It’s been confirmed that BioShock 4 is in the works, but it seems to be facing some challenges, much like other anticipated sequels that didn’t ultimately materialize. A job posting from 2024 hinted at the game’s ongoing development, yet it’s currently stuck in a state known as “development hell,” which isn’t a positive sign. Reports suggest that the game recently underwent an internal review by 2K Games and didn’t pass, leading to management changes aimed at getting the project back on track. There have been rumors about problems with the storyline, particularly its narrative. Regarding the game’s setting, since the first two were based in Rapture, an underwater city, and BioShock Infinite featured the floating city of Columbia, it’s possible that BioShock 4 might introduce a new, unique location.
In the subsequent location, it should share characteristics of isolation and uniqueness, much like the current one. When Cloud Chamber eventually gets BioShock 4 up and running, they will have six distinct options to consider.
1) Antarctica
For quite some time now, there has been a persistent speculation that the setting for BioShock 4 could be situated in Antarctica, and it certainly seems plausible given certain factors. Just like Rapture was hidden beneath the ocean, making it inaccessible to most, Columbia too was hard to reach. Antarctica, with its extreme conditions and limited life forms, might be even more isolated than these two locations, adding an extra layer of mystery. Moreover, such a setting would align well with some of the environmental themes prevalent in the initial BioShock games. Furthermore, the intrigue surrounding how a city could have been established in one of the world’s most inhospitable environments makes this theory even more compelling.
2) Jungle
Although a jungle may not be isolated since it lies on land accessible to many, there exist profoundly dense jungles. Consider a city concealed by a thick veil of jungle foliage, trees, and other vegetation. Such a strategy would prove quite astute, especially if the city’s existence remained undisclosed. This clandestine setup would foster more opportunities for environmental research, focusing on deforestation impacts. Additionally, it would provide stunning vistas for the eyes to behold.
3) Aboveground Dome
The submerged city, Rapture, encountered significant issues. Fissures appeared early on in the first game, causing many areas to become submerged. Locating it where water could potentially annihilate everything was a daring decision, but constructing an above-ground dome, isolated from the outside world, seems more practical and logical. This would also be beneficial from a narrative standpoint since if underwater Rapture failed, a logical next step might be to attempt an above-ground version of it.
4) Underwater
It’s possible that the next installment of the BioShock series, BioShock 4 , could revolve around the rejuvenation of Rapture, even with the passing of Andrew Ryan and Dr. Sofia Lamb. Given the presence of numerous eccentric wealthy individuals, it’s plausible that some might be eager to finance its reconstruction. From a storytelling perspective, this route would make sequel creation simpler, and given the affection gamers have for Rapture, it could be a smart decision, albeit a predictable one. After all, BioShock Infinite sparked some debate with its departure from Rapture, so bringing players back to their beloved underwater city could appease critics.
5) Underground
Imagine if BioShock 4 were set beneath the surface, away from the dangerous waters that constantly threaten to burst everything apart. Instead, it could be located within a vast network of caverns, housing the fictional, secluded city for the wealthy. Think of it like when you and your friends decide to construct your Minecraft bases within a cave or ravine, but on a grander scale – imagine eccentric rich people instead of just us, with a level of complexity that far surpasses what we can build in Minecraft. It would be fascinating to see the creativity of the developers brought to life underground.
6) Outer Space
As a devoted fan, I’ve always wondered about the possibilities of exploring new frontiers within the BioShock universe. While the first two games were set deep beneath the ocean, BioShock Infinite took us on an uplifting journey into the skies. But what if the series didn’t stop there? What if it ventured further, into the vast expanse of outer space?
This unexplored territory could perfectly align with the series’ recurring themes, especially given the growing fascination among the rich and powerful today for space travel, which comes with a hefty price tag. This provides an opportunity for some timely social criticism that could be quite intriguing.
Moreover, if BioShock’s creators could craft such compelling underwater aesthetics and atmosphere, I can only imagine the breathtaking sights and immersive experiences they could create in the infinite depths of space. It would truly be a journey out of this world!
