A captivating sneak peek of the upcoming movie “Hamnet,” directed by Chloé Zhao, was recently unveiled, offering a glimpse of what’s to come when it arrives in UK cinemas next January.
Additionally, it offers a sneak peek of Joe Alwyn from The Brutalist, playing a role in the film. He appears together with leading actors Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal in the trailer.
In the upcoming movie, Alwyn has been cast as Bartholomew, while Mescal, known for roles in Normal People and Gladiator II, portrays a sorrowful William Shakespeare, and Buckley, famous for Wicked Little Letters and The Lost Daughter, plays his wife Agnes.
In simple terms, the movie preview is nearly as moving and emotional as some of Shakespeare’s plays, offering a peek into the deep sorrow experienced by the characters after losing their 11-year-old child.
As a cinema enthusiast, I found myself captivated by the clever weaving of scenes. Montages showing him, Agnes, dancing seamlessly transitioned into snippets of Alwyn and Mescal’s performances at The Globe Theatre. These visuals offered a broad perspective into their lives, both before and after the fateful event. They skillfully depicted how Shakespeare molded this sorrowful tale into timeless art, thereby crafting Hamlet, a work that stands as one of his most iconic masterpieces.

The film was adapted from Maggie O’Farrell’s 2020 book with the same title. Renowned Oscar-winning screenwriter and director Zhao collaborated on the script with the author and is also involved in production duties.
In terms of production, she will be working alongside esteemed directors such as Steven Spielberg, Sam Mendes, Liza Marshall, Pippa Harris, Nicolas Gonda, Kristie Macosko Krieger, and Laurie Borg.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m no stranger to the captivating works of Chloé Zhao, particularly her independent cinema pieces. However, what caught my attention recently was her 2021 project, “Eternals”. This was an exciting departure for Zhao as it marked her debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Unfortunately, this film’s reception among fans wasn’t as enthusiastic as I had hoped.
Hamnet marks Zhao’s return to the big screen four years on.
In 2020, the book was awarded the Women’s Prize for Fiction. It is often referred to as a novel that draws inspiration from the life of a well-known playwright’s son.
As a cinephile diving into this novel’s summary, I find myself captivated by its intriguing tale. It revolves around the profound connection between twins and a marriage hanging precariously on grief’s edge. The narrative also weaves in the story of a kestrel and her master, a flea that embarks on an extraordinary sea voyage from Alexandria, and a glovemaker’s son who courageously defies societal norms in his ardent pursuit of love. Ultimately, it offers a poignant and indelible reinterpretation of a boy whose existence was almost erased from history, yet his name echoes through one of the most renowned plays ever penned.
Currently, it’s unclear how closely the movie will follow the original text, but going by its summary, the film is said to narrate a potent love story that served as the inspiration for the enduring classic, William Shakespeare’s play, Hamlet.
