On August 26, Helldivers 2, a highly praised third-person cooperative shooter by Arrowhead Game Studios, made its long-awaited debut on Xbox platforms. This marked a significant milestone not only for Xbox Series X|S gamers but also for the game’s broader community, as it supported crossplay with other platforms.
The exciting arrival of the title featured a unique collaboration between Helldivers 2 and Halo ODST Warbond, complete with authentic Halo 3: ODST gear seamlessly integrated into the game. Moreover,
Due to two significant reasons – firstly, Helldivers 2 being an acclaimed action game that Xbox gamers have been eagerly waiting for since its launch last year; secondly, the game itself being highly praised – anticipation for the port was incredibly high prior to its launch. Given this, it’s not surprising at all that it’s been a massive hit following its release on Tuesday.
According to discussions on the Helldivers 2 subreddit regarding its player count tracker, it appears that approximately 380,000 to 420,000 people played the game during peak hours on its Xbox launch day. SteamDB indicates that only around 167,795 of those players were on PC. This implies that the remaining 200,000 to 250,000 players were actively engaging with the game on consoles, suggesting a significant number of them were Xbox users.
The good old days… from r/Helldivers
This turnout was truly immense, so much so that it overloaded the servers! At its peak, an astonishing 390,000 players were engaged in galactic battles, promoting Managed Democracy. However, a sudden crash occurred, causing the player count to dramatically drop to 146,818.
I’m pleased to say that so far, major crashes like this one have been fairly uncommon across the game. Admittedly, there have been a few minor Xbox glitches popping up from time to time – nothing too unexpected for game ports these days. However, overall, Helldivers 2 appears to perform quite smoothly on Microsoft’s consoles.
In my observation, the timely support from Xbox Corps couldn’t be more apt, arriving right in the heat of a remarkable Major Order that demands an astounding 8.5 billion kills across the Terminid, Automaton, and Illuminate battlegrounds. As I’ve noticed on the community-crafted Helldivers Companion site, the growing number of players has significantly accelerated the Helldivers’ advancement.
In September 2nd, there’s an upcoming content release titled “Into the Unjust.” This content focuses primarily on the Terminids and involves our deployment to unique “hive worlds” that have been entirely transformed by the bugs.
In these scenarios, unique subterranean operations await featuring Super Earth’s elite soldiers as they plunge into battles beneath the earth, navigating through swarms of bugs to access vital targets with only scarce resources and support from the air at their disposal. Furthermore, surface missions are also planned, one of which involves players safeguarding a mobile oil rig.
New kinds of Terminid foes are set to be introduced in the game dubbed “The Unjust,” including insects capable of burrowing beneath the ground to dodge flames and shift their locations, as well as a gigantic winged Dragonroach, which is essentially a Bile Titan with avian characteristics.
The positive aspect is that we’ll receive a fresh Dust Devils Warbond two days following the release of the update on September 4. This package will include:
– A “Coyote” incendiary assault rifle for fiery combat
– A “Pineapple” cluster grenade for strategic mass impact
– An MS-11 Solo Silo fortification with long-range anti-tank capabilities and devastating accuracy
– And additional features to enhance your gaming experience.
Being an ardent admirer who’s clocked more than 500 hours on Helldivers 2, and observing its ebb and flow in popularity throughout different updates, it’s thrilling to witness the game reaching heights close to its initial pinnacles again.
The influx of Xbox gamers joining the cooperative shooter game has certainly sparked great enthusiasm, and at present, Helldivers 2 sits at the peak of Steam’s Best-Seller chart. Notably, there’s been a dramatic increase in the number of its PC players as well.
To put it another way, regardless if you’re an experienced warrior from the Galactic War or a newcomer straight out of basic training, it’s truly extraordinary to be a Helldiver right now.
The Helldivers subreddit is brimming with delightful content such as novice players encountering the game’s amusing friendly fire incidents or heartwarming crossplay exchanges between knowledgeable veterans assisting new Xbox users, and I’ve enjoyed myself immensely while perusing it all.
By the way, I’ve compiled a list of essential tips for any Xbox Helldriver just starting out – feel free to take a look if that’s where you stand!
Helldivers 2 has been launched on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC (via Steam), and PS5 for $39.99. But if you want it on PC, you can get it cheaper with a deal that drops the price to $35.09 at CDKeys.
