Currently, body horror is experiencing a surge in popularity – significantly boosted by the phenomenal success of last year’s film “The Substance” – and this week, another addition to this genre has hit theaters in the United Kingdom.
In a new directorial venture by Michael Shanks, we find the on-screen pairing of real-life spouses Dave Franco and Alison Brie. They take on roles as a couple navigating a tricky, complex phase within their relationship. The duo also contribute to the production of this intriguing film.
After relocating to a rural area, the couple encounters various peculiar problems, one of the most striking being their frequent inability to separate physically – with the situations becoming progressively intense.
The movie premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival in January, and it hit theaters in the U.S. during the summer. Now, it has arrived for viewing over here across the Atlantic.
If you’ve watched the movie and are curious about the unusual climax, keep reading for an analysis of the enigmatic finale in ‘Together’.
Together ending explained: What happens to Tim and Millie?
It seems that the peculiar issue Tim and Millie are facing can be linked to an incident during a hike they went on not long after moving into their new residence.
During their camping trip in a cave, Tim and Millie unknowingly come into contact for the first time, bonded at the legs while drinking from a pool. Initially taken aback by this unusual incident, they initially attribute it to mold or some other natural occurrence. However, over time, Tim finds himself mysteriously drawn towards Millie.
At this point, Millie has been making acquaintance with one of her fellow teachers at the school she recently joined – Mr. McCabe – and it’s interesting to note that he lives nearby as well. Over time, Mr. McCabe shares with them that the location where they camped was once home to a New Age church. Regrettably, this church collapsed over time.
As Tim’s strange encounters grow increasingly intense, he accidentally misses his train back to the city and instead ends up at Millie’s school. There, they find themselves engaging in an impassioned love-making session within a bathroom stall.
In this tense situation, there’s a problem that escalates: following the incident, their private parts become entangled, causing them distress as they attempt to disentangle themselves. Meanwhile, a student from the school and Mr. McCabe stumble upon the bathroom, baffled by the unfolding scenario.
As I pen down my thoughts post the screening, I find myself compelled to delve deeper into an unexpected conversation from the film. The narrative takes a poignant turn when Millie, laden with apologies, pays an unplanned visit to Mr. McCabe’s residence. However, rather than accepting her remorse, he appears unfazed by the incident and instead leads us on an introspective journey into his personal life.
What ensues is a profound exploration of his relationship with a partner who, from all appearances, is no longer among the living. To add layers of complexity to this intriguing tale, Mr. McCabe draws upon Ancient Greek philosophy, asserting that true human completeness can only be attained when one has found a meaningful connection with another soul. This revelation not only adds depth to the character but also serves as a poignant reminder of the profound impact relationships can have on our lives.

Tim’s efforts to find medical assistance for his uncommon issues didn’t lead to many successes, however, he starts investigating a local pair – Simon and Keri – who mysteriously vanished at the very same cave where he and Millie had been earlier.
Initially, I found myself brushing off Tim’s idea of a connection between us. However, that very night, something extraordinary happened – we were inexplicably drawn closer than ever before. In an attempt to halt the intense emotions flooding through us, we resorted to taking muscle relaxant pills that Tim had been prescribed by his doctor. We hoped this would help us regain some sense of control and prevent ourselves from becoming one entity altogether.
Upon waking, Millie cuts the tethering material and plans to transport them to the hospital. However, before setting off, she needs to retrieve her keys from Mr McCabe’s residence where she had stored them earlier. Meanwhile, Tim chooses to revisit the cave for a closer inspection.
Then things take an unsettling turn: Upon reaching the cave, Tim encounters Simon and Keri, but they’re mysteriously joined as one grotesque figure. At the same time, Millie stumbles upon Mr. McCabe’s residence, where a wedding video is playing, depicting a ceremony that doesn’t feature Mr. McCabe among the two grooms.
In this rephrased version, the scenario unfolds as follows: She consistently watches, and eventually, the recording progresses to a ceremony depicting the merging of two men, culminating in their transformation into Mr. McCabe. He subsequently enters the room and clarifies that this fusion is what he represents – a combined essence of both individuals. He further proposes that they are now better off as one entity, implying that Millie might consider merging with Tim. However, Millie rejects his suggestion, prompting him to savagely wound her arm.
After being severely injured, she fled and eventually found herself back at their driveway with Tim. Together, they realized that the dreadful scene Tim had encountered involving Simon and Keri was due to their resistance against the fusion process. Consequently, they vowed not to repeat the same error.
Following an initial warning that he might take his own life, Tim subsequently bonded his arm with Millie’s wounded arm, setting the stage for this transformation. As they ventured indoors, they played The Spice Girls song “2 Become 1” on a record player and indulged in a slow dance while preparing to merge into a single being.
Later on, we jump ahead to the ensuing weekend, during which Millie’s parents show up at their residence and rap on the door. Upon opening, only a single figure is visible behind it – an individual exhibiting characteristics of both Tim and Millie, suggesting a successful blending or fusion.
What does Together mean?
Regardless of whether you perceive Together as romantic, unsettling, or a mix of both, it mostly relies on your personal perspective and feelings about partnerships and romance.
An optimistic individual could argue that the movie’s conclusion portrays a joyful reunion between Tim and Millie, indicating they’ve overcome their romantic issues and are now deeply connected, content in their relationship, even willing to forego other aspects of their lives for their shared happiness.
Another perspective could be that it might serve as a critique on codependency in relationships. This suggests a situation where individuals may unknowingly compromise their personal identity and individuality, ultimately morphing into someone who isn’t entirely authentic to themselves.
In a recent chat with USA Today, director Michael Shanks shared his thoughts on the film, saying, “It’s got a touch of romance and melancholy, but there’s also a dash of humor and grit to it.
One delight of the movie lies in its versatility – it embodies multiple aspects simultaneously, inviting each viewer to make their own unique interpretation about whether the convergence is an uplifting moment or a terrifying event.
