Lady Gaga & Netflix Just Outdid One of Disney’s Biggest 2025 Movies

Hollywood’s body-swap comedies have long been a proven way to elicit laughter and emotional moments by placing two dramatically contrasting individuals in each other’s shoes. For many years, Disney has held the top spot in this subgenre, with “Freaky Friday” standing as its flagship production, receiving a sequel titled “Freakier Friday” earlier this year. In this follow-up, Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan reprised their roles, finding themselves entangled in a multi-generational body swap. Released in August 2025, the film was a significant success, grossing over $135 million worldwide by early September. With an affordable production budget of $42 million, the movie more than tripled its investment, marking a rare commercial victory for Disney amid a challenging year.

Unexpectedly, a contender emerged from the dark, mysterious corridors of Nevermore Academy – a twist nobody anticipated in the second season of Netflix’s hugely popular show Wednesday. The series, during an entire episode, explored the familiar concept, but with a supernatural twist courtesy of a fresh character portrayed by Lady Gaga. However, the show’s take on body-swapping didn’t surpass its cinematic counterparts in terms of humor.

A Freaky Wednesday at Nevermore

In the sixth episode of “Wednesday” Season 2, the source of mayhem unfolds, and our protagonist, Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega), embarks on a quest to regain her psychic abilities. Guided by her grandmother’s counsel, she sets out to find the grave of Rosaline Rotwood, a renowned deceased medium and former teacher at Nevermore, in search of a supernatural tune-up. It is here that Lady Gaga enters as a transient yet critical character, embodying the ghostly, entirely white-garbed spirit of Rosaline. Rotwood consents to assist but issues a warning to Wednesday: if the ritual is disrupted, it will result in a “dangerous ploy.

Unfortunately, on Wednesday, Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers), their lively and incessantly active roommate, barges in at a crucial moment, halting the ritual. Consequently, both roommates find themselves waking up the next day having exchanged bodies. Now, Wednesday, known for their gloomy monochrome demeanor, finds themselves trapped in Enid’s vivacious, effervescent, and socially adept werewolf lifestyle. Simultaneously, Enid must navigate life through Wednesday’s well-known, unflinching, dead-eyed gaze.

The body-swap episode stands out primarily because of its two leading actors. For nearly two seasons, Ortega delivered an outstanding performance characterized by deep restraint and calmness. However, this episode breaks away from that entirely. In the role of Enid in Wednesday’s body, Ortega brings a infectious energy, moving her limbs exuberantly and flashing bright smiles with her teeth showing. A notable scene where she compels Wednesday’s body to dance energetically to BLACKPINK in the school quad is one of the series’ best moments, embodying pure, unfiltered joy and showcasing Ortega’s remarkable comedic talent.

Even more noteworthy is the accomplishment by Myers, who took on what might be considered a more challenging role – accurately replicating the distinctive minimalist quirks her co-star had made famous. Myers truly shines in this portrayal. She adopts Wednesday’s rigid stance, masterfully executes the subtle head tilt, and delivers lines with a deadpan delivery that’s spot on, making her performance both eerily accurate and hilarious. Furthermore, due to the contrasting nature of their characters, the swap puts these friends in unfamiliar territory, leading to a greater appreciation of each other’s qualities and fostering genuine emotional development.
