The year 2025 was a significant milestone for DC, and things appear to be getting even more exciting for their franchise ahead. The release of James Gunn’s Superman set off the DC Universe with a bang, while Peacemaker Season 2 is further expanding its universe. This interconnected new world mirrors the now-defunct DC Extended Universe that struggled with inconsistent quality over a decade.
Moving forward, both the DC Universe and separate DC worlds are preparing to unveil numerous movies and TV shows featuring iconic superheroes. DC fans can look forward to an array of entertainment offerings on both the big screen and streaming platforms in the coming years.
Washington D.C.’s exciting lineup of upcoming releases features both films and series that are part of the DC Universe continuity, as well as those that originate from different universes altogether.
1) Lanterns – Canon
After wrapping up Season 2 of Peacemaker, DCU’s next venture is a new TV series set to debut on HBO Max, titled Lanterns. This series focuses on veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and rookie John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), who team up to solve a murder on Earth. Characters like Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), previously introduced in Superman, will also be part of the show. The initial season of Lanterns comprises eight episodes, offering a detective-style story that only loosely connects to the wider DCU narrative. Chris Mundy, former executive producer of True Detective and Ozark, will oversee the series as its showrunner.
Lanterns will stream on HBO Max in early 2026.
2) Supergirl – Canon
The upcoming movie from DCU features Milly Alcock portraying Kara Zor-El, who first appeared as Supergirl in the film “Superman.” Directed by Craig Gillespie and penned by Ana Nogueira, “Supergirl” is based on the comic “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.” The story revolves around Kara, a Kryptonian and cousin of Clark Kent/Superman (David Corenswet), as she embarks on a quest for revenge across the galaxy with her pet dog Krypto. Filming has already wrapped up, and the movie is now in post-production before its release in 2026. The cast also includes Jason Momoa as Lobo, Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll, and Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills. As a continuation from Kara’s brief introduction in “Superman,” “Supergirl” will explore her past and potentially establish her as one of the main characters in DCU moving forward.
Supergirl will open in theaters on June 26, 2026.
3) Clayface – Canon
In simpler terms, “Clayface” is set to be the third movie in the DC Universe, following “Supergirl.” Directed by James Watkins, this film stars Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen/Clayface, a character who can change shape and is made of clay, living in Gotham City. With a focus on horror elements, “Clayface” will explore the backstory of Hagen, an aspiring actor whose face gets disfigured, eventually transforming him into a metahuman. Filming began in August 2025, and horror specialist Mike Flanagan, along with Hossein Amini, are involved as writers. The cast also includes Naomie Ackie and Max Minghella.
Clayface hits theaters on September 11, 2026.
4) Man of Tomorrow – Canon
In an unexpectedly swift turn of events, the upcoming film titled “Man of Tomorrow” marks a new journey for Superman. James Gunn is set to resume his role as writer and director, although specifics about the plot remain confidential at this time. Superman will indeed be a central figure in “Man of Tomorrow”, though it’s important to note that this movie won’t be a direct continuation of the original “Superman” film. Characters like Lex Luthor (portrayed by Nicholas Hoult), Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), and likely other Superman-related characters, are anticipated to make an appearance in “Man of Tomorrow”. Scheduled to release just two years following the DCU’s debut film, this exciting new venture is expected to stir up just as much enthusiasm among fans as the original “Superman” did.
Man of Tomorrow is scheduled to open in theaters on July 9, 2027.
5) The Batman: Part II – Not Canon
The anticipated continuation of “The Batman”, originally titled “The Batman: Part II”, is causing excitement among fans despite its numerous delays. Slated for release in 2022, the film will once more feature Matt Reeves as director and Robert Pattinson reprising his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman. After introducing a separate Gotham City in the first movie, the sequel aims to further explore its dark, gritty environment that exists independently from the DCU. Although some fans have suggested merging Pattinson’s Batman with the DCU, it currently seems unlikely. Key characters like Oz Cobblepot/Penguin (Colin Farrell), Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), and Jim Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) are expected to return in the sequel, although its main villain remains unannounced as of now.
The Batman: Part II will hit theaters on October 1, 2027.
6) Dynamic Duo – Canon (Assumed)
For the very first time, DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures Animation join forces to bring us “Dynamic Duo,” an upcoming movie that delves into the origin stories of two iconic characters – Dick Grayson/Nightwing and Jason Todd/Red Hood, also known as the Robins. This film promises to showcase their unique friendship as they navigate through multiple trials during their early days. Debuting as a director in this feature film is Arthur Mintz, who will employ the use of puppetry animation for the creation of “Dynamic Duo.
The “Dynamic Duo” isn’t currently established as belonging to the “The Batman” universe, but their ties to the DC Universe are still somewhat unclear. At present, the only known indication is a post on the DC website that highlights all forthcoming DC projects set within the DCU continuity.
Dynamic Duo will release in theaters on June 30, 2028.
Other DC Projects in Development
The District of Columbia has numerous projects in the pipeline, but they don’t have specific release dates yet. Some of these projects could shape the future significantly for the studio. In an upcoming series titled The Brave and the Bold, a new Batman character will be the main focus, while a fresh Diana Prince will debut in an upcoming Wonder Woman film. Other DC projects, like Teen Titans, The Authority, and Swamp Thing, are being developed as future installments in the franchise. Additionally, movies featuring Bane and Deathstroke, along with an animated feature starring Mister Miracle, are also under development. Lastly, a sequel to Constantine, titled Constantine 2, will bring Keanu Reeves back to his role from the 2005 movie, though it should be noted that this project exists outside of the DC universe.
In the world of television broadcasting, DC is planning to launch Season 2 of “Creature Commandos” as part of their DC Universe (DCU). Additionally, Viola Davis’ character Amanda Waller will star in her own series, while “Paradise Lost,” “Booster Gold,” and a show featuring “Blue Beetle” are expected to join the DCU’s television lineup at some point down the road.
Because all the mentioned projects are still in early development stages, it’s important to note that DC’s plans may change at any time. If these projects come to fruition, viewers can expect an exciting journey that could solidify DC’s position in the world of superheroes.
