The fashion world has lost one of its most influential eyes.
Giorgio Armani, the man behind the Armani brand that was first introduced in 1975, passed away as confirmed by the company on September 4th. He was 91 years old.
With profound sadness, the Armani Group regrets to inform that its visionary founder, Giorgio Armani, has passed away. Known as a respected and beloved figure among employees and collaborators, he died peacefully, with his family by his side.
The company, known for pioneering ready-to-wear couture, expressed that there’s a “gaping absence” or “vacancy” left by the person who built and fostered this enterprise with vision, fervor, and commitment.
Absolutely, Armani was remarkably dedicated to his profession, and he was highly respected within the wealthy sector of the LGBTQ+ community, boasting a net worth exceeding $12 billion.
Relentless till the very end, Mr. Armani continued to work tirelessly until his last days, pouring his heart into the company, its collections, and numerous ongoing and upcoming projects. Reflecting his steadfast spirit, we, the employees and his family who have been his constant companions, pledge to safeguard his legacy and advance his company with honor, duty, and affection.
Despite stepping away from public life in recent months because of deteriorating health, as evident by his absence at Milan’s Fashion Week in June – a first for him in his professional career to miss one of his brand’s fashion shows – his dedication remained steadfastly towards his work.
Armani’s vision played a significant role in creating some of the most striking red carpet outfits, such as Julia Roberts’ oversized suit at the 1990 Golden Globes, which she purchased off-the-rack showcasing Armani’s expertise in ready-to-wear designs. Additionally, many iconic moments for Jodie Foster and Cate Blanchett were made possible by his designs, as well as costumes for Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball and Born This Way tours.
Beyond showcasing his designs on some of the most memorable occasions in their careers, celebrities have commended the designer for his humble demeanor and exceptional work ethic.
Back in 2013, Foster shared with Harper’s Bazaar that Mr. Armani has a knack for making a dramatic entrance, turning any tranquil scene on its head with his assertive presence. One instance was during the selection of an Oscars dress for him – it had been perfectly tailored and prepared. But when he arrived, disapproved, and requested new materials and designs, it became a whirlwind of activity reminiscent of an I Love Lucy episode.
Over time, Armani solidified his position as a leading figure in the field, and he persisted in refining his artistry well into his nineties.
Last year, when speaking with Esquire, I expressed that my perspective on clothing has shifted over time, always adhering to the principle that garments should accentuate the individual rather than overshadow them. My fondness for delicate tailoring, thoughtful embellishments, and flowing lines remains unchanged from the beginning, but the balance of these elements is consistently refreshed. Often referred to as a master of timeless style, upon closer examination of my work, you’ll find that things are never static. Instead, they are in a constant state of evolution.
