In the world of Resident Evil, no monster is as chilling as the fearsome Nemesis. Although characters like Albert Wesker may have their loyal followers, Nemesis stands out as one of the most indelible figures in video game lore. From his initial shocking appearance on the streets of Raccoon City yelling “STARS,” Nemesis has left an indelible impression on the Resident Evil series that very few genetically engineered creatures have been able to match. Even though he continues to resonate with fans, there are still many intriguing facts about the Nemesis from Resident Evil 3 that most players may not be aware of.
Here are the ten factoids about Nemesis that even most Resident Evil fans won’t know.
1) The Nemesis’s Real Name
It’s understandable for fans of the initial Resident Evil 3 to assume that Nemesis is his actual name, given that he carries a virus of the same name and the game title is Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. However, in reality, The Pursuer was his original moniker, as there are multiple Nemesis Tyrants produced. Fans eventually embraced the term Nemesis so strongly that Capcom acknowledged they had lost that particular naming battle.
2) Lisa Trevor Was the First Nemesis
The Nemesis parasite virtually wiped out everything that Umbrella contaminated with it, halting the development of an intelligent Bio-Organic Weapon (B.O.W.). But when the Tyrant Project was successful, Umbrella began conducting experiments at the Arklay Labs under Spencer Mansion.
(In this rephrased version, I tried to simplify the language and make it more natural and easy to read.)
Additionally, they chose to contaminate Lisa Trevor with the parasite due to her unique mutation which made her indestructible. Rather than dominating, Trevor’s immune system eliminated and rejected the virus. This finding prompted further research, eventually leading to the G-Virus Project. However, in terms of survivability against the Nemesis parasite, Trevor was the initial test subject.
3) Two Other Nemesis T-Types Proved Too Smart for Umbrella
During the project, multiple versions of the nemesis character, specifically the Nemesis T-Type, showed signs of independent thinking and attempted to leave the laboratory, as detailed in the Japanese edition guidebook for Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. However, it appears that they were eventually dealt with by Umbrella Corporation.
4) When Nemesis Mutates, He Loses Intelligence
As a fervent admirer, let me share that one objective of the Nemesis Project was designing a Biological Weapons Organism (B.O.W.) capable of obeying commands. Umbrella Corporation largely achieved this feat, but during the events of Resident Evil 3, Nemesis gradually lost his cognitive abilities as he underwent mutations. This is one reason why Nemesis wears such limited attire – by confining him in that manner, Umbrella aimed to prevent further mutation and preserve Nemesis’ intelligence.
5) Nemesis’ Resident Evil 2 Remake Cameo
Many players might have overlooked this fact as it wasn’t until a few years post-launch that the Resident Evil 2 Remake received this particular detail. In 2019, Capcom marked the announcement of the Resident Evil 3 Remake by releasing an R.P.D. demo for RE2 Remake. If you venture outside the police station in the demo and position yourself in a certain spot, you’ll hear Nemesis shout “STARS!
6) Nemesis Was Created in Umbrella’s European Labs
In the storyline, Nemesis’ sole mission transpired within America, being a spin-off from Umbrella USA’s original Tyrant series. However, it was actually conceived and developed at Umbrella Europe’s Lab No. 6. Although Nemesis may not make another appearance, Dr. Herman Frankl – the mastermind behind Lab 6 – seems to be alive still, hinting that he could potentially reappear in future Resident Evil games.
7) Resident Evil 4’s Luis Serra’s Nemesis Connection
Fans of Resident Evil 4 may recognize that Luis Serra had a background as a researcher and biologist before turning informant for The Organization. Much of his work was done with Los Iluminados, but a picture from Resident Evil 4 suggests that Serra was also involved in Laboratory Six of Umbrella Europe. This implies that he played a role in the creation of Nemesis, which could be one reason driving him to take down Los Illuminados.
8) Nemesis’ Original Voice Actor Was on Saturday Night Live
Generally recognized, Nemesis was the first monster within the series to vocalize. Although it was merely one word, this necessitated the hiring of a voice actor by Capcom. They opted for Tony Rosato, who had previously lent his voice to Mario’s brother Luigi in ‘Super Mario World’ and ‘The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3’ television shows. Furthermore, he was a well-known figure in live-action comedy, even joining the cast of ‘Saturday Night Live’ during the early 1980s.
9) Jill’s Hidden Chapel Death
In the original version of “Resident Evil 3”, Carlos is tasked with delivering a vaccine to Jill in the Chapel. Given that many players tend to rush through buildings as quickly as possible, they might overlook a significant event. Upon entering the Chapel, Nemesis unexpectedly bursts in and ceases his attack on Carlos. Instead, he shifts his focus towards Jill, attempting to break down the door to her safe haven. If you don’t promptly enter or eliminate Nemesis beforehand, he will demolish the door in a cutscene that most players have likely never witnessed, resulting in Jill’s demise.
10) The Original Nemesis Was Left-Handed
In the thrilling world of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, I discovered an intriguing detail – our colossal foe is left-handed! This quirk turns out to be a gameplay advantage if you play your cards right. Approaching him from his less dominant side (the right) allows you to dodges those powerful blows, significantly increasing your chances of defeating him.
