I’m Worried Marvel’s Biggest New Villain Is Being Rushed in the MCU

The Marvel Cinematic Universe gained immense popularity in the entertainment industry by skillfully constructing a long-term narrative spanning various films and series. This intricate plot development, orchestrated by Kevin Feige and team, was successful because it ultimately led to a grand finale and provided a worthy climax for fans’ years of devoted following. The grand conclusion was none other than Thanos (Josh Brolin), the Mad Titan who sought six Infinity Stones to wipe out half the universe. No villain has ever generated as much excitement and anticipation as Thanos, given the extensive prelude leading up to his character. However, since Thanos, the MCU has failed to reach such heights – and this is now a challenge they face.

Captain America: New World Order”, “Thunderbolts”*, and “Fantastic Four: Fresh Start”. The next standalone movie series is “Spider-Man: Fresh Beginning”, followed by “Avengers: Doomsday”, a title hinting at the primary antagonist who has yet to make an appearance.

*Note that I couldn’t paraphrase “Thunderbolts” as it doesn’t lend itself well to rephrasing without losing its original meaning.

Doom Doesn’t Even Go Here!

In the upcoming movie “Avengers: Doomsday“, Robert Downey Jr. is set to portray Doctor Victor Von Doom. This news may excite fans who have followed the Avengers, but it’s important to note that some viewers might not be familiar with this character. The previous live-action adaptations of “Fantastic Four” don’t provide a comprehensive background for Doom, and the brief cameo in “Fantastic Four: First Steps” didn’t offer much insight into the MCU version of the character.

Essentially, Doctor Doom won’t officially join the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) until he headlines its most significant film yet. However, given the franchise’s history of handling other characters in the Multiverse Saga, some feel it’s unfortunate to give a new villain such prominence. This sentiment is shared by dedicated fans of Marvel Comics who argue that Doctor Doom is too formidable a character to be introduced in this manner.

Will Avengers: Doomsday Be A Compelling Enough Introduction Film?

Despite being introduced late in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s grand narrative, there’s still a chance for Doctor Doom to make a lasting impact during the Multiverse Saga. While Thanos was hinted at and had smaller appearances before his main role in “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Endgame”, he became iconic with just a few films. So, similarly, it’s feasible that Doctor Doom can also become memorable given the right opportunities.

The question is if Marvel Studios has a plan to effectively integrate Doomsday into both the character of Doctor Doom and the extensive cast of established Marvel Cinatic Universe (MCU) characters, given that the film already includes multiple confirmed characters. However, it’s not out of the realm of possibility. By focusing on Doctor Doom and his mission to save his universe from incursion as the multiverse begins to disintegrate, the movie can delve into various aspects of his character at each stop, providing depth while simultaneously showcasing his determination and power through his encounters with different versions of MCU heroes (and villains).

If the movie concludes with Doom being the last one holding the threads of existence, it’s somewhat fitting that he was the first in the franchise to mark the end of the current Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Given his name, “Doom.” However, this move carries significant risk. With numerous MCU characters and actors known for their egoistic nature, the film titled Doomsday could potentially overlook many of them if Doom and a select few, such as The Fantastic Four and the X-Men from Fox, take up most of the screen time. Even though Doom might gain an impressive start, it could come at a substantial cost to these other characters.

Could Avengers: Doomsday Launch One of the Best Villain Arcs Ever?

Many fans, including myself, find the sudden introduction of Doom concerning, but it might not be as ominous as it seems. It’s plausible that Doom could deviate from Thanos in a significant aspect: he may not be a short-lived main antagonist who meets his end after the films “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Secret Wars.” Instead, we anticipate that following the Multiverse Saga, if the Marvel Cinematic Universe undergoes a major reset, Doom could play a pivotal role in the new primary timeline. This could potentially unite various realities and Marvel franchises for the first time.

It’s widely believed that Doom should have a more expansive storyline in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). If films like “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Secret Wars” are indeed just preludes to his main role in Phase 7, then what may seem like a hurried introduction now could turn out to be one of the most impressive character debuts in hindsight.

Meeting those stakes is quite a challenge – after all, the entire vibe of “Avengers: Doomsday” seems to be filled with high-pressure situations. The movie is set to hit theatres on December 18, 2026.

The stakes are incredibly high for that film – much like the whole feel of “Avengers: Doomsday”. This epic adventure will be premiering in cinemas on December 18, 2026.
