These days, Sony’s PlayStation and Microsoft’s Xbox seem closer than ever before, and their recent sales achievement indicates that their friendship might grow even stronger.
Over the last couple of years, it appears Microsoft has been creating quite a stir by releasing its major titles on PlayStation consoles. Many, including myself, wondered whether this could be a harbinger of the end for the Xbox hardware platform – if there are no exclusive games, what’s the point in buying an Xbox? Is Microsoft perhaps gradually phasing out the Xbox hardware ecosystem?
Looking back two years, it appears that many initial concerns were largely unwarranted (at least thus far). As an analyst, I’m delighted to report to our shareholders that Xbox has never had more console players. Although hardware sales have experienced a decline from their launch year peak, the introduction of Xbox Cloud Gaming has significantly boosted Microsoft’s console-based game development ecosystem.
Microsoft is actively growing its gaming operation in multiple directions. The company has ventured horizontally into mobile territory through acquisitions and is putting considerable effort into enhancing the Xbox PC experience on Windows as well.
It appears that Sony, the main competitor of PlayStation, is also taking notice. More and more, it seems gamers prefer to remain with their current platform and show a growing affinity for service-based games. This shift seems to be due to the maturity and stable size of the audience for cinematic single-player titles. In response, Sony, like Xbox, is making its games available on Steam, and surprisingly, it’s also starting to offer its games directly on Xbox.
In simpler terms, Helldivers 2 was the initial game published by PlayStation Publishing LLC that launched on Xbox, and its success could guide Sony’s future strategies. Preliminary indications for Helldivers 2 on Xbox suggest an extremely positive outcome.
Helldivers 2 hits the #1 spot on Xbox’s sales charts
In simpler terms, Helldivers 2 is a cooperative shooter game that has a similar feel to Starship Troopers. Players join forces in squads of four, entering turbulent battlefields across the universe to complete different objectives against numerous alien threats. The game’s narrative, delivered creatively within its universe, resembles an extensive online role-playing adventure. Moreover, the events within the game change and develop over time on a dynamic map of a galactic war, creating a unique experience for players.
In simpler terms, Helldivers 2 has similar characteristics to Halo, specifically ODST, as both games involve hunting aliens in a science fiction setting. Microsoft and PlayStation released a DLC pack inspired by Halo for Helldivers to celebrate their partnership. However, whether Xbox fans can expect more games like this is currently uncertain.
As an observer, I must admit that the success of Helldivers 2 on Xbox was unexpected. Initially, one might have assumed that its performance would deter PlayStation from proceeding with further publishing ventures. However, given the promising start it’s had on this platform, it appears that Helldivers 2 is proving to be a profitable move for them so far.
On the Xbox console platform, the dashboard and website feature lists of the most popular free and paid games, and today, as tweeted by Klobrille, Helldivers 2 clinched the number one spot in the U.S., surpassing heavy hitters like NBA 2K26, Madden, Black Myth Wukong, and Minecraft. Interestingly, Helldivers 2 and its Super Citizen Edition can also be found high up on the charts in other Xbox regions, such as the United Kingdom.
It’s quite possible that Helldivers 2 could outperform expectations on Xbox, surpassing the typical sales rate for games. With its rich history of shooting games like Halo and Gears of War, Xbox has a strong reputation. Given the similarity with Halo, it’s difficult to ignore.
There’s a good chance that Helldivers 2 could exceed expectations on Xbox, surpassing average sales rates. Known for its long-standing lineup of shooter games such as Halo and Gears of War, Xbox has built a strong reputation. Given the game’s connection to Halo, it’s hard not to notice.
This summer, Microsoft made the move to bring Gears of War, along with other popular titles like Indiana Jones and Forza Horizon, to the PlayStation platform as well. This decision boosted Xbox game sales significantly during the last quarter, and now, it’s likely that Sony is brainstorming strategies to replicate similar success.
Sony would make $$$$$$ porting older games to Xbox, without harming PlayStation

Essentially, many of PlayStation’s best games from the last two generations have already been sold across platforms such as PC and PlayStation. Since gamers today tend to prefer sticking with what they have, Sony might be considering methods to capitalize on Xbox console users who are deeply invested (and sometimes quite resistant to change). Despite having a smaller user base compared to Nintendo, Steam, and PlayStation, the Xbox community is highly active and shows strong interest in purchasing new top-tier games.
It’s likely that action-packed games such as Days Gone, Returnal, or The Last Of Us could prove highly popular if they were released on Xbox, judging by the success of Helldivers 2. In fact, The Last Of Us has recently become a successful TV show, which might further boost its sales potential on Xbox. While Spider-Man and God of War would likely perform exceptionally well there too, it’s possible that Sony may choose to keep some of their most prominent franchises exclusive to their platform as a way to stand out.
Isn’t it safe to say that introducing new games like Spider-Man or God of War might not significantly impact PlayStation now, given how much time is spent on games like Fortnite and Roblox? The market for these cinematic experiences seems to be shrinking due to intense competition for people’s leisure time. To stand out amidst the noise, it seems strategic to launch on multiple platforms to maximize chances of success.
For a while now, Sony has been indicating to its investors that it aims to shift focus beyond PlayStation’s hardware-centric approach. It’s clear that Microsoft is preparing to bring the popular Halo franchise to PlayStation in the not-so-distant future. One might wonder if PlayStation is unwittingly harming itself by persisting with this restriction.
It’s been speculated that the upcoming Xbox console might allow third-party services such as Steam. In this case, it may be advantageous for PlayStation to bypass intermediaries and negotiate more favorable terms directly with Xbox instead.
