The upcoming movie “Thunderbolts” is set to premiere on Disney+, and it appears that Marvel Studios may be learning from past mistakes. Despite garnering positive reviews and boasting an impressive cast including Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Sebastian Stan, among others, “Thunderbolts” failed at the box office. With a worldwide gross of only $382 million, “Thunderbolts” became one of the MCU’s 10 lowest-earning films, surpassing “Black Widow” but falling short of “Eternals.” Since then, the anti-hero ensemble has become available for digital and physical purchase, making Disney+ its final destination.
Marvel Studios has officially announced that the much-anticipated series, Thunderbolts, will start streaming on Disney+ on Wednesday, August 27, about three months after its theater release on May 1. This is in line with a pattern of more than 100 days between a film’s theatrical launch and its debut on the streaming platform.
As a devoted Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) aficionado, I’ve grown accustomed to the delightful rhythm of enjoying new movies on Disney+ approximately every three months or so. However, my patience was recently tested when the wait for “Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania” stretched out significantly longer than usual, initially hovering around two months before extending even further.
It seems that the streaming releases of shows like Deadpool & Wolverine, Captain America: Brand New World, and most recently Thunderbolts have been delayed by more than 100 days. Among these, the latest release has had the longest wait in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with a delay of 118 days.
- Black Widow – 89 days (Free with Subscription)
- Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings – 70 days
- Eternals – 68 days
- Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – 47 days
- Thor: Love and Thunder – 62 days
- Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – 82 days
- Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania – 89 days
- Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – 89 days
- The Marvels – 89 days
- Deadpool & Wolverine – 109 days
- Captain America: Brave New World – 104 days
- Thunderbolts* – 118 days
Previously, Marvel Studios faced criticism for releasing their streaming content too quickly, which some believed led to certain box office underperformances. However, it seems they are now keen on correcting this issue, striving for improvements instead.
Why Marvel Studios Needed to Delay Its Disney+ Releases
By delaying the release of Disney+ content, Marvel Studios is emphasizing that their movies should be experienced as grand theatrical events once more. It’s because the sheer scale and excitement of a Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster is best felt when seen for the first time on a large screen.
Due to an increase in theater ticket and snack bar prices, a lot of people have chosen to wait for Marvel Studios’ latest films to become available at home instead. Consequently, this trend has negatively impacted the box office, with the Marvel Cinematic Universe experiencing multiple flops during the Multiverse Saga. It’s possible that these early streaming debuts contribute to some degree to these box office failures.
It’s important to note that Disney+ isn’t the sole factor affecting the MCU’s box office performance. The Multiverse Saga has also encountered significant criticism and pushback, leading some to speculate that audiences might be growing tired of superhero films following the underperformance of movies like Captain America 4, Thunderbolts, and The Fantastic Four at the box office.
