IO Interactive emphasizes that the upcoming game 007 First Light will deviate significantly from their previous work on Hitman, and they’ve recently shared that this James Bond title will include some of the largest missions the studio has ever created. In a conversation with GamesRadar, art director Rasmus Poulsen discussed the expansive regions players will traverse during their missions in 007 First Light.
In discussing the concept of engaging players as James Bond, Poulsen explained that the expansive environment invites players to immerse themselves within it, allowing them to absorb the atmosphere before deciding on their approach to completing tasks or missions.
During this journey, you’ll be immersed in a tranquil, narratively rich environment that allows you to embody James Bond. You can explore, appreciate the surroundings, and develop your own assumptions about the upcoming task,” he explained.
During Gamescom, Poulsen emphasized that the mission highlighted would encourage players to devise their own solutions for problems, mainly because the map will be expansive enough for exploration and making the most of all the gameplay systems available within the game ‘007 First Light’.
Upon your arrival, Paulsen explained that we transition into a realm that’s both familiar from an Input/Output (IO) standpoint and appealing to the audience. He likened it to a grand chateau, with various aspects within it catering to social gameplay and ample space for exploring the broader dimensions of our gameplay offerings.
Regarding the size of certain missions in the game, Paulsen commented, “Some of these missions could be among the biggest we’ve ever tackled historically when considering their dimensions.
It’s important to highlight that IO Interactive often creates extensive levels filled with interconnected moving parts, as demonstrated in the last three _Hitman_ games. However, they are generally recognized for the complexity and depth of their levels. The forthcoming game, _007 First Light_, aims to merge this intricacy with a larger scale, suggesting that the studio is aiming high with its new title.
Previously, Director Jonathan Lacaille discussed IO Interactive’s methodology in level design for the game ‘007 First Light’. Specifically, he talked about how they balanced the free-roaming elements from the ‘Hitman’ games with the structured sequences typical of more traditional, linear games.
Lacaille mentioned that it’s a choice between intense gameplay reminiscent of action-packed games and the intricate systemic gameplay like in Hitman. IOI’s background aligns perfectly with the IP, which is why they are emphasizing this aspect. However, this alone doesn’t encompass who Bond truly is.
