LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight Developers Want to Draw on All Batman Fiction

The forthcoming “LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight” is set to bring tales from across the “Batman” universe onto your screens, including comic books, films, and video games. In a recent chat with GamesRadar, TT Games’ lead strategist, Johnathan Smith, shared their rationale for adapting these stories into the upcoming game.

In the interview, Smith explained that TT Games aimed to pay tribute to memorable moments across different Batman narratives, while maintaining their signature humor. This resulted in a creative process that drew upon decades of Batman references from films, television shows, comics, and games, culminating in a unified, indispensable, and epic tale about the Dark Knight.

Smith explained that the game combines iconic moments from various sources, intertwined with subtle nods and our own witty humor, to recreate the feeling of becoming Batman for players. Essentially, we gather elements from everywhere, connect them, and craft a single story that encapsulates and is crucial to the experience.

Besides discussing it, Smith highlighted the extensive selection of Batman-inspired content that TT Games can delve into, ranging from Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham series to elements derived from Batman: The Animated Series critically praised soundtrack. Even the LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight demo showcased at Gamescom 2025 drew inspiration from classic comic book stories, teasing aspects of Joker’s origin story based on the 1989 Batman film. In summary, Smith pointed out that the studio aims to provide a unique Batman experience yet unexplored.

Smith stated, “We consider it an immense honor because we believe we have an abundance of resources to work with. What’s more, no one has ever assembled all these elements in a single video game experience. We have the opportunity to present this in a way that hasn’t been done before, utilizing cutting-edge technology and creating a deeply immersive Gotham City. The mechanics will also evolve alongside the player’s journey, mirroring the character’s emotional development.

At Gamescom, it was announced that a new game titled LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is under development for platforms such as PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. The game will feature seven playable characters, including renowned figures like Jim Gordon, Robin, Batgirl, Catwoman, Talia al Ghul, Nightwing, and of course, Batman himself, who will embark on different missions together.

The studio has additionally verified that players will have the opportunity to traverse Gotham City as a vast open-world setting, thereby enabling them to pay a visit to renowned sites from Batman’s mythos, such as the Gotham Botanical Gardens, Arkham Asylum, Wayne Tower, and Ace Chemicals.

In line with its LEGO game heritage, TT Games has affirmed that the new release, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, includes a cooperative mode. However, in a Q&A about the upcoming game, it’s been clarified that this cooperative feature is restricted to local multiplayer, meaning there won’t be any opportunities for online co-op play.
