Among all The Elder Scrolls RPGs, it’s Skyrim where I’ve accumulated the most gameplay time, largely because of the countless hours dedicated to tweaking the game with custom mod setups or massive modpacks. Yet, Morrowind, Bethesda’s third installment in the series that launched in 2002 for both Xbox and Windows PC, is undeniably the one that holds a special place in my heart.
Morrowind, named after the peculiar, almost otherworldly region of Tamriel, is cherished by many for its alien-like ambiance, abundant lore, and gameplay mechanics that encourage a lot of buildcrafting exploration. In numerous aspects, I’d contend it’s a more intriguing, more daring kind of game compared to Oblivion and Skyrim, particularly due to its minimal guidance, which eventually makes mastering, interacting with, and progressing through the game incredibly satisfying.
Many people adore Morrowind due to its unique, otherworldly ambiance, abundant lore, and innovative gameplay – in my opinion, it offers a level of intrigue and courage that surpasses both Oblivion and Skyrim.
A significant issue with Morrowind is that it clearly exhibits signs of aging, not just in terms of its visuals but also in other aspects. The dated graphics from 2002, coupled with rigid and awkward character and enemy animations, are noticeable. However, what truly detracts from the gameplay experience is the real-time combat system that relies on dice rolls, which can feel frustrating. It’s infuriating because you may repeatedly miss your attacks and spells due to bad rolls, even when aiming directly at an opponent.
A notable mod in development aims to modernize The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind by transferring its entire gameplay into Elden Ring, a recently released action RPG. This fascinating project is the brainchild of InfernoPlus, who gained fame through his work on Cursed Halo mods.
In simpler terms, his latest video demonstrates an extensive project where he’s adapting the third installment of The Elder Scrolls series into a game resembling Soulslike, using the Elden Ring engine. This includes incorporating the original game’s landscapes, missions, and dialogue interchanges.
It’s quite astonishing to note that InfernoPlus claims nearly half of the project has been completed, with the entirety of Morrowind’s map and its associated interiors, lighting, weather, and atmosphere already in place. The majority of Non-Player Character (NPC) positions and dialogues are also set up. However, according to him, what remains is the actual gameplay, making the world seem fully realized yet bereft of interactive elements.
If there’s sufficient enthusiasm within the community for a conversion of Morrowind to Elden Ring, InfernoPlus intends to keep working on this mod. If you’d like to show your support, you can do so through his Patreon. However, he has mentioned that there are three crucial aspects where help is needed in order to successfully complete the project.
In my exploration, I’ve noticed a problem in Elden Ring, referred to as the “c0 limit.” This constraint puts a cap on the number of characters with a Tarnished-like appearance that can be present simultaneously in the game – this includes the player and NPCs. Due to the vastness of cities like Vivec City and Balmora in Morrowind, this restriction is often exceeded, resulting in improper spawning of numerous NPCs.
One notable issue with Morrowind, however, is that it clearly reflects its vintage status, not only in terms of visuals, but also in other aspects, such as gameplay mechanics and design.
Currently, there’s no way to create navigational meshes, which are hidden grids on the ground that AI characters use to decide their movement paths. It seems like resolving these issues will require a seasoned engineer with extensive experience tinkering in FromSoftware’s “Dantelion” game engine.
To conclude, InfernoPlus is seeking assistance from 3D artists to enhance the quality of Morrowind’s weapons and armor for the project. Furthermore, he aims to adapt Elden Ring’s enemies with redesigned appearances inspired by Morrowind, potentially transforming the endgame Hoarah Loux boss into Dagoth Ur. Given that Dagoth Ur is a deity, one might question if it’s possible to defeat a god-alas, poor Nerevar.

A Discord server for “Elden Scrolls” developers has been established, where you’re invited to participate if you believe you can contribute to this mod project; InfernoPlus feels assured that the mentioned issues can be resolved with some external help.
It’s comforting indeed, considering the strong affection numerous individuals hold for both Morrowind and Elden Ring. I am confident that those equipped with the necessary skills will eventually discover this project, one way or another.
Regarding its legality, InfernoPlus claims it doesn’t infringe on any copyrights because it needs users to own and install genuine copies of both Morrowind and Elden Ring for operation. This is similar to the condition that keeps Tale of Two Wastelands, a popular mod allowing Fallout 3 play within Fallout: New Vegas, legal.
I’m really excited to watch this mod evolve, and as soon as it (hopefully) becomes available, I’ll make sure to install it right away.
Just as I mentioned earlier, I am an avid fan of Morrowind and Elden Ring happens to be one of my all-time favorite games. Given this, I am eagerly looking forward to seeing how this mod evolves, and as soon as it (hopefully) becomes available, I’ll be installing it right away. The wait for The Elder Scrolls 6 is indeed long, but having a well-crafted Soulsy remake of Morrowind to play in the meantime would certainly be fantastic.
Currently, you can purchase Elden Ring for PC at Loaded (previously known as CDKeys) for only $35.09 instead of the original price of $59.99. On the other hand, Morrowind is usually priced at $14.99 but is available for only $7.49 on GOG. However, it’s uncertain if you can own these games across various platforms and run the mod smoothly when it launches, so you might want to hold off buying Morrowind until it goes on sale on Steam or Loaded, in case a better deal arises on a more compatible platform.
