During no specific time of the year is it inadvisable to enjoy horror movies, but the months of September and October are undeniably the finest for this genre, as they’re known as the ‘Spooky Season’. Horror enthusiasts usually seize this opportunity to explore fresh frightening sensations, revisit classic legends from yesteryears, or immerse themselves in various horror series that span decades. One of the most anticipated annual events during this season is none other than the Halloween franchise, focusing on the chilling tale of Michael Myers. Notably, two remarkable sequels from this series have recently reappeared on streaming platforms.
Starting from September 1st, Peacock has stockpiled a horde of “Halloween” movies, including the first two sequels in the franchise. Specifically, they added the 1981 classic “Halloween II” and the 1982 movie “Halloween III: Season of the Witch.” So, if you’re aiming to marathon all the “Halloween” films before Halloween arrives on October 31st, your task has just become a lot more manageable!
The Best Halloween Sequels
The iconic horror filmmaker John Carpenter’s original “Halloween” stands alone as a benchmark within the series, as none of the subsequent films over the past five decades have managed to approach its level of excellence. Generally speaking, the “Halloween” franchise is often associated with producing subpar movies after the 1980s. Nevertheless, the first two sequels continue to be highly regarded by many fans, with “Halloween III: Season of the Witch” even gaining more appreciation from viewers over time.
Halloween II follows directly from the original Halloween, with Michael Myers resuming his pursuit of Laurie Strode, played by Jamie Lee Curtis, after the events of the first film. While it may not be as frightening or skillfully crafted as Carpenter’s movie, Halloween II delivers an enjoyable sequel that many fans enjoy for its continuity.
Instead, “Halloween III: Season of the Witch,” released in 1982, is now cherished for a reason opposite to its initial reception. Many fans disliked this film at first because unlike its title suggested, it didn’t feature Michael Myers or Laurie Strode – the main characters from the original “Halloween” films. Instead, it attempted to transform “Halloween” into an anthology series with each sequel presenting chilling new tales related to Halloween. However, this approach failed to resonate, especially following the first two “Halloween” movies which told a single continuous story.
As a dedicated horror aficionado, I must admit that the absence of Michael Myers in Halloween III left many of us initially disheartened. However, over the last four decades, the film has grown on us, becoming a cherished classic among horror enthusiasts like myself. It’s a rollercoaster ride filled with unexpected twists, chilling imagery, and top-notch special effects that will leave you breathless. If you ask any Halloween fan today about their favorite sequel, they’re likely to argue convincingly that Halloween III is the undisputed champion of the series.
