Are your games using up all the space on your hard drive? You’re not alone! It can indeed be an issue when you have too many action-packed shooter games installed on your hard drive as they consume a lot of storage space. In time, you might find yourself in a tough spot, having to choose which games to keep and which to remove. For instance, the release of Marvel Rivals made quite an impact, causing many players to uninstall Overwatch 2 since they are somewhat alike. However, I’ve recently reinstalled it, and I must admit I’m enjoying this multiplayer shooter more than ever!
If you’re one of the players who stopped playing Overwatch years ago, much like myself, I believe revisiting Overwatch 2 could be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. Here’s my take on why diving back in might be worth your time.
1) More Content Than Ever

Refreshingly speaking, one compelling reason for revisiting Overwatch 2 is the abundance of fresh content it now offers. If you last played the game, you might find yourself delighted, just as I did, by a wealth of new characters and outfits at your disposal. Notably, the return of loot boxes has made acquiring skins more accessible (more details forthcoming).
Furthermore, there’s an exciting competitive mode dubbed “Stadium” that significantly alters the gaming experience. In this mode, your team competes in a thrilling “best of seven” series, earning coins that enable you to enhance your character. These enhancements modify individual character interactions in captivating ways (are you prepared for Mercy transforming into the deadliest damage-per-second threat?). You might even yearn for these improvements to be applicable to regular multiplayer. Although this feature may not entirely compensate for the game’s lack of substantial PvE content, Stadium still offers a compelling reason to revisit this game.
2) The Return of 6v6

Many fans of Overwatch found themselves uninstalling the sequel almost immediately due to a significant shift in gameplay style. Instead of the original 6vs6 team battles, Overwatch 2 opted for 5vs5 matches, aiming to promote quicker and more aggressive encounters by having only one tank per team. However, this change seemed to disrupt the familiar atmosphere of the game we cherished. To add salt to the wound, Marvel Rivals presented a 6vs6 multiplayer option, which became a major draw for Overwatch players making the switch to the new trendy game.
Upon reinstalling “Overwatch 2”, I was delighted to find that the game has brought back the 6v6 multiplayer mode. Interestingly, it’s still possible to engage in 5v5 games as well. This update provides a delightful balance: players who enjoy the new format can continue with five-member teams, while those partial to the original “Overwatch” can immerse themselves once more in the six-member mayhem. In my case, I mostly opt for the 6v6 mode these days, but being the casual gamer that I am, I steer clear of competitive modes altogether.
3) Perks Give You Options

Upon resuming play with Overwatch 2, I found myself perplexed when the game prompted me to choose a Special Ability for my characters. “What on earth are Special Abilities?” I pondered, amidst rounds of dismal D.Va performance. The explanation was surprisingly straightforward: these are modifications you can apply during the game to alter the way your character behaves.
As a dedicated gamer, diving into the game, I’ve noticed that initially, the perks presented to me were minor yet impactful, such as enhancing D.Va’s Boost abilities. However, as time progressed, I encountered more significant boosts that truly made a difference, like Torbjorn’s ability to affix his turrets to ceilings and walls. These perks consistently managed to find the perfect balance, allowing me to tweak my character on the fly without altering the essence of who I was controlling, keeping the charm and fun intact.
4) Hero Bans Equal Hero Balance

Previously, I shared that I don’t engage much in competitive Overwatch 2 due to lack of extensive experience. Recently, a new system called Hero Bans has been introduced, but my friends who are more into competitive play seem to be excited about it. Essentially, every player gets to choose heroes they feel should be banned from the game. If enough players agree on a hero, it gets removed from the match, resulting in a game without that particular character.
Undeniably, this feature can present both advantages and disadvantages. Many players feel frustrated when their preferred heroes are suspended. On the other hand, it gives users the opportunity to establish more equitable matches by prohibiting overpowered characters. It also provides Blizzard with valuable data about the most frequently banned heroes, enabling them to refine character traits in future updates. Consequently, this leads to a more balanced gaming experience, which is welcome news for those who stopped playing Overwatch 2 due to feeling that some characters were unbeatable.
5) Overwatch 2 Favors Aggressive Gameplay

