On any ordinary day in the grand Marvel Universe, it’s not uncommon for a hero or villain to face their end. The harsh reality is that in a universe brimming with extraordinary beings, death is an inevitable part of life. Despite the constant threats, whether they affect individuals or groups, the concept of total annihilation has always appeared far-fetched. It’s been thought there are too many powerful entities for anyone to eliminate-not just eradicate them all, but rather “snap” them away. However, that perspective is now being challenged. The new Marvel Predator series delves into this scenario, revealing that the universe’s deadliest hunters have locked their iconic three-dot sights on Marvel’s roster of super-powered characters. Their goal? To add these formidable figures to their already awe-inspiring collection of trophies.
In Benjamin Percy, Marcelo Ferreira, and Daniel Picciotto’s “Predator Takes on the Marvel Universe,” the Yautja, who are typically referred to as Predators, an extraterrestrial hunting species, have become bored with hunting ordinary humans and aggressive Xenomorphs. They now aim for more challenging targets: the superheroes and villains of the Marvel world.
Regardless of the Yautja’s deep-rooted belief in hunting and their sophisticated technology along with centuries of expertise, Marvel’s heroes and villains are no walkovers. They are not mere mercenaries tussling in a Central American jungle. Instead, this group has repeatedly forced cosmic entities like Galactus to retreat. The Yautja understand this strength, which is why they have dispatched an army of their finest hunters rather than just one, to challenge the Marvel Universe. Given the scale of their force, it’s far from certain that the Marvel Universe will emerge unscathed.
The Yautja Are the Universe’s Game Hunting Superheroes
To fully grasp the capabilities of the Predator in a hunt, it’s crucial to familiarize yourself with their nature first. Luckily, comic books published by DC, Dark Horse, and Marvel offer abundant background details that can help you comprehend the species, their customs, and their past – shedding light on just how formidable they can be when they strike from unexpected angles.
A good point to begin could be exploring Dark Horse’s Predator series of comics rather than their Predator versus series. Through this, we come to understand that the Yautja are nurtured in a ruthlessly harsh environment – one that is not just physically demanding but also socially and culturally challenging. It resembles an alien Sparta, where the young confront fearsome creatures akin to Xenomorphs, merely to earn a place in their highly stratified society. Violence forms the bedrock of their tradition, and it only escalates from there. They don’t necessarily fear death or injury, but they dread the disrespect it would bring to their standing.
In comic crossovers featuring the DC universe, it’s clear that the Yautja, or Predators as they are commonly known, have a history of encountering superheroes. Over time, these encounters have led them to learn and adapt in response. For example, in the series “JLA versus Predator” written by John Ostrander and Graham Nolan, it is revealed that Predators can be genetically modified to mimic the abilities and powers of individual members of the Justice League of America (JLA).
In the Marvel Comics’ Predator series, it is revealed that the Yautja have a keen interest in Vibranium and appear to have obtained a supply for their warriors. The pursuit of Wolverine also indicates that these beings naturally possess superhuman abilities, possibly including regenerative powers. This implies they are well-equipped for hunting. Aside from a select few characters, the Marvel Universe is not well-versed in the ways of the Yautja.
The Predators Are Coming for the Marvel Universe and There Is Nothing They Can Do To Stop It
In simpler terms, it’s safe to say that most characters in the Marvel Universe might struggle against a Predator, even tough ones like Hawkeye, Punisher, and Captain America. However, what makes the Marvel Universe unique is its variety of characters with unusual abilities, which could potentially pose a challenge to the Predator’s powerful strengths.
Doctor Strange appears to be a hero that might give the Predators significant trouble. His extensive skillset makes him a formidable adversary, capable of causing major disruptions in any Yautja assault. For instance, his magic powers may bypass most Predator hunting devices. The Predators’ stealth techniques, presumably, would be rendered ineffective against Doctor Strange’s ability to perceive across dimensions. Most importantly, with the Time Stone at his disposal, Doctor Strange can undo fatal strikes, making him extremely hard to eliminate.
In the Marvel Universe, the age-old struggle between magic and technology is prevalent. However, in this situation, it seems that the Predators might have the upper hand. Given their potential knowledge of Doctor Strange prior to the chase, it’s plausible to speculate that over their countless hunts across time and dimensions, they may have discovered a magical artifact or spell that could counteract his powers, perhaps just enough to bypass his defenses.
In simpler terms, they may send an opponent skilled in the arcane lore of Earth or distant galaxies – someone who could give Doctor Strange a run for his money. The Yautja (Predators), knowing the exhausting nature of magic, would probably strike from various angles to overpower him. They might also employ strategies to disrupt his precise movements and gestures needed for casting spells. Essentially, while Doctor Strange is powerful, he might not be able to hold his own against a well-planned ambush by the Predators.
Not Even Marvel’s Most Hard to Kill Heroes Will Escape the Predator Hunt
From my perspective, at the opposite extreme lies Deadpool, the Predators’ absolute physical counterpart. The simple fact that he’s unstoppable adds an intricate layer of complexity to any effort aimed at tracking him down. Furthermore, his ability to break the fourth wall suggests that he’s likely watched, read, and is well-versed in every Predator movie, series, and comic book out there. Given his extensive alien combat experience, Deadpool presents a truly unique adversary for the hunters.
In contrast to Deadpool’s unique difficulty level, encountering the Yautja proves to be an even greater challenge. Although Deadpool might manage to defeat one or two of them, ultimately, defeating them altogether seems unlikely. This is because in Yautja culture, victory isn’t solely defined by killing the opponent. Instead, if the adversary is incapacitated, contained, or otherwise neutralized, it still counts as a valid win.
The Predators possess an array of tools that enable such outcomes. They can immobilize prey using energy nets, render them unconscious with toxins, and potentially devise a method to terminate Deadpool every time he regenerates. Given their extensive universal experience, they may have already dealt with opponents who can “break the Fourth Wall.”
Therefore, while Deadpool is seemingly indestructible, the Predators are more than capable of neutralizing him as a threat.
In the Marvel Universe, with its abundance of strong, intelligent, and exceptionally talented characters, one might expect them to be virtually unbeatable as a group. However, even they could not escape an invasion by Predators. The Predators’ mentality, technology, battle-hardened experience, and most importantly, their ability to adapt make it likely that despite potential losses, they will ultimately succeed in turning the Marvel Universe into their hunting ground.
