential impact of the new Pirates of the Caribbean reboot. The studio isn’t planning just a one-off movie; they aim for this reboot to generate enough success to launch multiple sequels. Given Jack Sparrow’s popularity, it would probably increase the chances of profit if he were involved in some way. For the initial film in the relaunch, it seems fitting that Depp should have a role. Maybe he could join forces with a new gang of rogues, passing the mantle to them and allowing them to take over the franchise. Restarting Pirates of the Caribbean without its most iconic character may prove challenging. Introducing a younger cast through Jack Sparrow might be the best approach for a smooth transition.
