Star Wars’ Divisive Disney+ Series Just Got an Encouraging Season 2 Update

As a devoted Star Wars follower, I must admit that the episodic structure of this iconic franchise seems tailor-made for the small screen, especially when viewed from a unique perspective. Critics have showered praise on self-contained tales such as “The Mandalorian” and the political thriller series “Andor”, which they’ve dubbed a masterpiece. Yet, opinions among audiences have been divided over detail-rich spin-offs like “The Book of Boba Fett” and “The Acolyte”. The transformation of “Obi-Wan Kenobi”, initially planned as a film, into a six-episode Disney+ limited series, has been a fascinating journey. Subsequently, a fan edit was carried out to remove the perceived awkward pacing and unnecessary scenes, resulting in a 2.5-hour “movie”.

Despite the lack of official news, fans continue to inquire about a possible Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2 from actor Ewan McGregor. During a recent interview at Fan Expo Canada, he admitted, “I’m not privy to where they stand [on that subject].” He further added, “Even though you all seem to believe I have insider knowledge, I’m just as much in the dark about their plans as you are.

Since my wife heads off to work each day, I assume they’re producing the second season of Ahsoka. Yet, I’m unaware of their specific plans.” (Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays Hera Syndulla in this series where Hayden Christensen reprises his role as Anakin Skywalker from my Star Wars prequels.)

Ewan McGregor on Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Return

In simpler terms, during an interview, McGregor discussed whether this could be the last time he uses a lightsaber as Obi-Wan Kenobi. He suggested that possibly more stories involving Obi-Wan might be developed in the future. The first season of “Obi-Wan Kenobi” brought together McGregor and Christensen again since their last appearance together in 2005’s “Revenge of the Sith.” In this new series, Obi-Wan confronted his former apprentice, who is now Darth Vader, clad in armor, about a decade after their battle on Mustafar.

Stepping back into the role felt effortless, save for one challenge: reprising Obi-Wan’s voice after nearly two decades since ‘Revenge of the Sith’. It turned out to be quite an ordeal. Initially, it was planned as a standalone movie under another director, but circumstances led them to other projects. Fortunately, Deborah Chow stepped in, and I couldn’t have asked for a better fit. I admire her immensely and was thrilled to work with her. She helmed all the episodes of the Obi-Wan series we produced, bringing her unique vision to life.” (as a movie critic reviewing the Obi-Wan Kenobi series)

As a devoted Star Wars fan, I’m excited about McGregor mentioning Stephen Daldry’s proposed Obi-Wan movie. It’s a captivating concept that serves as both a sequel to Revenge of the Sith and a prequel to A New Hope. In this intriguing scenario, Daldry envisioned the story unfolding on Tatooine, the arid planet where the reclusive Jedi master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, would be guarding young Luke Skywalker in hiding. However, tensions between local farmers and the formidable Tusken Raiders tribe could force him out of seclusion.

Initially, the narrative primarily focused on Luke. It was undeniably me and Luke embarking on this grand adventure, as Ewan McGregor put it. But somehow, at an uncertain stage, the tale evolved into being about Obi-Wan and Leia. I found that move to be incredibly smart and unforeseen.

In the show titled “Obi-Wan“, Luke doesn’t have a significant role. Instead, it focuses on a space expedition led by Obi-Wan to save Princess Leia Organa, who is Luke’s twin sister and portrayed by Vivien Lyra Blair in this series. The Empire, along with the Grand Inquisitor (Rupert Friend) and a relentless character named Reva (Moses Ingram, portraying Third Sister), are pursuing them throughout their journey.
