MachineGames studio head discusses hopes for Wolfenstein 3: ‘We have a story to tell’

MachineGames, the developers behind both Xbox and Bethesda Softworks, have expressed their desire to return to the violent alternate-history world of Wolfenstein with a third game. According to studio head Jerk Gustafsson, who spoke about this during a Noclip documentary discussing the team’s work on the rebooted series, they originally envisioned the Wolfenstein series as a trilogy for protagonist BJ’s journey. Gustafsson stated, “We have always seen this as a trilogy… I hope we’re not done with Wolfenstein yet. We have a story to tell.

1. The second installment of a three-part series, this documentary delves into the topic that was initially explored in the first segment regarding the studio’s beginnings, and hints at the third installment focusing on Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.

2. In 2014, MachineGames brought Wolfenstein: The New Order to life, offering a fresh take on the Wolfenstein series complete with a captivating narrative and a thoughtful protagonist BJ Blazkowicz. The tale unfolded further in 2017’s Wolfenstein: The New Colossus.

3. In 2019, Wolfenstein: Youngblood emerged as a spinoff, jointly developed with Arkane Lyon. Since then, the franchise has been on hiatus, but if Gustafsson’s remarks are any clue, fans can keep their fingers crossed for more excitement in the future.

We have always seen this as a trilogy … I hope we’re not done with Wolfenstein yet.

In 2024, the game development studio, MachineGames, unveiled Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Todd Howard from Bethesda Game Studios, a sister team, served as the executive producer for this project.

MachineGames often works alongside id Software, exchanging ideas and technical know-how based on id’s in-house engine, id Tech. For Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, they chose to create a modified version of Id Tech 7, named Motor, which included advanced features such as ray-traced lighting.

More Wolfenstein please, in games and TV

Indeed, this news sounds marvelous to me. I’m a big fan of the Wolfenstein reboots, and their writing is exceptional, leaving indelible impressions long after I’ve played them. The reinvention of BJ’s character as a Jewish resistance fighter battling a Nazi regime was profoundly impactful.

Without giving away any spoilers (though really, you should play it), Wolfenstein 2 stands out for its intense and moving emotional scenes.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle was exceptional – it even won Game of the Year in 2024 and received a glowing review from me. I’m currently enjoying the recently-launched DLC expansion, The Order of Giants. While I’m somewhat apprehensive about MachineGames consistently working on licensed properties, I wouldn’t mind seeing a sequel for Indiana Jones.

For BJ’s trip, as we outlined the plot for New Order, we had a strategy for developing this particular character further, detailing what could transpire in the sequel and the third part of the storyline.

I’ve shared my excitement about the prospect of Quake making a comeback with a new game. Perhaps it could be a joint project between MachineGames and id Software.

At the same time, the potential for Wolfenstein 3 is particularly exciting. I truly hope we get a trilogy out of it, and one final adventure featuring BJ battling Nazis.

This would also align well with rumors that a Wolfenstein TV series is in development. Although not yet officially confirmed, the series is said to be underway at Amazon MGM Studios, with Jonah Nolan and Lisa Joy from Kilter Films set to produce it.

The same team behind this project has been responsible for the highly successful Fallout TV series. As of last October, the show had attracted over 100 million viewers, and a second season is slated to debut on December 17.
