The thrilling movie titled “Weapons” remains unchallenged atop the box office chart for a second consecutive week, as reported by Deadline. Over the past seven days, it added another $12.4 million to its domestic earnings. This impressive figure has once again claimed the number one position at the box office. Released this year, “Weapons” has already surpassed its production budget within just two weeks. Currently, it boasts a 94% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an audience Popcornmeter score of 85%. Notably, “Weapons” has outperformed new entrants such as “Caught Stealing”, “The Roses”, and “The Toxic Avenger” at the box office. Additionally, it has overshadowed the re-release of the classic “Jaws”, which is currently commemorating its 50th anniversary.
At present, the film “Weapons” is doing exceptionally well, earning $124.8 million domestically and $94.2 million internationally, totaling approximately $219 million globally. This impressive revenue was achieved with a production budget of only $38 million. To date, this movie marks director Zach Cregger’s highest-grossing release, surpassing the earnings of “Barbarian” ($45.3 million worldwide). After working on the “Resident Evil” reboot for Sony, which is reportedly in pre-production abroad, Cregger plans to produce a prequel for “Weapons,” focusing on the popular character Aunt Gladys. Additionally, he has written a screenplay titled “Henchman,” set within the DC Universe, but it has yet to receive official orders from DC Studios or Warner Bros.
At the Labor Day weekend box office, it’s the classic shark thriller, Jaws, that comes in second with an estimated earning of $9.8 million over four days. This re-release has made quite a splash, potentially reaching over $10 million by the end of the weekend. In third place is Sony’s latest offering, Caught Stealing, with an estimated revenue of $9.5 million. Directed by Darren Aronofsky, this film boasts a 84% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and stars Austin Butler, Matt Smith, and Zoë Kravitz. In fourth place is the new movie The Roses, estimated to earn $8 million. Rounding out the top five is the Cineverse film, The Toxic Avenger, anticipating a take of around $2.2 million.
In the coming weeks with minimal competing films, it’s predicted that “Weapons” will achieve a third consecutive success. The film’s strong word of mouth, coupled with its critical acclaim as an “expertly woven tale of chilling mystery and heart-pounding suspense,” is undoubtedly working in its favor. Similar to “Barbarian,” director Cregger has once again crafted a genuinely terrifying movie that keeps viewers at the edge of their seats. Initially, there was a plan for a chapter exploring Aunt Gladys’ origin, but it seems the writer-director might instead use this cut material as a foundation for a potential prequel film about Aunt Gladys instead.
The film, titled “Weapons,” boasts a stellar ensemble from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, featuring Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Benedict Wong, and Alden Ehrenreich. In addition to this star-studded lineup, Cary Christopher, Amy Madigan, June Diane Raphael, Austin Abrams, and Jason Turner are also part of the cast in the highly praised horror movie. As of now, “Weapons” is only playing in cinemas across the nation. For fans who wish to own it, pre-orders for the DVD and Blu-Ray are currently available, although the official home release date has yet to be announced.
