Black Myth: Zhong Kui Studio Wants to “Start From Scratch” Rather Than Work on Wukong DLC

As a dedicated follower eagerly anticipating Game Science’s DLC reveal for Black Myth: Wukong during Gamescom Opening Night Live, I was taken aback when the unexpected announcement of a new title, Black Myth: Zhong Kui, came along. In a recent Weibo post (translated by MP1st), CEO Feng Ji shed light on this transition, explaining it as a result of feelings of confusion, emptiness, and a sense of foreboding that led to the shift in focus to this new project.

The story began as the studio started developing additional content for the game ‘Wukong’. However, things didn’t go as planned and I found myself predominantly feeling bewildered, vacant, and a sense of foreboding (I understand it might sound overly dramatic, but please bear with me). Regardless of how embarrassed I felt about not being able to feel joyful, these feelings persisted, unexpectedly and intensely, especially when faced with questions like ‘Are you working on DLC? Which characters will be included? When will it be launched?’

Being a seasoned professional, I’m adept at suppressing my adverse emotions and motivating myself to proceed with creating the DLC, because I was certain that those requesting it were undoubtedly enthusiasts who cherish ‘Black Myth: Wukong’ and Game Science – the very fans who have propelled us forward.

Feng Ji experienced a sense of relief when studio co-founder Yang Qi proposed the idea of creating something new instead of working on the DLC, and that’s how they began working on Zhong Kui. Although it would have been a strong decision to stick with the original plan, the team seems to be favoring the concept of developing a completely new game instead.

Introducing fresh characters, innovative game mechanics, refreshed aesthetics, cutting-edge technology, and a brand-new narrative! We’re eager to innovate, push boundaries, abandon traditional structures, and begin anew.

The action RPG “Black Myth: Zhong Kui,” produced by Game Science, is currently in development for consoles and PC. However, they’ve shared that the game is still at an early stage, with very little content available yet. At this point, there’s more of an empty folder than a playable game, and they don’t have much footage to show just yet. This is another single-player title, but the developers can’t provide details on the gameplay or story as they’re still working on the initial outline. Keep an eye out for updates because it seems like we’ll be waiting a while for more information about this upcoming release.
