However, Saints Row 4 went too far and fans yearned for a return to a more realistic narrative.
In the end, Volition decided to restart the series with the straightforwardly named “Saints Row”. Unfortunately, the reboot didn’t succeed and Volition closed down operations, but Saints Row is predicted to continue under new management.
Saints Row 5 Could’ve Been Much Better Than the Reboot We Got
During his visit in 2019, popular Saints Row YouTuber mrsaintsgodzilla21 had an early glimpse into the development of the reboot at Volition. Recently, he shared his experiences in a new video, disclosing that he was privy to a demonstration of the game and an investment pitch to persuade backers. Although many broad concepts eventually made it to the final product, such as the setting in a desert city and introducing fresh characters, the initial plan was for it to be titled Saints Row Cinco and seemed more expansive than what was ultimately released.
It appears that initially, the game wasn’t planned as a complete overhaul or full reboot, as evidenced by the involvement of original actor Arif S. Kinchen who recorded most of his lines for the game. Originally, the game was intended to feature returning characters like Pierce from earlier versions of Saints Row. However, Volition later opted to eliminate all previous characters from the game entirely. Initially, the game was designed to mimic the tone of Saints Row 2, but with elements reminiscent of Saints Row The Third for more extravagant action sequences. Ultimately, they decided to restart the entire series instead.
Beyond that, the game Saints Row intended to expand its open-world and gaming experience significantly. The use of human shields was supposedly included, only to be removed later as Deep Silver deemed them excessively violent, despite the game being M-rated and centered around crime and violence. It aimed for a more sophisticated perk system and focused on exerting control over the city.
In the ultimate gaming experience, as a player, you’d find yourself not just controlling characters, but also running businesses within the game world! To ramp up the excitement and challenge, these business-related missions could have been given more depth – think complex strategies, unexpected events, and high stakes.
For instance, owning the toxic waste company wouldn’t just mean managing profits; it would come with some bizarre side effects for NPCs! They might start growing extra limbs or displaying other peculiar mutations. Owning a district would grant you the power to legislate, even legalizing wild things like streaking for NPCs and regulating prostitution.
There was also an intriguing feature that let you record your own voice overs for civilians, making your mark on friends’ games. However, due to potential issues with freedom of expression, this might have been scrapped from the final version.
In simpler terms, during discussions about the development of Saints Row, it was revealed that the creators had some outrageous ideas for gameplay features. One such idea was similar to Doom, where enemy stun mechanics allowed players to approach and perform a takedown for health rewards. However, due to technical constraints like memory limitations and engine difficulties, many grand concepts were either scaled back or removed entirely from the final version of Saints Row. While watching the full video provides more insight, it seems that an earlier version of Saints Row might have featured more intricate details in its world design.
