In the Arrowverse, they aren’t shy about bending rules for creative purposes. For instance, Oliver Queen, the original character, bears little resemblance to his comic book version. He patrols Star City at night, emulating more of Batman than Green Arrow. These deviations don’t stop within Team Arrow’s territory either; characters in Central City, like the Flash, have their own distinct approaches. For example, the Reverse-Flash, beyond murdering Barry Allen’s mom, impersonates Harrison Wells, his mentor, to extract what he desires. Additionally, Eddie Thawne, a relative of the villain with no comic book background, significantly contributes to the storyline in The Flash.
In my perspective as a movie reviewer, the Arrowverse is always eager to carve its unique path, but occasionally, it seems to draw inspiration from its origin stories. A prime instance of this is when Barry Allen, in Season 2, ventures back in time to save his mother – an element that echoes the timeless “Flashpoint” narrative. Regrettably, I believe The CW missed a golden opportunity by not deviating from this arc, as it ultimately mismanaged the storyline.
“Flashpoint” Is a Shell of Itself in the Arrowverse
In Season 2 of “The Flash”, Barry experiences very little joy due to the betrayal of his mentor, Jay Garrick, who is revealed as the villain, Zoom. This speedster antagonist aims to take Barry’s speed to heal his illness and threatens Earth-1. When Team Flash refuses to cooperate with his plans, he intensifies his actions, causing harm such as the death of Henry Allen, Barry’s father. This tragic event is meant to drive home the severity of the situation for Barry. However, Zoom is eventually defeated and transforms into The Black Flash. Yet, this victory means little to Barry because his father isn’t there to share it with him. The only solution Barry can envision is traveling back in time to alter things by saving his mother.
The third season starts with Barry living happily in a new reality where he has both parents. However, he’s lost touch with Team Flash and they seem to be doing well too. But trouble brews as a new speedster called Rival emerges, putting everything Barry has at risk. Initially, it appears this conflict will span several episodes, but the show unexpectedly undoes the changes made by “Flashpoint” almost immediately. Instead of facing consequences, Barry returns to his original timeline with only minor alterations after some emotional conversations. This isn’t how things unfold in the comics, but at least the Arrowverse can take solace in knowing they aren’t alone in mishandling the “Flashpoint” storyline.
The Flash Movie Does an Even Worse “Flashpoint” Impression
In simpler terms, the DC Extended Universe often bends or ignores established rules, with Superman and Batman appearing more self-serving than heroic, necessitating other acts of altruism. Initially, The Flash seems like a beacon of hope amidst the rest of the Justice League, but his decision to alter time in “The Flash” movie dims that light. Consequently, the film becomes filled with brief appearances of various characters, turning it into more of a star-studded event. Midway through, Michael Keaton’s Batman joins The Flash on his mission, while the expected villain, Reverse-Flash, takes a backseat to Michael Shannon’s General Zod.
The Arrowverse stays true to its storyline, focusing on Barry Allen’s self-centered decision in “Flashpoint”. Conversely, the DCEU chooses to sideline Flash and let a clueless Batman battle an overpowering Kryptonian army – a poor choice for a Flash narrative. Given the two failed attempts at portraying “Flashpoint” in live-action DC properties, it appears unlikely that another chance will be given. However, with numerous other exciting adventures starring The Flash on the table, perhaps this could work out for the best as it leaves room for less mishaps.
The Flash is streaming on Netflix.
