While the numbering of the “Final Fantasy” games may seem to suggest they should be played sequentially, these mainline games are essentially standalone stories. Players have the freedom to play them in any order they prefer and can even choose to skip certain games if desired. Titles often hint at connections between games, such as “Final Fantasy 10-2” being a direct sequel to “Final Fantasy 10.” For many years, there’s been a theory that “FF7” shares a universe with another mainline game. This theory appears to have some validation now.
In simpler terms, “Final Fantasy 7” and “Final Fantasy 10” are two distinct video games, each set in different worlds. The former takes place on Gaia, where you join Cloud’s group in Midgar, aiming to stop Sephiroth who poses a threat to the planet, whereas the latter is set in Spira, following Yuna’s journey to defeat Sin and bring peace to her world. Interestingly, some fans speculate that these seemingly unrelated games could actually be part of the same universe.
FF7 Could Show the Distant Future of FF10

As a diehard Final Fantasy enthusiast, I’ve pondered over the idea that the worlds of Final Fantasy VII and X could share a common universe. If this theory holds true, it implies that the storyline of Final Fantasy VII unfolds far into the future. In this future timeline, the people we know as the Cetra are said to be the descendants of Spira’s inhabitants, with Aerith being one of their distant ancestors. This captivating theory was born from subtle details, much like many fan theories often originate.
In the video game series Final Fantasy, we find a character named Shinra in Final Fantasy X-2. It’s speculated that he later establishes the company you encounter in Final Fantasy VII. The remake of Final Fantasy VII introduces an intriguing detail by displaying a photograph in Shinra’s headquarters, which features a man wearing a mask resembling Shinra’s from Final Fantasy X-2. This could simply be an Easter Egg, hinting at a connection, but not necessarily confirming it.
In simpler terms, the strong resemblance between the two game worlds, Farplane and Lifestream, strongly suggests a connection. While the Farplane is often perceived as a sacred or religious realm due to the cultures found there, the Lifestream is typically viewed as an energy source, particularly by Shinra, since it’s the origin of the Mako they extract.
The strong link between the people of Spira and the eventual recognition as the Cetra is evident in their reverence for the Farplane, which they consider sacred, and their unique capacity to interact with it. It’s also plausible that the manner in which the Farplane appears could be the sought-after Promised Land that Shinra desires the Cetra to lead them to, given its potential richness in Mako if identical to the Lifestream. Yuna might serve as the most compelling proof of potentially being a descendant of what would later be known as the Cetra, not only due to her ability to cast spells and summon entities, but also because of her power to guide departed spirits to the Farplane for peace.
This Theory Is a Confirmed Interpretation
Although Yoshinori Kitase hasn’t explicitly confirmed this theory linking the games as fact, it appears to be a plausible and deliberate interpretation of their interconnected worlds given his involvement. As the director of Final Fantasy VI, VII, VIII, and X, and a co-writer for these games, Kitase has often been asked about various theories that have emerged in the fan community over time.
In the interview conducted by Edamame Arcade Channel (which you can find on YouTube), Kitase, who’s producing the remake of Final Fantasy 7, was asked a series of rapid-fire questions. One of these questions inquired if Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 10 occur in the same universe. In response, Kitase showed a circle, indicating that his answer was indeed affirmative.
In simpler terms, a recent interview seems to confirm a popular theory about Final Fantasy 8, but it’s worth revisiting an older interview where Kitase, one of the writers, walks back his denial, suggesting that one of his colleagues may have intended this theory as a potential interpretation of the story. This perspective opens up the possibility that Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 10 could share the same universe as an interesting interpretation, rather than an absolute fact. This approach allows for flexibility in enjoying these games individually or together, while also encouraging exploration to verify the theories yourself.
