On Sunday, August 31st, viewers encountered an unexpected issue while streaming episode 21 of the anime series “Sword of the Demon Hunter: Kijin Gentōshō” on HIDIVE. Instead of the full episode, a truncated version was streamed, featuring gaps in the content, filters, and visual effects that were not present in the final product. It seems this incomplete version originated from an earlier stage of production, prior to additional enhancements. In response to the mishap, HIDIVE acknowledged the error via Anime News Network, pledging to rectify the issue promptly.
Sword of the Demon Hunter is among HIDIVE’s most prominent summer offerings, offering episodes that are simulcast directly from Japan. The streaming service has also unveiled an English dubbed version, boasting a distinguished ensemble cast including Aaron Campbell, Juliet Simmons, and Donna Bella Litton. In this series titled Sword of the Demon Hunter: Kijin Gentōshō, we follow Jinta, a swordsman from the Edo era, who is fated to battle a demon for more than 170 years across different eras. The story originated as an online webnovel and was later published in Japan by Futabasha and North America by Seven Seas Entertainment in book form.
HIDIVE’s Official Statement on Incomplete Sword of the Demon Hunter Episode

HIDIVE shared the following statement regarding Sword of the Demon Hunter’s latest episode:
On September 1st, HIDIVE aired Episode 21 of the highly acclaimed supernatural historical fantasy series Sword of the Demon Hunter Kijin Gentosho (Season 1, Part 2). In order to maintain our commitment to our subscribers and keep pace with the show’s broadcast schedule, we received an early version of the episode from the Licensor for immediate release. HIDIVE aims to consistently provide top-notch content that fans have grown accustomed to and is working diligently to distribute the final version to our subscribers as soon as possible.
It’s important to consider the intricate circumstances surrounding HIDIVE’s release of anime episodes concurrently with their Japanese airdate, which some might perceive as unconventional. Releasing an anime on time involves cooperation from numerous parties, and in the case of HIDIVE, they rely on the studio responsible for “Sword of the Demon Hunter,” Yokohama Animation Laboratory, to deliver the necessary assets before the official airdate. This enables HIDIVE to schedule episodes accurately, adjust subtitles appropriately, and avoid delays. If the animation studio encounters delays, so does HIDIVE. To prevent such delays, the licensors for “Sword of the Demon Hunter” opted to release an incomplete version of the episode to meet its streaming date.
On HIDIVE, there’s no word yet about when fans can look forward to watching the completed episode 21 of Sword of the Demon Hunter, titled “The Wish Part 2.” This episode has already been aired in Japan. The anime has experienced several production delays, pushing its initial June 27, 2024, release date back to March 31, 2025. As for the schedule of episode 22 on HIDIVE, it remains unclear how these delays may impact it.
What are your sentiments towards this predicament? Do you think HIDIVE should’ve aired the episode prematurely with missing parts, or was it more appropriate for them to delay its release instead? Please share your opinions and insights here!
