Olivia Rodrigo and Conan Gray don’t mean to be traitors to one another.
Admittedly, the Grammy-winning artist, known for their hit “Heather,” confessed that they each held back some of their top singles from being released due to their relationship.
According to what Olivia shared with Interview magazine during their joint interview on August 15, they occasionally offer each other less-than-helpful advice regarding samples.
In a reminiscence, the 22-year-old mentioned, “On Superache, they played ‘Memories’ for me. It ended up being the most popular track from the album.
Olivia mentioned that everyone seemed to enjoy it. When I first heard it, I thought something along the lines of, ‘I believe your songs are superior’.
Yet, she disclosed that even though there was absolutely no malicious intention, Conan unintentionally emulated a similar action towards her when she launched her 2023 sophomore album.
She said, “When I made you listen to ‘Guts’, which is actually ‘Vampire’, I thought it was great.” But he responded, “It’s not suitable as the first single.
And Conan fessed up to that reaction, quipping, “I was like, ‘It’s OK.'”
As a devoted admirer, I’d say, “You know, we often miss the wood for the trees when it comes to each other’s music. Being so immersed in our own creations, we sometimes overlook their true beauty.
One person who isn’t too close to know when she hears a hit? Olivia’s mom, Jennifer Rodrigo.
“You know who was always rooting for ‘Vodka Cranberry’?” Conan asked Olivia. “Your mom.”
Indeed, Olivia shared that loving Conan’s artistry is a family affair.
My mom is a big fan of Conan, she highlighted. In fact, the entire family travels quite a distance to watch him perform live.
Conan and Olivia’s friendship has a long history. They grew particularly close while working together under producer Dan Nigro. Interestingly, Conan initially met the Grammy-winning artist online during her time on the set of “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.
Conan mentioned on Today in June 2022 that he reached out to someone due to remembering an old song she wrote titled ‘All I Want’. He went on to say that this song had been one of his favorites for quite some time.
After that point, the duo has made significant progress, standing by each other while creating new tunes and performing live on tours.
In the same month, Conan expressed to Rolling Stone that it’s pleasant to have companions who you can rely upon. Fame can be perplexing, and it’s reassuring to have individuals with whom you can connect and find solace.
