In just a short span of the closed beta testing period for REMATCH, I realized that I would become deeply engaged with it. I splurged £29.99 ($39.99) to secure three days of early access to this game, which is often referred to as “Rocket League without cars,” ahead of its official release in June. While describing it as five-a-side football might seem a bit goofy, it’s the most straightforward approach I found to explain this streamlined version of soccer, and you’ll understand once you witness it in action.
Originating from a compact team at Sloclap, the innovative developers responsible for the captivating cinematic beat-em-up game Sifu and an earlier martial arts-themed online fighter named Absolver, REMATCH emerged. Although multiplayer networking wasn’t entirely foreign to them, introducing Rematch on Xbox and PC Game Pass significantly boosted its visibility and popularity.
Despite sharing a common base with its predecessor Rocket League, REMATCH has been gradually losing steam, noticeable in both its decreasing player base and community standing. While it’s important to acknowledge the game is still in its initial season, there are concerning patterns and an absence of key features on the roadmap that seem too far off. The development team deserves some leeway as this is essentially the prelude to future developments, but these early stages have raised some questionable trends.
I prefer to avoid jumping on the negative bandwagon about games, especially those that seem to lose popularity after a peak. While it’s true that social media and livestreaming can impact indie games during their initial release, what truly matters is whether developers can convert this initial hype into long-term success.
It became apparent that my apprehensions increased when REMATCH hastily entered into collaborations with high-end cosmetic brands for in-game costumes tied to real-world players, sold as premium extras through microtransactions. Indeed, the announcement of “Ronaldinho joining REMATCH” was a genuine occurrence even before the game had fully transitioned out of its beta phase, requiring approximately $9.99 for the smallest amount of in-game currency to acquire him.
While the core mechanics are quite engaging, it seems that the game could have benefited from an additional year of polishing. Numerous elements within the game appear underdeveloped or malfunctioning, suggesting a need for further refinement.

On the contrary, servers do come with a cost – notably for worldwide servers – and their quality may differ based on your location. This point is often raised due to infrastructure concerns, particularly in South America and elsewhere, regarding REMATCH. However, it’s unrealistic to assume that Sloclap would pay its developers without actual funds. The game seems to lack the polished fundamental mechanics needed for a successful launch, complete with high-profile appearances.
It’s clear that I’m not hallucinating since the same issues are evident in the latest reviews for REMATCH on Steam. My goalkeeper saves are frequently overshadowed by an opposing striker performing acrobatic volleys, which seems unfair to many players. Users often express their frustration with a touch of exaggeration, stating something like, “It feels like I’m playing on a local server in a school basement.

Despite being one of many contenders for my favorite game of the year, it remains at the top, and I’ve already had some moments that I won’t forget. Regardless of the time spent searching for a game or the continuous decline in daily peak players, I plan to keep playing.
gladly, this week, I’ve been privy to a behind-the-scenes peek from the developers as they launched their ‘mini dev update’ series. This series acknowledges and attempts to resolve some persistent issues within our community, such as malfunctioning achievements. However, the most eagerly anticipated feature continues to be under development.
In a new bi-weekly series titled “Mini Development Updates”, we’ve published our first post on August 12, 2025. Our aim is to keep you informed about our ongoing development projects. This installment includes updates regarding crossplay, matchmaking, the forthcoming Beta server, and other exciting details. Delve into the article for further insights…
Although it probably presents a significant organizational challenge, the absence of crossplay compatibility among players across different platforms (consoles as well as PC users via both Steam and PC Game Pass) is currently a topic causing much debate within the gaming community. This is because the Steam userbase represents just one fraction of the game’s overall player base, with many more individuals playing on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC Game Pass.
In simpler terms, after experiencing heated disputes over movement exploits, ball glitches that avoid collisions, and unpleasant teammates you often encounter in public matches, Sloclap is now actively addressing a key issue with more frequent, concise updates about its progress. Although it’s not yet released, the developers have begun to communicate more openly about this much-anticipated feature.
We’re thrilled to announce that the crossplay development process is progressing efficiently, marking the stage of our project requiring the most time investment!

The new update suggests they are now concentrating on fine-tuning and bug-squashing, with a particular emphasis on enhancing social aspects. However, delve into the chaotic conversation threads on X, and you’ll find that some players express skepticism, especially concerning the bug fixing aspect – quite understandably so.
I’m not a programmer, and I’m certainly not an expert coder. Crossplay, which might have more complexities than simply knowing where player X is currently located, seems like the most significant oversight in REMATCH since it exited beta and became widely available. There are individuals within my circle who prefer to play games exclusively on PlayStation and would like to team up with me on Steam, but I’m still uncertain about how to help them do so.
Currently, people’s focus periods are at an all-time minimum, and as the Battlefield 6 Open Beta concludes, I find myself eagerly anticipating my next source of dopamine. I’m hopeful that REMATCH experiences a revival when (or if) crossplay is introduced. Let’s see what unfolds in the game world!
