A truly enjoyable science fiction series is hard to beat, especially one that delves deeply into the intriguing idea of time travel. Science fiction enthusiasts know well that not all stories about time travel are equally engaging, as there have been more than a few disappointments in this genre. The most successful time travel shows masterfully blend the central theme with captivating narratives and memorable characters, building up layer upon layer until they produce a show worth revisiting countless times. These are the series that science fiction lovers keep coming back to during their marathon viewing sessions.
Time travel manifests in various ways: time loops, portals, wormholes, cryogenics, intriguing tattoos with secret codes, and the classic concept of a time machine. No matter what initiates the journey, there’s likely a time travel tale tailored for everyone, enabling stories to either delve deeply into science fiction or blend elements of the fantastical. In reality, there are numerous captivating series centered around time travel. Unfortunately, it would be impractical to enumerate them all at once, even though that might seem ironic.
3) Futurama
Back in December 1999, I became an instant fan of this extraordinary show called Futurama. It quickly gained a legendary status for its unstoppable spirit. Initially airing on Fox Network, it was unfortunately taken off the air, only to be brought back as a series of four movies. Then, Comedy Central decided to give it another chance. Now, in 2022, Hulu has joined the revival party, and I couldn’t be more thrilled that Futurama is still going strong!
In this futuristic series, we follow Philip J. Fry, a man who was frozen in time only to wake up in the year 3000. The show offers a mix of chaos and amusement as Fry, now out of his original era, navigates through a world that’s both strange and offers opportunities for him. With an odd job, a robot friend by his side, and many more unusual encounters, Fry’s first steps into the future mark only the beginning of time-travel adventures, as viewers are already familiar with.
Considering all the challenges Futurama has faced to remain relevant, it’s safe to assume that its followers are incredibly devoted. It has indelibly impacted the realm of science fiction, particularly in animation, elevating anticipations everywhere.

2) Loki
To be clear, “Loki” is the most recent addition on this list, but that shouldn’t deter you! “Loki” belongs to Marvel’s Phase Four, taking place post-Avengers: Endgame. The story unfolds as the Avengers meddle with time (for the sake of universe preservation) and inadvertently free a Loki Variant into the multiverse. This sets the stage for the Time Variance Authority (TVA), an organization dedicated to safeguarding the Sacred Timeline.
In a typical Loki fashion, he instantly resists the notion that he isn’t the universe’s focal point, which sets off a series of events. The narrative of Loki delves deep into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and it doesn’t shy away from incorporating time travel as well. It’s rich, captivating, and laden with Easter Eggs that will delight Marvel enthusiasts.
Loki is undeniably among the most acclaimed Marvel series on Disney+ and ran for two seasons before concluding as planned. The illustrious ensemble cast featuring actors like Tom Hiddleston, Tara Strong, Owen Wilson, Sophia Di Martino, among others, certainly played a significant role in its success. It’s clear that the happenings within Loki will have far-reaching consequences across multiple universes.

1) Doctor Who
The long-running and iconic series “Doctor Who” is famed for its time-traveling adventures. The central figure, a Time Lord, possesses the power to traverse both time and space by means of the TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimensions In Space). Spanning over several decades, this show’s longevity seems almost supernatural, much like the Time Lords themselves. The original series began in 1963 and propelled the character into popularity. “Doctor Who” innovatively managed to maintain its run even with changing lead actors through the implementation of the Time Lord regeneration process.
The Doctor is renowned for journeys that traverse both time and space, often dropping by for thrilling escapades in various locations. Given the added excitement of such experiences with companions, it’s no surprise that The Doctor typically brings along humans to share these adventures.
It’s fair to acknowledge that the popular series, Doctor Who, has made a significant impact not only on time-travel narratives but on science fiction genre as a whole. By presenting intricate subjects, themes, and historical events through an imaginative perspective, it offers viewers the chance to directly engage with these moments, often resulting in memorable experiences.
