Hollywood is mourning the loss of one of their own.
Actress Verónica Echegui, recognized for her portrayal of Marta in Apple TV+’s “Love You to Death,” passed away on August 24 at Madrid’s 12 de Octubre University Hospital after a battle with cancer. She was 42 years old, as reported by Variety.
The actress from Spain began her career in 2006 when Spanish director Bigas Luna chose her for the role in “My Name is Juani.” Although the film received a mix of positive and negative reviews initially, Echegui earned her first nomination by the Spanish Academy for her exceptional acting performance.
After those years, she was also nominated for her performances in the films “My Prison Yard” (2009), “Katmandu” (2012), and “My Heart Goes Boom” (2022). Additionally, she won the Best Fiction Short Film award for her directorial debut, “Tótem Loba“, in 2022.
In the time that followed, she was given nominations for her acting roles in “My Prison Yard” (2009), “Katmandu” (2012), and “My Heart Goes Boom” (2022). Furthermore, she took home the Best Fiction Short Film award for her directorial debut of “Tótem Loba” in 2022.

Following the sad announcement of her demise, friends and professional associates, including Spanish actor Antonio Banderas, shared their grief on various social media platforms.
Today, Spanish cinema is deeply saddened by the passing of Veronica Echegui. This is what I’ve posted on Instagram, accompanying a picture of her. My heartfelt sympathies.
Simultaneously, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez of Spain pondered over the enduring influence that Echegui’s work had left behind.
He expressed profound shock upon learning about Verónica Echegui’s death. On platform X, he praised her as a highly-talented and humble actress whose life was cut tragically short.
In 2009, the actress secured a part in the independent comedy film “Bunny and the Bull” featuring Noel Fielding, known for hosting The Great British Baking Show. However, it wasn’t until three years later that she made her debut in her first significant American production.
In my role as a devoted fan, I can’t help but reflect on a significant moment in my “filmography” – portraying Lucia Caldera, the receptionist, in “The Cold Light of Day”. This film was an extraordinary experience, sharing the screen with cinematic legends like Bruce Willis, Sigourney Weaver, and Henry Cavill.
In the following years, I found myself stepping into the role of a translator in the captivating romantic comedy series “Book of Love,” streaming on Prime Video. Sharing the screen with the talented Sam Claflin, who portrayed a charming British novelist, was an unforgettable experience that added another layer to my career as a lifestyle expert and actress.
Moreover, the actor from “Me Before You” expressed a heartfelt tribute of his own, reminiscing about their shared past.
On social media, he expressed his deep sorrow upon learning about Veronica Echegui’s news. He angrily exclaimed, ‘Cancer, I curse you!'”
“He vented his distress over the news of Veronica Echegui on social media with a blunt statement, ‘Damn you, cancer!’
