James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, has shared that Warner Bros. is gearing up for a significant move in the gaming industry, despite some challenges in their current gaming divisions. He stressed that this ambitious project will unfold over time. In a chat with GamesRadar, Gunn discussed the future plans for DC Studios and his strategy to broaden the DC universe across video games.
During the interview, Gunn hinted at upcoming DC titles with a smaller scope, possibly including games such as the newly announced LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. However, he also mentioned that there are larger projects in development as well.
Gunn mentioned that there’s been a bit of progress on various fronts. We’ve got a few small DC games in the pipeline. Additionally, we’ve been discussing more significant projects, which are still in the early planning stages. One project I’m particularly eager for, although it requires time, is underway. Recently, there have been some shifts within Warner Bros. Games, and we’re currently working with new personnel.
Gunn may be hinting at a complex endeavor, encompassing not just game development but also business aspects such as securing appropriate pitches and selecting suitable studios for a specific type of game. Regarding Warner Bros. Games’ future plans, one can speculate that they might steer clear of ventures like the controversial live-service games, such as Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.
Previously, both Gunn and his co-CEO, Peter Safran, have expressed a similar sentiment: they acknowledged that larger games set within the DC universe require ample time for development, meaning fans may need to wait a while longer before they can enjoy the next major game.
Back in February, as a dedicated fan, I recall Gunn expressing that we’re still in the initial phases of project design. We engage in discussions about these concepts. When they share their ideas for the story, we offer suggestions like, “Perhaps you might consider this direction because we’ve got something intriguing brewing with this character and more.” This way, we contribute to shaping the creative process.
In May, Warner Bros.’ gaming division reported a significant drop in revenue of approximately 48 percent, according to their quarterly earnings report. This decline might be linked to the commercial flops of games such as “MultiVersus” and “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League”. However, titles like “Mortal Kombat 1” and “Hogwarts Legacy” continued to perform well. It’s important to mention that these revenue statistics represent a three-month span concluding on March 31, 2025.
It appears that the gaming sector within Warner Bros. has encountered some challenges recently. In January, David Haddad, who served as the president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, announced his decision to step down from his position.
In July, there were indications suggesting that Warner Bros. could be developing a fresh live-service game within the DC Comics universe. However, specifics about this project have been somewhat elusive so far.
