Hulu Surprise Drops Full Season of A Major War Drama You’ve Never Even Heard Of

In the realm of television, shows such as HBO’s “Band of Brothers” and FX’s “Showgun” have been leading the way in war dramas. However, there’s a relatively unknown series that has recently become more accessible than ever to stream. Often referred to as India’s equivalent to “Game of Thrones,” this show surprisingly didn’t make it onto Hulu’s August 2025 streaming list, but all eight episodes of its sole season became available on the platform starting Monday. Disney-owned Hulu has been consistently updating its library of TV shows and movies throughout the month, with new titles being added daily.

The show under discussion is “The Empire,” a historical Indian drama that delves into the rise and fall of the Mughal Empire. Originating from the mind of Nikkhil Advani and inspired by Alex Rutherford’s novel series, “Empire of the Moghul,” this series revolves around 14-year-old Babur (played by Kunal Kapoor). Amidst a web of manipulative courtiers, ministers, and a deceased king, he rises to his destiny, leaving an enduring imprint on history. The narrative follows Babur’s life from adolescence to his demise in India. On Monday, all eight episodes of “The Empire” became available on Hulu’s streaming platform, approximately four years after its initial release on Disney+ Hotstar in India.

The Empire has often been underestimated within the war drama genre. However, its exploration of intricate power dynamics within royal circles, stunning costume and production designs, and exceptional cinematography have earned it comparisons to acclaimed series such as “Game of Thrones”.

The Empire didn’t receive entirely positive reviews, however. In India, there were protests against Hotstar after the premiere of the series, due to concerns that it glorified King Babur, a historically contentious figure. Critics also criticized the acting and dialogue, as well as the similarities between certain characters, plots, and even scenes to Game of Thrones and other productions. Navin Noronah from Vice even wrote that the series “boasts plotlines strikingly similar to Game of Thrones, along with shot-for-shot replicas of several famous scenes from the HBO show.

To summarize, “The Empire” received a rating of 4.7 out of 10 stars on IMDb. This TV show was broadcasted for just one season and can currently be streamed on Hulu within the United States.
