Death Note: Will The Live Action Netflix Series Still Happen?

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but feel that the tale of Light Yagami in Death Note may have reached its end, but it seems that even an otherworldly Shinigami can find ways to keep on ticking. In the past, we’ve seen both Japan and North America breathe life into the story of Light and Ryuk through movies, stage plays, and even live-action musicals. However, there’s a strong possibility that one of the most anticipated future adaptations might never see the light of day for a very particular reason. Given the history of Death Note’s live-action productions, this news might be music to the ears of many anime enthusiasts.

In 2022, the makers of the popular series Stranger Things, known as the Duffer Brothers, announced they were partnering with Netflix to develop a new live-action television show based on Death Note once more. The project even secured screenwriter Halia Abdel-Megui, best recognized for her work on Miss Annity. However, in April 2026, the Duffer Brothers signed a four-year deal with Paramount, indicating their departure from Netflix around that time. In a recent interview with Variety, the Duffer Brothers revealed their significant shift from Netflix to Paramount.

Joining a studio with such a rich Hollywood history feels like a great honor, not a responsibility we take lightly. We’re also eager to reconnect with our dear friends Cindy [Holland] and Matt [Thunell], who were among the earliest to support us and an unconventional script that evolved into ‘Stranger Things.’ They took a leap of faith in us back in 2015, and they’re taking another one now – we can hardly wait to collaborate on new tales with them.

The upcoming television series isn’t a new venture for Netflix in exploring the realm of Shinigami. Back in 2017, Netflix attempted to produce a live-action Death Note film, but its release sparked a lot of debate. Despite boasting high-profile actors like Nat Wolff, LaKeith Stanfield, and Willem Dafoe, and being helmed by MonsterVerse director Adam Wingard, the movie fell short of meeting expectations based on its source material. A sequel to this film was initially announced by Netflix, but it appears that the second installment is now highly unlikely.
