As a gaming enthusiast diving back into the gritty world of Gears of War: Reloaded, I can’t help but feel a tad disheartened by the alterations made to the iconic original game. The revamp for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X has left me and many other players scratching our heads over an unwarranted change that seems to have dampened the nostalgic experience we cherished from yesteryear’s first-person shooter. Despite this modification being minor, it doesn’t seem to add any significant value to the gameplay, making us wonder why Xbox deemed it necessary in the first place.
In our formal assessment of the game, we pointed out that Gears of War: Reloaded appears superfluous, especially for players on Xbox and PC platforms, given they’ve previously received an updated version of the original Gears of War in 2016 – the Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. The modifications between these two remastered editions are negligible as both are extremely loyal to the original. However, while Ultimate Edition maintained absolute fidelity, Reloaded introduces a few unanticipated alterations such as adjusting some user interface aspects. For instance, it modifies certain UI features in an unusual manner.
Why?
One notable UI modification in Gears of War that has garnered attention from fans, including ours, is the revamped killfeed interface. Unlike the original and Ultimate Edition versions, each kill now appears within a black border, a detail that stands out immediately. While this small alteration may seem insignificant at first glance, it undeniably detracts from the nostalgic feel of the classic Gears of War killfeed design. Furthermore, the new layout appears more cluttered and cumbersome, potentially reducing its overall efficiency.
As a dedicated Gears of War fan, I’ve been keeping an eye on the community discussions lately, and one post that’s been making waves is about the recent changes. It seems some players are expressing their frustration over these modifications, specifically questioning why Xbox decided to implement changes that no one seemed to ask for in the first place. The post also touches upon the new UI design that now sits smack dab in the middle of our screens, causing a bit of a stir among the community.
Reloaded UI – Why?

Indeed, the post’s widespread appeal and many of the associated comments seem to reflect a shared feeling. On the other hand, some users have mentioned that the modifications have significantly improved the text’s legibility, particularly for individuals with visual impairments. It is likely this accessibility upgrade was the primary reason behind the recent changes.
1) “I don’t agree, but since it’s readable and easy on the eyes, I appreciate it,” is one negative comment.
2) “Another user thinks it looks much clearer due to the black background and nothing seems blocked,” comments another user.
Towards the close of the day, this problem can be considered minor in comparison to the significant networking and compatibility concerns that the game has faced since its launch. Nonetheless, it’s been a point of irritation for some fans who value the traditional and sentimental interface, effectively confirming that the forthcoming “Gears of War: E-Day” will not restore the vintage killfeed from the first edition. It’s worth noting though, this isn’t the only alteration that “Reloaded” brings to the original game.
After considering all points, and as usual, we’re open to hearing your thoughts. Do you believe Microsoft made the correct decision with ‘Gears of War’? Or are the fans being overly critical, suggesting that this change should be reverted?
