In a short while, Borderlands 4 will be upon us, and we’re experiencing a flood of thrilling new developments. Today, I’d like to bring your attention to an intriguing facet: the incorporation of what Gearbox refers to as “Dynamic Events.” Recently, I had the opportunity to chat with Associate Creative Director Grant Kao, and in a mere thirty minutes, his fervor for this feature was contagious, further fueling my appreciation for the team.
Enhancing the already lively atmosphere, the freshly published version of Game Informer’s latest issue proudly displayed Borderlands 4 on its cover. I made a point of showing this to Grant, expressing my enthusiasm for the company he represents. Following some enthusiastic, non-topic questions from fans that I’ll discuss further, I inquired if there was any specific information he was excited to reveal about the new system.
I adore the dynamic events in Borderlands 4 as they enhance every aspect of the smooth game world we aspire for, contributing to immersive storytelling and interactive gameplay that responds to player actions. Moreover, these events spontaneously offer additional activities for players to engage with.
In Borderlands 4, variety will matter
The team at Gearbox is making an effort to ensure that the dynamic events in their game don’t replace beloved side quests or key story moments with insignificant content. Instead, they aim to offer additional optional content that is genuinely enjoyable and can be used for collecting weapons, gear, or just experiencing the journey itself.
Developing further, Borderlands 4 strives to ensure that there’s always a purposeful task at hand. Rather than repeatedly undertaking the same missions or combating the same enemies ad infinitum for that elusive reward, it offers engaging activities that maintain an exhilarating and ever-changing experience each time you play.
To make the gaming experience more engaging, they’re offering rewards for diverse character setups. Instead of just focusing on a single player eliminating a boss with an ideal overpowered class setup, players will have the opportunity to excel in various playstyles and strategies.
As an analyst, I’d rephrase that as: “I’ve noticed there are game builds optimized for boss kill speed. Now, we also have builds designed to maximize your speed in clearing large groups of enemies in encounters – essentially, how swiftly you can wipe out 10 or more enemies.

Grant, I really want to move at top speed! In video games, dynamic events are special because they rarely repeat during a single game session. They provide unique, fresh experiences for the player each time.
In simpler terms, I wondered if these changing occurrences are fixed in every location. If one frequently revisits a spot, will the same changing event happen there consistently, or do they vary randomly?
Grant explained, “While I wouldn’t call them completely random, achieving true randomness is quite complex. Instead, there are specific parameters and conditions that draw upon a player’s information in some manner.
In many cases, both opponents and conversations have numerous distinct forms or styles, demonstrating that variety plays a crucial role in each scenario.

There are certain circumstances that categorize various possible outcomes or events. Consequently, there are numerous possibilities. For instance, attacking an enemy can take six distinct forms (disregarding enemy types), while conversing with another character has several options. It seems that versatility plays a crucial role here.
He added, “Furthermore, if you’ve taken part in an event multiple times, we save that information as well. To offer a more engaging experience, we consider the frequency of your participation and the fact that some players might be part of a group. So, how can we tailor the gameplay to accommodate these repeat players and groups?

Engaging with friends will lead to an increased level of challenge in all aspects. This includes a higher number of opponents, larger health reserves for enemies, and an abundance of explosive situations. And of course, as you may expect, you’ll hear more agitated cries from Claptrap: “ ‘I wonder if there’s adjustment for the events based on the number of players?’
Without a doubt, absolutely. There’s been a significant rise, I apologize for interrupting (he was quite enthusiastic to address this question). The increase in density is notable, and there’s also a distinction in the type of mobs, sometimes presenting tougher or formidable opponents.
Enemies, as you can imagine, need more strategic planning and attention focused on them. Indeed, they become more challenging due to their increased numbers and the complexity of certain situations, possibly influenced by global events,” stated Grant, elaborating further.
What’s even more fantastic is that the game keeps track of who’s played which parts and where, logging achievements and current goals to personalize the gaming experience. Consequently, the game events will adapt to you and your friends, offering interactive and lively content that evolves based on what transpires within your game realms.
“So, we will vary things up heavily, based on different sets of parameters,” he said in short.

As a tech-loving gamer, I couldn’t help but inquire about the loot situation: Specifically, I wanted to know if the scale adjustments would lead to a more substantial treasure trove for us players to enjoy!
It seems I might need to gather a team of enthusiastic friends who are keen on hunting for legendary items, so we can increase our chances of obtaining that coveted high-level weapon that perfectly suits my gameplay style.

Regarding some legendary items, you’ll find a diverse selection of them obtainable via the fluctuating event rewards. Although obtaining a particular item may require solving intricate puzzles involving numerous levers and switches that might remain a mystery, the overall legendary collection is still up for grabs by players.
In a dynamic world, it’s challenging to focus on a single event and assign a particular loot pool to it, as events can change rapidly. Therefore, we chose not to limit ourselves in such a way, according to Grant.

I overheard Grant explaining, “Rather than leaving the content of loot chests from dynamic events random, we purposefully designed them to contain items from any desirable legendary tier. Essentially, there are three types of dynamic events in this Borderlands game: ambient events, activity-driven events, and world events. Each type provides distinctive experiences and prizes as you progress through the game.
As a spectator, I invite you to casually observe scenes that seem ordinary, not necessarily designated as events. Instead, consider these moments as natural elements of our world, blending seamlessly into the landscape. You might not actively participate in them, but if you attentively watch or keenly observe, you may find yourself rewarded for your vigilance.
From my perspective, that kind of dedication might elude some casual gamers. Yet, I’m eagerly embracing it. I see myself capitalizing on any edge I can get against those dedicated daily grinders who are committing full-time to this game.

Next comes the second level, where the tasks are more action-oriented, requiring the player to complete multiple steps such as searching for items or participating in events. This level often interacts with various legendary resources, primarily focusing on different biomes and world loot.
As a keen explorer, you’ll find yourself drawn to bustling hotspots where activities are abundant if you’re on a mission to find specific items within a particular pool. However, it’s essential to note that these discoveries aren’t always guaranteed. The most coveted finds usually originate from the elite dynamic events that tower above the rest in the game.
Finally, we have the global spectacle, a one-of-a-kind event filled with grand displays, unique to each region.

As a tech-savvy gamer, I can’t help but get excited about global happenings because they often present unique chances to snag some of the most elusive legendary items and stylish cosmetics in the game’s loot collection!
I’ve been eagerly anticipating the arrival of Dynamic Events in Borderlands 4. These events will make sure that the endgame stays exciting, each loot farm run offers a fresh experience, and they reward players who pay close attention and demonstrate skill. As someone who has followed this series for a long time, I can’t wait to jump back in and witness how much more immersive my beloved zones can get.
In just under two weeks, I join millions of fellow enthusiasts, brimming with anticipation as we eagerly look forward to diving back into the captivating universe of Borderlands.