As a confessed casual gamer, let me share another personal confession: I’m one of those enthusiastic, yet messy players. The thrill and excitement of charging into the fray is what attracts me the most when it comes to gaming, which is why D.Va has always been my go-to hero. Instead of being the cautious tank that safely escorts my teammates to victory, I prefer to jump in and wreak as much havoc as I can. This impulsive playstyle is probably why I appreciate Blizzard’s decision to have all heroes automatically regenerate health during gameplay – it allows me to keep pushing forward without worrying too much about getting hurt!
Minor healing is all that’s required, so healers like Mercy are still essential for keeping you and your team alive during tough situations. However, I’ve discovered that the passive healing promotes the aggressive playstyle I enjoy because if you manage to survive a close call, your health instantly begins to regenerate. In my humble opinion, this change in the game has achieved what the shift to 5v5 was intended to: it encourages fast-paced, intense, and enjoyable matches instead of everyone hiding behind a tank.
6) The Return of the Loot Box

As an old-school gamer, I take a peculiar sense of satisfaction in avoiding additional costs for items such as Battle Passes or skins. Sure, I’m all for shelling out for substantial DLC that enhances the gameplay experience, but spending extra cash on mere cosmetic advantages isn’t really my thing. That’s why the original Overwatch appealed to me so much; instead of having to pay for Loot Boxes, I could earn them by playing the game, thus building up a swanky collection of cosmetics without dipping into my wallet. And like many seasoned players, I was disappointed when Overwatch 2 abandoned the free Loot Boxes, making awesome new skins inaccessible to frugal gamers like myself.
I was thrilled to discover that Blizzard has reintroduced free Loot Boxes in Overwatch 2. Through gameplay, you can collect standard boxes, and one exceptional Loot Box via the free Battle Pass. To sweeten the deal, you’re assured of receiving valuable items, with at least one Rare item in every standard box and a guaranteed Epic item within five boxes. Furthermore, there’s a promise of a legendary item within 20 boxes.
As a dedicated gamer here, I’ve found myself racking up those in-game boxes after countless hours of gameplay. However, the latest update has made it so that even though I’m gaming for the love of it (who isn’t?), there’s this consistent flow of exciting new skins and items coming my way, all without breaking the bank!
7) Map Voting Is Weirdly Exciting

Upon re-entering the realm of Overwatch 2, I encountered yet another delightful feature – map selection via voting. Rather than being stuck with the map chosen for you, you’re now presented with three distinct options to choose from. The twist is that each player gets a say in this decision. However, it doesn’t go to the map with the most votes; instead, the game rotates through each choice, moving like a horizontal wheel from left to right, ultimately determining the battlefield based on where it stops.
Occasionally, this mechanism might cause a bit of frustration, such as when it selects a map that was preferred by just one player. After experimenting with this novel system, however, I discovered an unexpected sense of thrill in the entire map selection procedure. This could be due to my extensive exposure to _The Price Is Right_ growing up, but I always look forward to seeing where this virtual wheel stops. It’s even fun sometimes when it lands on a map that only I voted for!
8) More Personality Than Any Other Hero Shooter

The principal motivation for me to reinstall Overwatch 2 stands on a subjective basis, however, allow me to elaborate: it retains a greater degree of character and charm compared to other team-based shooter games, even Marvel Rivals. While I’m an ardent admirer of the Marvel Universe, and consistently play Marvel Snap whenever I grab my phone, I must confess that the personality in Marvel Rivals primarily stems from existing media sources. My preferred character, Rocket Raccoon, boasts a fun appearance and catchy voice lines, yet his unique persona is relatively limited beyond these aspects. Most players are drawn to him predominantly due to their affection for his depiction in the Guardians of the Galaxy films.
Blizzard should be given credit for independently creating an exhilarating universe of their own, without having access to numerous comic books or a pre-existing cinematic universe like Marvel to captivate the Overwatch fanbase. Instead, they crafted these characters from scratch and they are all quite engaging. As a fan myself, I find the evolution of characters such as D.Va, Mei, and Ashe over time to be particularly immersive, making playing them in the game more emotionally satisfying than simply enjoying characters like Captain America due to Chris Evans’ portrayal in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
A single personality doesn’t guarantee a fantastic game. However, Overwatch 2 excels with its vibrant personality combined with diverse gameplay modes, free skins, and engaging features like Perks, making it my preferred choice in hero shooters. Give it another try, and you might share the same enthusiasm!
